Most popular of 2016

I need to apologise for my lateness.

Last year I shared the most-viewed/liked photos from my Instagram account for 2015 sometime in January 2016.

Here we are in February and I’m only just now highlighting the most popular Fat Gay Vegan Instagram posts from 2016. So slack.

Last year, I gave a rundown of the most popular photos but I thought it might be more fun for you all to try and guess where they are from.

There are 16 photos on my most-viewed/liked list.

How many can you work out? Put your answers below!

Vegan pulled chicken

After infuriating vegans with almost-vegan products, Linda McCartney Foods has now added a few completely plant-based items to its range.

One of these to hit UK supermarket shelves over the past month or so is the Vegetarian Pulled Chicken.

I thought I would post briefly so you can see what the packet looks like and also the simple meal idea we threw together last night.

Anyone feeling this new #vegan product from Linda McCartney?

What do you think of this product? Have you tried? Were you impressed?

Vegan food in Hounslow

Sometimes things surprise me in London.

Did you know about this place called Old School Vegetarian Restaurant in Hounslow? Knock me over with something other than a feather because feathers are usually obtained through cruel means.

I can’t believe I just found out about this place when I’ve often lived less than a 15-minute drive away.

The restaurant is on a well-known thoroughfare called Hanworth Road, just a little further west than the Hounslow Bus Garage (if you know, you know).

The restaurant is brightly decorated and, for a vegetarian restaurant, there is quite a significant number of vegan or able-to-be-vegan meals to select. Obviously there is nothing they serve that couldn’t be vegan so here’s hoping they are on their way to being completely plant based.

Josh and I indulged in a burger and wrap, both accompanied by the most delicious coleslaw and seasoned fries. We also snuck in a caesar salad while I made short work of a creamy almond butter shake.

The fries are my life. So crunchy.

Top notch food that was very tasty, however it should be noted that all the vegan meats were Fry’s Family Foods. I know it annoys some people when you go to a restaurant and they are using brands you can buy and use at home.

That’s not a concern of mine as long as the food is done well. Old School Vegetarian Restaurant does it well.

Fabulous vegan cake

There is a superstar baking business in North London that you need to know about.

Heart of Cake is situated in Stoke Newington and is run by the fabulous Lizzie. Lizzie is a one-person cake creation machine, handcrafting some of the finest vegan delights in the capital.

Lizzie recently got in touch with me to ask if I would be interested in sampling one of her creations.

Um, yeah OK. I think I’m kinda interested in VEGAN CAKE!

Check out the photos below to see what Lizzie made especially for me.

Garlic bread and dough balls

Here’s a super quick blog post that might just have you making a rapid dash to your nearest Tesco.

You can now buy not only frozen vegan garlic bread from the UK supermarket chain, but also frozen vegan garlic dough balls.

I picked up a pack of each last night in a London Tesco Extra.

Tesco have #vegan garlic dough balls and garlic baguette in the frozen section!

Milk protest

Have you seen the signs in Tesco supermarkets suggesting their milk helps care for dairy cows?

The signs are part of a broader campaign in which the supermarket giant is telling shoppers that their cow milk products are fairly sourced, making them the right choice for anyone looking to improve outcomes for farmers and cows.

People who understand the cruelty connected to the dairy industry are not too happy about these signs.

All over the UK, consumer activists are removing the signs from dairy cases and positioning them in front of plant-derived milk products such as almond, soya and rice. Vegans are attempting to subvert the advertising campaign and use the signs to get people thinking about the cruelty of dairy.

Below is a photo I took in Tesco Roundhay, Leeds yesterday. It shows that one of the signs has been moved to a shelf holding almond milk.

It would appear this peaceful action of relocating the signs is gaining momentum, with many shoppers sharing their own experiences on social media of moving signs themselves or having seen evidence that others have done so.

In addition, The Vegan Society has asked Tesco to remove all signs from all store is this open letter.

Vegan jelly in a supermarket

Josh and I had just downed a couple of beers in the wonderful Bundobust bar and Indian street food kitchen in Leeds city centre last night when we wandered into the nearest Co-operative supermarket to look for snacks.

As we were mooching along past the pre-packaged fruit, Josh spotted some raspberry jelly cups on the shelf and suggested we check to see if they were vegan.

Being the vile and cynical FGV that I am, I curled my lip and said, “They won’t be vegan”.

I do like being proved wrong sometimes.

What?! Grabbing all the #vegan jelly and fruit cups from Co-Op supermarkets!

A photo posted by Fat Gay Vegan (@fatgayvegan) on

Yes! Vegan jelly cups in a UK-wide supermarket!

I was too tipsy to eat mine last night but I will be investigating later today. Have you tried this cup? What did you think?
