Eating vegan in Hammersmith

Vegan food is everywhere in London.

I don’t simply mean there is a lot more than there used to be. I mean there is vegan food ALL OVER THE PLACE.

Take my recent walk through of the Hammersmith Broadway centre. The shopping plaza is overflowing with vegan food options.

Your plant-based cuisine options inside the centre include:

  • Coco di Mama is a London-based chain featuring Italian food and coffee. You can grab delicious comfort food including lasagne
  • Leon is showing us just how spectacular a non-vegan chain can cater for vegans and their new burger is sensational
  • Pret is still making vegan options a priority
  • Wasabi has some stunning vegan sushi, salad and soup options
  • Pulse Juice Bar is a kiosk overflowing with vegan toasted sandwich options, as well as salad and soup to go
  • Crosstown have a kiosk near the front entrance of the centre and always have about five vegan donut flavours

This list isn’t even close to everything vegan in the centre, which also houses a Tesco that has a huge selection of the Wicked Kitchen range of ready meals and sandwiches.

A vegan food revolution inside the Hammersmith Broadway centre is underway and is indicative of what’s happening all over London and the UK.

How are the vegan options in your local shopping centre?

New vegan pub food

As I was taking a leisurely stroll along the banks of the Thames earlier today, my chubby eyes spotted this enticing chalkboard:

Oh yes. ‘More vegan friendly options’ chalked across the bottom of the a-frame!

This sign was perched outside The Old Ship W6 in Hammersmith. I’ve written of the pub’s vegan-friendly nature in the past (here and here) and they have tweeted me on several occasions to highlight their vegan beer selection.

Get along over the next few weeks to try the new Autumn menu items that include this gorgeous apple crumble with almond milk custard. How good does that look?!

Burger with a view

I’m about to break the vegan Internet.

London. Rejoice.

You can buy one of the nicest vegan burgers in the UK and consume it in one of the most glorious settings in London. This is happening right now in the capital and it is fabulous.

What the heck am I babbling on about? Check out this vegan burger.

20150406_180034Yep. That is a handmade burger patty in bread with cashew cheese and beetroot slices, served next to a bundle of crunchy fries. I can’t even.

This burger was one of the best meals I’ve enjoyed in London. I bet you wanna know where I got it, right?

Hammersmith Thursdays

Poor old West London gets a bit neglected as all the cool vegan stuff tends to happen Central, South, North and East. Well get ready, ’cause Hammersmith is getting its vegan on.

I stumbled upon an outdoor food market set up in Lyric Square today and got a very pleasant surprise. There was vegan food available!

Western Ghats what I’m talking about

Sagar vegetarian Indian restaurant

Something has been troubling me and I had no other choice than to bring in a guest. Many months ago Josh and I dined in a West London vegetarian restaurant. I was underwhelmed by the Indian food and have not been inspired to write a review about our experience.

Although much time has passed, Josh kindly agreed to write his first ever blog entry and has recounted our night at Sagar in Hammersmith as a FGV guest contributor. Take it away, Josh.

An expensive lesson

The Gate Restaurant of Hammersmith

How much would you pay for a meal? When dining out in a fancy restaurant, do you set yourself a budget or do you sometimes allow yourself to splurge on fine food?

If you don’t mind distributing your wealth now and again, I have some advice for you. Think twice before distributing it to The Gate Restaurant, a vegetarian eatery located in Hammersmith, London. I am going to be blunt and brief. I found it to be over-priced, over-dependent on dairy and severely lacking in vegan options.

The restaurant itself is rather pleasant, if a bit grubby. My seat afforded me a lovely view across the restaurant to the massive feature window. Unfortunately I was also next to a wall that was riddled with bizarre scuff marks and scratches. I’m not above eating in a venue with a bad paint job, but after viewing the prices on the menu I would expect The Gate Restaurant to splash out on a lick of paint now and again.

Speaking of prices, I have never paid so much money for such unexciting, unadventurous and downright dull food.
