Two vegan businesses in the UK bow out

Running a vegan business in 2019 is brutal.

The costs associated with keeping a business alive can swamp an entire operation overnight and it takes nerves of steel to keep an independent set-up running and in profit.

Even with the best intentions and highest work ethic, circumstances can transpire to force the closure of a business. This can happen unexpectedly and suddenly. The decision to close a business isn’t always about money but it usually plays a big role.

Two women-owned, UK-based vegan businesses have announced closure within a 24-hour time period this week and as sad as I am to see them go, I’m also overwhelmed by feelings of gratitude for how these two businesses pushed veganism forward over recent years.

First news to hit my radar was the announcement that multi-award winning Hannah Banana Bakery was closed with immediate effect.

Owner and baker Hannah started the business back in 2011 and went on to absolutely change the landscape of free-from baking.

Her cakes and treats made fans out of people all over the UK and got more than a few rave mentions on this blog.

Hannah has announced this week that her business has come to an end immediately due to her decision to take on a different job.

The baked goods made by Hannah Banana Bakery were second to none and what Hannah did for families on the south coast is nothing short of amazing. Her cakes (and the excruciating and relentless hard work to get them made on time) allowed people to mark celebrations without feeling as though they were missing out.

Truth be told, they were getting better cakes from Hannah than they would ever have gotten from a non-vegan place.

Hannah Banana Bakery was one of the best and the UK is not the same without it. Thank you Hannah for being such a hard working vegan hero for so many years.

Sad news part two?

Legendary and groundbreaking retail dessert company Pudology is no more.

Watch this Facebook video from founder Lucy to hear the news.

Pudology is one of those brands that forged the way for the mainstreaming of veganism.

When Lucy started her plant-based dessert brand, she threw herself into it 100% and made enormous, groundbreaking strides.

Her amazing products got mainstream supermarket listings and gave hope to people all over the UK that veganism and deliciousness could go hand in hand.

Pudology dessert pots were widely available and vegans everywhere were delighted to have a world class, accessible product to call our own.

Lucy was always a wonderful supporter of events I hosted and never lost sight of the importance of giving back at a grassroots level. I gave away hundreds of her dessert pots over the years at potlucks and parties.

Pudology will be sorely missed but never forgotten.

What Lucy contributed with her gorgeous brand cannot be overstated. The UK supermarket landscape would not be swamped with vegan options like it is today without her personal sacrifices and invaluable contributions.

Thanks again to Hannah and Lucy. They made an indisputable difference in the fight to improve outcomes for animals and raise the profile of veganism in the UK.

Pudology now easier to find

You all know and love the gorgeous vegan dessert pots known as Pudology. I wrote about their jumbo sized packs back here.

Well, good news just got better.

You can now find Pudology in 227 Sainsbury’s stores around the UK! The brand announced this huge news via their Instagram last week.

You can find out if a Sainsbury’s near you is stocking Pudology by searching this list on their website. You also find independent stockists of the brand who you should definitely support as well.

Yay for the widespread availability of vegan desserts!

Big vegan dessert pots

You all know about Pudology so I’m not even going to waste my time reminding you of the decadent, creamy dessert pots this company makes.

They are one of the finest plant-based food lines in the entire UK.

Well, get ready to tweet this news to your nearest and dearest because Pudology are launching BIG tubs in Ocado.

As you can see above, the larger tubs are available in the Deeply Decadent Chocolate and the Smooth Chocolate Orange varieties.

But how much bigger are they?

You will be used to the original tubs coming as 85g twin packs, but these new tubs are a jumbo-sized 350g!

If you hurry, Ocado have these new larger tubs on special deal for £1 off.

Enjoy and follow Pudology on Instagram.

Pudology is spreading UK wide

I adore Pudology desserts so I was happy to hear this news of their continued spread around the UK.

From today (Monday April 25, 2016) Pudology is part of a trial that Waitrose is running in 48 of its stores. The supermarket chain is putting all chilled free from products together in one space for the first time. Shoppers will be able to find their favourite dairy-free delicacies more easily.

Currently, Pudology can be found in six Waitrose stores with two of their products (Banoffee & Chocolate) but this trial means they will be launching the Millionaires Pud flavour into the 48 participating stores (at an awesome 25% off offer!). If the trial is a big success, the concept of a free from chilled section will be rolled out to more stores taking Pudology to even more people.

You can check out the Pudology website here.

Choc orange delight

When I handed out my Day of the Dead vegan supper club goodie bags, one of the items that got a lot of attention and murmurs of appreciation was the Chocolate Orange Pud cups from vegan dessert experts Pudology.

As you might know from an old post of mine, the Pudology cups are filled with smooth, sweet and irresistible gluten free pudding. They can be purchased online from grocery retailers in either chocolate, strawberry, lemon or banoffee flavours and are starting to become more widely available in high street supermarkets, too.

You know all this. Why am I droning on about puddings that you have seen and tasted?

I am simply giving you a refresher course so when I give you my opinion on the new Pudology flavour, you can skip quickly to the part where you run to buy your own pack.

The Chocolate Orange Pud is delicious. It is dense, creamy and decadent. The orange is perfectly balanced with the choc. The pudding pots come in packs of two and I don’t know if I will ever be able to show enough restraint to eat just one and save one for later. They are too lovely.

The Chocolate Orange Pud cups are currently exclusive to Sainsbury’s but I have been assured by Pudology that we will start seeing them popping up in independent health food stores in the new year.

Tasty!

Gimme that Pudology

If you missed out on September’s London Vegan Potluck, I am sorry to say you also missed out on one of the best vegan dessert products to ever be available in the UK. But don’t be too sad… Pudology tubs are spreading across the country like wildfire.

Dairy-free desserts are becoming increasingly common, but not much of the market can claim to be anywhere near as delicious as these creations. Pudology make their mouthwatering puds in chocolate, strawberry and banoffee flavours.

My personal favourite is the chocolate. You know when something is sweet, creamy, smooth and irresistible all at the same time? Enough said. When Pudology samples were available at the potluck, the banoffee flew off the shelves and many attendees were singing some fairly extravagant praises for the dessert.

Guest review: London Vegan Potluck September 2012

The London Vegan Potluck stormed back into the capital this week and the food was on another level of awesome. New vegan dessert champions Pudology were on board as sponsors to add to the enjoyment.

Because I was too busy eating on the night, my dear friend Cookie Von Stir has kindly dropped in to show you what you missed.
