Day trip to Brighton

I imagine a lot of people feel the way I feel about Brighton.

Brighton, UK is one of those places that we think of as being more exciting and alternative than perhaps it really is. The seaside town has always held a certain sense of excitement, mystery, and creative energy, long being a beacon for cultural outsiders.

Queer people, punk rockers, and hippies would converge on destinations such as Brighton to look for likeminded personalities in order to create meaningful community.

In 2025 it now appears impossible to escape capitalism and gentrification, as a visitor to the city finding a Brighton overflowing with expensive tourist trap businesses as the independents get increasingly pushed out. The outsiders who made Brighton an desirable and exciting place are now in turn being rejected by soaring rents and a landscape unfriendly to independent business owners and community groups.

Best vegan Sunday roast in the UK?

I think my buddy Kay likes to tease me.

There I was minding my own business in Mexico, considering what I should put on my tortillas for Sunday brunch, when Kay taunts me with a photo of one of the best vegan Sunday lunches I’ve ever seen.

Check it out.

For those of you unfamiliar with a Sunday roast in the UK, this one appears to have all the crucial elements. Right down to a Yorkshire pudding!

Get along to Loving Hut in Brighton so you can let me know if this is the best vegan Sunday roast in the country.

You can find the location of Loving Hut Brighton on their website.

Extra note: Londoners can check out this Sunday roast option while people in Leeds might want to try this.

Vegetarian restaurant is now a UK chain

By 1847 is a restaurant serving vegetarian food (with a solid showing of vegan offerings) located in the heart of Manchester. You can see my original post about the restaurant from WAY back by clicking here.

I’m not sure if I’ve been completely asleep but somehow I have missed how rapidly this business has expanded and how far flung the new locations are around the country.

By 1847 now have the original Manchester location plus Brighton, Bristol and Birmingham outlets. They are spreading quickly.

Pop along to one of the restaurants to check out their vegan offerings, including a multi-course Sunday lunch option.

It’s a shame that such a gorgeous meat-free restaurant chain with a smart vision on how to expand still includes dairy on the menu. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of my dining experiences with By 1847 but that enjoyment is dampened somewhat by knowing they serve animal derived ingredients.

By 1847 really know what they are doing with food, wine and beer. I sincerely hope they come to see dairy as an unnecessary part of their success.

Follow By 1847 on Instagram and visit their website for location details.

Ms Cupcake goes savoury

Ms. Cupcake has got sugar on lock.

The Brixton bakery does sweet treats like no on else and has been at the forefront of cake business in the UK for years. But what if they turned their hand to savoury food?

Well, you can find out this weekend.

ms cupcake savoury

For the first time ever, Ms. Cupcake will be serving sweet AND savoury food across two mammoth stalls at VegfestUK in Brighton and the savoury sounds divine.

Did someone say chilli, mac & cheese and jackfruit? Yes, they did.

I reached out to Ben at Ms. Cupcake  for some info and he told me:

This is the first time we have ever done two stalls at a show. We’re bringing our traditional Ms. Cupcake sweet stand as well as a hot food stand to VegfestUK Brighton this coming weekend.
On the catering stand, customers will be able to choose from vegan Mac ‘n’ Cheese, Pulled ‘pork’ Jackfruit and Tex-Mex Chilli. There will be a range of mouthwatering toppings available such as hot peppers, sauces and more. There will also be a range of other savoury snacks on the stall to compliment the main dishes.

In news almost as big, we are bringing our homemade vegan lemon curd to the sweet stand as well as branded merchandise for die-hard Ms. Cupcake fans.

Listen to me carefully, readers.

You gave got to get some of that lemon curd in your life. I haven’t had Ms. Cupcake lemon curd for years and I still dream of it.

Sounds like the Ms. Cupcake stands are going to be extremely crowded at VegfestUK this weekend.

Only UK vegan pizzeria

Have you made an effort to visit the only 100% vegan pizza restaurant in the UK?

Photos are starting to flow out of Purezza in Brighton and they are making me feel kinda sad that I’m on the other side of the world. I wonder if they deliver to Mexico?

The restaurant offers a huge range of about 20 pizzas and the menu includes such delicacies as four cheese pizza and chocolate calzone.

Keep scrollin’, scrollin’, scrollin’ to see some of the good stuff.

Design your own pizza

Use your vegan voice to help shape the future of vegan pizza.

Brighton-based pizza restaurant Morelli Zorelli already serves vegan pizza but they want your help in expanding their plant-based range.

The sourdough base specialists have a full-time vegan pepperoni pizza on the menu and most vegetarian items can be veganised with Cheezly at no extra cost.

All of this is awesome, but it gets better.

Pizza and beer

I’m currently in the southern seaside town of Brighton for the annual Vegfest celebrations and I’m investing some time into getting to know some local vegan food.

One plant-based food experience came courtesy of a pizza restaurant called Pizza Face that delivered vegan food and beer to my hotel room.

Check out the photo below.
