Vegan Cats: Paws for Thought?

Post by:

Last year, 8 years after our last cat died, my partner and I adopted an adult male through the Cats Protection League, and called him Moby. He’s the best thing to happen to us in a long time: an endless source of joy and amusement.

The only downside: the daily dealings with death. I’d forgotten how disturbing it is to dish up smelly lumps of meat. But what choice do we have, when cats are obligate carnivores? Predators FFS! It would be cruel, even fatal, to wilfully deprive them of their natural birthright? Right?

BBC documentary highlights tragic consequences of wild animal shows
‘Circus Elephant Rampage’ filmmakers back ADI stop circus suffering campaign

A moving film highlighting the perils of wild animals in circuses will air on BBC Four this evening and tomorrow. ‘Circus Elephant Rampage’ tells the story of Tyke the elephant, who died in a hail of gunfire after she broke free from a circus in Hawaii and went on the rampage, killing her trainer. Yay Pesto!

Post by:

Ok. This might not be exactly earth-shattering news for anyone, but I was delighted to see Sacla have included the words ‘Suitable for Vegans’ on the new packaging of one of their products. Sacla are a household name in the UK and are the go-to people for decent, reasonably-priced pesto. Last year they launched dairy-free versions of their popular basil and tomato pesto jars, using tofu and cashew nuts to compliment the taste and add a cheesey element to the sauces. Regrettably they didn’t mention the word vegan on the jar, although a quick read of the ingredients list confirmed that the products were indeed free from all animal products. So I was pleased to pick up the new-design jar in Sainsbury’s today and see those magic words ‘Suitable for Vegans’ on the back of the jar. I wish more food manufacturers would follow suit!
