Vegan halloumi for the UK

If I had a pound for every time someone told me they would be vegan except they love halloumi too much, I’d be writing this blog post on a gold plated keyboard.

Well, get ready to see a whole bunch of non-vegans make the switch because Violife is about to launch a vegan halloumi into the UK market.

I was able to snap up a pack of this new cheese from the Violife stand at the recent Just V Show in London where I was told it will be available via Sainsbury’s stores in mid-August.

We have tried frying the cheese in a pan and it was extremely tasty. I have never tasted halloumi made from animal milk in my life so I am unable to tell you how this compares. That said, I would definitely buy this vegan version and can’t wait to try it in a melted cheese sandwich.

How excited are you about vegan halloumi?

Vegan mac n cheese

In their quest to seemingly become the mainstream supermarket with the most vegan-friendly products in the UK, Sainsbury’s has started selling this ready-made meal.

Check it out.

Yes. Ready-made macaroni and cheese done vegan!

I’ll definitely be giving this a try when I get back to the UK. If you have tasted it, what did you think?

Extra note: these photos were taken by my buddy, Roger. Please take a moment to discover Roger’s website from which he takes orders for awesome pins and badges.

Quorn launch vegan soups

Oh!

I’ve never eaten vegan Quorn but seeing as news of their brand almost broke my blog last time, I figured you would all want to know about this development.

The Quorn Facebook page states these are available in Sainsbury’s right now.

Both of these soups feature the vegan Quorn pieces. This is a perfect example of how huge corporations are responding to vegan demands. If it makes money for them, they will do it.

Just desserts

Need some affordable vegan desserts?

Get along to your nearest Sainsbury’s (well, not a Sainsbury’s Local – they don’t have anything) and pick up a few tubs of these frozen coconut milk desserts.

Not pictured: the vanilla. My nearest store had them at £3 a tub.

What do you think? Excited? If you have tried these, fill us all in with your feedback.

Vegan jam tarts in UK supermarket

Not a lot of writing with this post but what needs to be said other than VEGAN JAM TARTS?!

Get to Sainsbury’s to try these gluten free, vegan jam tarts. I love them!

Probably not vegan. Stop eating them!

UPDATE

Wall’s have now confirmed to multiple people via social media and email that the new Swedish Glace ice creams ARE suitable for vegans. They have also apologised for the confusion caused by saying the opposite a few days ago. Buy them all, eat them all.

END UPDATE

I wrote about my bewilderment caused by the new Swedish Glace chocolate coated strawberry ice cream sticks not saying ‘vegan’ on the box when all other Swedish Glace products do have vegan written on them.

Well, straight from the source (with the source weirdly being Walls ice cream) we have been told that these products ARE NOT VEGAN.

I am not 100% sure that this is true. People running social media accounts have made mistakes before but this matches up with Sainsbury’s listing the products as only vegetarian on their website.

I am still waiting to get a response to my email from parent company Unilever but I think it is safe to say that all vegans in the UK should STOP buying this product.

END UPDATE

This news is blowing up everywhere so you have probably already seen it, but in case you haven’t…

Sainsbury’s are now selling boxes of strawberry flavoured soya ice cream treats made by Swedish Glace. The chocolate covered delights come five to a box.

Exciting news, but weirdly the Sainsbury’s website lists this new product as suitable for vegetarians but not vegans. A quick search reveals they use ‘vegan’ to describe other Swedish Glace products such as this tub.

I’ve emailed Unilever (yes, that is the company in charge of Swedish Glace) to ask if the strawberry and chocolate sticks are made with only vegan ingredients but am yet to hear back.

Please fill us in if you have any information on the veganicity of these ice creams. I can’t get my chubby hands on a box from here in Mexico but I thought someone reading would have a closer look to see if the box is labelled vegan.

Jackfruit glory

Remember a few days ago when I posted about the best accidentally vegan product of 2015 being a cherry and bourbon sauce?

If you were too busy sleeping off your partying antics, you can check it out here.

Skip forward to today and I got my hands on the original version of this life-changing Jim Beam cooking sauce. Check out what we are having for dinner tonight.

Don’t be jealous BUT… pulled jackfruit cooked up in this Jim Beam sauce. Fuck this is good! #vegan

Yes. Pulled jackfruit cooked in bourbon and BBQ sauce. Life is good.

The Jim Beam sauces are both suitable for vegans and available at Sainsbury’s.

Korean done vegan

How often do you see Korean cooking sauces labelled vegan in the supermarket?

I bet it’s not very often.

Check out these gorgeous-looking sauces called Yogiyo spotted by Josh in our local Sainsbury’s yesterday.

The blue label bottle is a dipping sauce while the orange is a cooking sauce. A third bottle does exist for stir frying but sadly that contains honey. How fab would it be if they could switch out the honey and veganise the entire range?

The company founder, Sue Youn, launched what she claims is the UK’s first Korean ingredient range via an appearance on the TV show Dragon’s Den. With the range now in hundreds of supermarkets around the country, Sue must have presented a great pitch on the show!

You can follow Yogiyo on Twitter.

Have you tried these sauces? How were they?

Vegan icing

Need quick and simple icing for cake decorating purposes? Of course you do!
Pop into your local Sainsbury’s for these squeezy tubes of convenience.

Both tubes have the word ‘vegan’ printed on the reverse and both can be found in the baking section of the supermarket. As you can see in the photo, the tubes come with three piping nozzles for creating designs and lettering.

Have you tried these cake toppings?
