Yay Pesto!

Ok. This might not be exactly earth-shattering news for anyone, but I was delighted to see Sacla have included the words ‘Suitable for Vegans’ on the new packaging of one of their products. Sacla are a household name in the UK and are the go-to people for decent, reasonably-priced pesto. Last year they launched dairy-free versions of their popular basil and tomato pesto jars, using tofu and cashew nuts to compliment the taste and add a cheesey element to the sauces. Regrettably they didn’t mention the word vegan on the jar, although a quick read of the ingredients list confirmed that the products were indeed free from all animal products. So I was pleased to pick up the new-design jar in Sainsbury’s today and see those magic words ‘Suitable for Vegans’ on the back of the jar. I wish more food manufacturers would follow suit!

Smoked houmous

Yes, seriously.

I am writing a blog post about houmous. After all the jokes, all the stereotyping and all the times I’ve been left with nothing to eat but houmous, I am dedicating an entire blog post to the creamy stuff.

Why? Because the smoked organic houmous by Natural Vitality is fabulous.

Check it out.

Vegan palm oil

Palm oil continues to be one of the fiercest hot topics for vegans and people concerned with environmental protection.

It is thought of as one of the most destructive crops on the planet and many vegans staunchly refuse to purchase products containing the oil crop.

Most of this talk focusses on palm oil production in southeast Asia due to extensive deforestation associated with the industry. Opponents cite loss of habitat and death to primates on a large scale as main reasons to campaign against the crop.

During my time at the Just V Show in London this weekend, I purchased the following jar of palm oil that just happened to be labelled with The Vegan Society trademark.

Blanck Mass

Benjamin John Power is a leading force in the field of electronic music. He enjoys a celebrated partnership with Andrew Hung under the band name Fuck Buttons and has recently released a solo project album.

Power on his own goes by the name Blanck Mass and his latest collection of tracks, Dumb Flesh, was unleashed upon the world last month. Since the release, Power has been frantically working to keep up with the demands of promotion and touring so I was thrilled when he agreed to answer a few questions for little ol’ me.

But why would FGV wanna talk to a electronic music champion? It just so happens that Benjamin John Power is a dedicated vegan.

Check out what he had to say.

Omega 3 for vegans

I don’t know much about nutrition. I know why I’m fat, but that’s about it.

There are vegans who will tell you about food combining, daily intake requirements and even how many bananas to eat per day. I give you beer and fried things and expect you will look after the essential nutrients part yourself.

I’m breaking with this tradition to let you know that Sainsbury’s have started selling omega 3 tablets that are suitable for vegans. Hopefully somebody more in-the-know than I will jump into the comments to explain what benefits vegans can obtain from consuming these tablets containing linseed oil. I have a flimsy understanding that the essential fatty acid contained within the oil can help protect your heart and lower cholesterol levels.

The above statement is in no way based on scientific knowledge or understanding.
