Christmas snacks

One of my favourite things to do in a supermarket is to trot down the seasonal aisle. You know the one. The aisle rammed with novelty gifts and food products related to whatever time of year it is.

It’s where the shops cram the latest gimmicky toys at Christmas time or the One Direction mugs with chocolate eggs in them leading up to Easter.

This aisle is often the site of vegan junk food finds, especially if you are cruising the seasonal aisle at your local Sainsbury’s. Remember when I snapped up these vegan sweets at Halloween time? They were in the seasonal aisle.

The lucky dip that is the seasonal aisle of my nearest Sainsbury’s coughed up some new, never-before-seen vegan snacks for me yesterday and I only bought them in order to share with you all. Of course.

How many snacks?

I have been busy catching you up on the amazing meals I enjoyed during my recent Southern Californian vacation, but a lot of what I consumed wasn’t from any restaurant.

Coconut everywhere

Coconut-based foods are taking over the world. I literally can’t get my head around how many new coconut products are popping up each week.

One of the leaders of this surge is Bessant & Drury. Th company has been producing one of the best vegan ice creams in the UK for a few years and are now branching into the yoghurt field with their Coconut Co-operative brand.

The owner and founder Steve Bessant generously supplied March London Vegan Potluck attendees with a special tasting of their mango and passionfruit variety of yoghurt. 350 tubs of the stuff were hand delivered to the event by Steve himself!

Other coconut favourites of mine recently have been the milk products from Rebel Kitchen. Not only are these drinks delicious but they have the cutest packaging and graphics I have seen in a long time. Check out their website.

To wrap up coconut appreciation post, I wanted to make a quick mention of the Trek cocoa coconut flapjack bar. It is chewy and chocolatey and perfect for a snack on the go. It is shown below with both the Rebel Kitchen and Coconut Co-operative products.

Eating en DF

I have just woken up from an afternoon nap in my rented vacation apartment in Mexico City. In a short while I will be getting dressed and having a few sips of mezcal before heading out for some early evening drinks in the nearby gay cantinas.

But you didn’t come here to hear about my leisurely holiday. You want to see gorgeous photos of enticing vegan food, right?

When have I ever let you down? Keep scrolling to see a fraction of the food I have been busying myself with here in Mexico. This city does have vegan dining-out options but what follows is a small selection of my self-catering creations with a few store bought snacks thrown in for good measure.

Seasonal madness

This post is one of the shortest in the history of my blog.

I simply wanted you to know about this Christmas-themed product at Tesco. I was too scared to try them, so I am hoping someone can post a review below. They honestly look vile.

Never enough: the final chapter

Like all good love affairs, my recent dalliance with vegan snack across the USA had to end.

I’m sure it wasn’t the reality, but my memory leads me to believe I ate from the time I set foot on San Franciscan soil to the moment they rolled me onto a London-bound plane departing Philadelphia. Readers based in the US know how readily-available vegan junk food is and my chubby hands were rarely empty.

Following are a collection of photos documenting my final days of vegan vacation snacking. These pictures, together with the previous posts, detail the food adventures Josh and I experienced throughout San Francisco, Oakland, Mendocino, Bend, Portland, New York City and Philadelphia.

Never enough again

My consumption of vegan snacks during this trip through northern California and Oregon is nothing short of staggering.

All of the brands and products MUST be consumed as and when they catch my eye, otherwise I will return to the UK full of remorse and thoughts of ‘if only’. This over eating marathon is not simply a product of my greedy temperament, it is also a necessary process to ensure I don’t feel too depressed back in London.

Don’t laugh. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it.

I think I love you

I didn’t get to be the FGV by eating a well-balanced diet and attending pilates everyday. My kitchen has often witnessed crimes against food decency while oil, sugar and too much of too much are usually my staples.

However, I am trying to improve my outlook and intake when it comes to my health. For the past month I have been enjoying a breakfast of raw oats, fresh or dried fruits, seeds and almond milk. I have been devouring record amounts of fresh fruit and have managed to cut out most processed sugar.

Don’t fear, though. My run as the loveable gay carrying too much weight is not coming to an end anytime soon. I love cider and beer too much for that to happen. But I am searching out ways to eat more food that is less bad for me without giving up the sweet thrill I am addicted to… and today I hit the jackpot.

That’s your bloomin’ lot

There used to be a store I frequented as a younger person called Popcorn Palace. This maize emporium was located in a shopping mall on Australia’s Gold Coast and with my hometown just an hour or so away by car, my friends and I would often find ourselves buying bags of the good stuff.

Popcorn Palace was one of those places that believed in the mantra ‘more is more’. I used to marvel at the vast array of flavoured popcorn lining the shelves and always ended up buying more jumbo tubs than I could handle of the irresistible snacks. I remember the watermelon variety extremely fondly.

Thus commenced my lifelong love affair with popped corn.

Flash forward to a few years (decades?) later and popcorn still rules my roost. Popcorn is probably second only to potato in my most-loved category. I might not have Popcorn Palace in my life these days, but the good people of Bloom’s are working hard to keep my maize malaise at bay.
