A World Famous Drag Artist And A Chubby Vegan Walk Into A Takeaway Shop

Worshipping celebrity vegans can often be a problematic endeavour.

Holding up and celebrating famous people as vegans has often come back to bite our community in the backside.

Miley was championed as an ethical vegan for years right up until she went on the Joe Rogan podcast to tell the world she was eating animals again.

One of my childhood heroes, Drew Barrymore, also went down a similar route. Drew lived as a vegan for years but over the past decade or more had dipped in and out of plant-based eating sporadically. The superstar does promote a lot of vegan food, but it feels as though the argument for ethical veganism is somewhat diluted by her suggesting it’s cool to chop and change on a whim.

I am not really here to drag ex-vegan celebrities (and I do still love both of the mentioned performers. I mean, Flowers is a fabulous song), rather I’d love to shout out a vegan celebrity I feel more comfortable endorsing.

So take a look at who I bumped into yesterday at legendary vegan fried chicken shop, Temple of Seitan.

Fried chicken restaurants in London launch vegan items

Fried chicken chain Chick ’n’ Sours has launched a range of plant-based sandwiches and sides.

The restaurant chain wanted to recreate their K Pop Sandwich in plant-based form and have included all the same flavours in a vegan version. The protein they’re using is seitan.

To emulate the flavours of their K – Pop sandwich, they built up a sandwich on their original bun (which is vegan already) with a vegan Gochujang mayo, the seitan patty (coated in a crunchy coating), chilli vinegar, and a reworked ‘slaw dressing’ to replicate the flavours but without the fish sauce. They top the burger with vegan Sriracha mayo.

The menu also includes plant-based nuggets called No Way Nuggs. These are a different protein using pea and soy that is coated in breadcrumbs. They coating the nuggets in a vegan ginger miso mayo and sprinkle with spring onions, pickled ginger, and sesame.

They can now offer a completely vegan meal on the new menu and have re-engineered versions of their famous sides to make this happen. This set menu includes House Pickles, No Way K-Pop, No Way Ginger Miso Nuggs, Bang Bang Cucumbers, Pickled Watermelon Salad, Fries (without dripping), and plant based Gochujang mayo and vegan Sriracha mayo.

Chick ’n’ Sours now has four branches across London: Haggerston, Seven Dials, Islington and Spitalfields.

You can visit their website and follow them on Instagram.

Please note that Chick ‘n’ Sours is a restaurant that also serves meat and dairy. Their website and social media reflect that fact. If you are looking for a fried chicken experience that is completely vegan, you can dine with Temple of Seitan in Hackney and Camden.

Fundraiser for vegan business in UK

Launched late 2017 by partners Liam and Tilly, Seitan’s Grill is known for being a vegan catering company producing handmade sustainable faux meats.

Liam and Tilly have launched a Kickstarter campaign in order to create a new kitchen space to develop recipes and service the local public.

They are ready to take Seitan’s Grill to the next level.

For the last 14 months the business has been home based within their kitchen, producing everything they sell. Growing organically has been steady but they want to reach more people, produce more products and ultimately provide quality handmade vegan produce to the masses.

They need your support to help fit their commercial production kitchen, featuring a hatch for serving locals.

You can click here to check out the fundraising campaign and see the rewards on offer for backers.

New seitan slices and pieces in the UK

Hey, friends.

Do you remember the new seitan company out of the UK called Love Seitan?

Love Seitan popped up at a few of my markets last year and have been steadily building their business ever since. They enjoyed an investment from VBites to help them with their expansion and now they have released a big range of seitan deli slices and pieces.

Check them out below.

In addition to the slices and pieces, Love Seitan have their large seitan blocks perfect for roast dinners.

The company is starting to roll out these products into independent food stores around the UK, but in the meantime you can order for home delivery from their website.

Superstar vegan meats in London

This is HUGE news for Sgaia Vegan Meats.

The superstar food company has impressed people all over the UK (and the world with shipments heading to New Zealand recently) so it was only a matter of time before a big name store wanted in on the action.

Whole Foods Market stores around the UK are now stocking the Scotland-based vegan meat range. This is huge news for a completely independent vegan business that started so small just a little while ago.

If you are in London, the news gets better for you this weekend.

Sgaia will be at Whole Foods Market Piccadilly Circus all weekend handing out samples. You can visit them on Saturday (June 24) or Sunday (June 25) between midday and 3pm and 4pm until 7pm and try some of their plant based Mheats.

Get along and celebrate with this very deserving vegan business.

New vegan food

Last week, I had the pleasure of being invited to a new menu tasting event held by tibits in Heddon Street.

You all know tibits, right? It is a vegetarian restaurant in central London with a huge selection of vegan food where you serve yourself and pay by plate weight.

The management enjoy having bloggers and influencers in to give feedback when they are ready to launch a new seasonal menu. Check out the photos below of the three dishes that stood out head and shoulders above the rest for me at one of these tasting events last week.

Taste it, Brighton!

Super quick public service announcement.

One of the most exciting vegan meat products to enter the UK market in a long while is Muscolo di grano and if you are in Brighton on Saturday July 26, 2014 you will be able to taste some of their goodness for free.

The Muscolo di grano products are delicious meat analogues crafted from grains and lentils, creating a texture and taste that rates amongst the best vegan alternatives I’ve tasted anywhere.

I recently bought a few of their products which have ended up in everything from pasta salads to pizza pockets. See my hot meat and cheese sandwich below before scrolling further for information about a free product tasting event.
