Vegan pizza in Exeter!

As much as I would like to eat every single vegan food item in every part of the world, there is only one FGV and I physically can’t be everywhere.

Thankfully, friendly readers like Alex send me awesome guest reviews of food in their neighbourhood and places they have visited.

Check out what Alex has to say about gorgeous vegan pizza being served up in Exeter:

The Old Fire House in Exeter is famous for two reasons. A tenuous possibility it was the inspiration for the “Leaky Cauldron Pub” in Harry Potter is the first and, more importantly, its amazing vegan pizza is the second.

We have always used the Harry Potter link as a brilliant excuse to take visitors to this pub and then stuff our faces with pizza.

The menu actually has a number of vegan options, all very clearly marked. If you are organised enough on a Sunday, which we have only succeeded in being once, the Vegan Sunday Roast Lunch is stunning. The Chickpea & Spinach cake is not remarkable but the thick gravy and roasted vegetables more than make up for it.

In the evening pizza is their thing and we are talking big square pub style pizza served minutes after you order. It would be a challenge for anyone to finish a whole pizza themselves. The best ratio we have found so far is three people to two pizzas.

You have four vegan options but to be honest, who would bother with a plain or mushroom pizza when you can have something with wacky toppings. Chickpeas on a pizza. I class that as a wacky topping and together with the sweet roasted butternut, it works really well.

A word of warning on the next logical choice, the “Fired Up”. It is, as the menu says, extra hot. Don’t let this put you off though. It is really good with the heat coming from the smaller sliced red chiles rather than the big chunky jalapeños which are just tangy. If you are not into the heat then best to avoid, but if you are sharing pizzas then give it a try. It really compliments the sweetness of the butternut pizza.

Any vegan pizza review needs to go into detail about the vegan cheese. In the case of these pizzas the cheese is of no real significance, rather the flavours and textures all come from the other toppings. The cheese is a mere decoration to make the pizza conform to what society has convinced us it should look like.

Being a pub popular with students from the local university, drink prices are reasonable. Along the back walk behind the bar they have boxes of local ciders, many of which are proper cider that are not the carbonated type that feel like they will take the enamel off your teeth they are so dry. As these ciders are from smaller producers and typically made traditionally they are more likely to be vegan, but obviously you still need to check. A good place to start is with any made by Cornish Orchards as all their ciders are vegan.

Thanks for the great review, Alex. Next time I find myself in Exeter, I will definitely stop by The Old Fire House for a pizza and a cider.

Maoz London closed?

This is terrible news.

A reader named Chris posted on my Facebook page yesterday to ask if I knew anything about Maoz on Old Compton Street being closed. He said it was shut with no sign of it being temporary and the HappyCow listings site has it marked as closed.

I am devastated.

I can’t remember the number of times I’ve stumbled into the store for a bag of hot chips after a few too many pints at a nearby gay bar.

It really was one of the best places for vegans to eat in Central London.

I have emailed the company to see if they have any news regarding the closure. If you have any further information, please let me know.

Queer Vegan Disco special event: One night only

London has never really known a party like Queer Vegan Disco.

This now-defunct monthly night was always the brightest and best celebration of the LGBT community, our friends, fabulous music and compassion.

If you were one of our regulars, or someone who always thought they would like to attend but never quite made it, there is some great news in store for you.

Queer Vegan Disco returns for one night only this summer!

qvd prince

Your host Fat Gay Vegan (that’s me!) will be back from a 6 month stay in Mexico City and is desperate to resurrect this night one more time.

We will be playing a LOT of our favourite Prince tunes as a celebration of the artist formerly known as the artist formerly known as Prince, plus we will have our usual mix of indie, pop, alternative, rock, dance, 80s, 90s and more.

Of course the venue for this QVD return is the always 100% vegan Kabaret in Wood Green.

We expect turnout to be huge for this one time event, so you will most definitely want to buy your ticket in advance to ensure your entry.

Advance tickets are just £3 plus a small booking fee. If we have any space left on the night, door tickets will be £5. Click here to buy your ticket now.

You should also RSVP to the Facebook event and use the invite button to tell all your friends.

Guest post: Vegan food experience in India

Guest post by Ian McDonald:

DSCN2355

I think this is the best vegan pizza I’ve ever had. I loved the cripsness of the base, the home-made cheesiness of the topping. Perhaps it’s the freshness of the ingredients. It’s definitely in the same rank as the vegan pizzas in East London, but it’s hard to do a side-by-side comparison.

Because this one is in Ahmedabad, India.

Ahmdedabad was the first port of call in India for my radio series “Vegetarianism: The Story So Far”. It has Gandhi’s ashram, and an animal hospital based in a traditional Jain cow sanctuary. (You can hear the latter in the latest episode, about Indian’s animal advocate king.)

It’s in Gujarat, the corner of India closest to Pakistan and the Middle East, and the poor beasts of burden include camels as well as horses and bulls. Many Gujaratis follow vegetarian faiths – Jainism and Vaishnavism. (An Italian traveller in sixteenth century Gujarat once said the locals “do not feed upon anything that contains blood, nor do they permit among them that any injury be done to any living creature, like our Leonardo da Vinci.”)

What’s that? Shut up about history and talk about food? Okay, here’s another picture of food.

DSCN2287

This is a raw chocolate cake. I don’t usually go for raw, but this really moist and tasty.

The recipes are by the fantastic chef Gemma Ferre. Gemma moved to Ahmedabad from London, starting the cafe with her friend Nimi Hirani. Nimi was born in Gujarat, raised in Kenya, worked for the NHS in London, and is a vegan campaigner who provides a home to camels, cows, goats, and even two emus on her land in nearby Kutch.

The Philosophy Club takes up a shopfront in the ground floor of an office block. It’s between the main Hare Krishna temple and a large glossy air-conditioned shopping mall. I’m geeky enough to want to tell you that the district is named Satellite for its space research institutes. When you enter the Philosophy Club you discover a welcoming homely cafe with hardwood furniture, improvised light fittings, and eclectic mismatched crockery that could be in Hackney. Except better.

What Gemma cooks up is truly amazing. She brings much of her native Catalonian experience to the menu – from homemade gnocchi with garlic to Mediterranean cream potato soup. And the folk of Ahmedabad agree – the cafe won “Casual Dining – Best European Cuisine” at the Times of India’s Food Awards for Ahmedabad. Word is, Gemma is planning open a bigger branch closer to the centre of town.

And feast your eyes on the chocolate brownie with walnuts. Delicious.

The Philosophy Club lives up to its name, with a gentle ambience, a bookshelf, and the occasional music or poetry reading. It’s a great little cafe that actively promotes veganism. Part of me wishes it was nearer to home; but I know I shouldn’t be so selfish. For now, I’ll just have to salivate over food pics on the Philosophy Club’s Facebook page.

Ian McDonald produces “The Vegan Option” (tagline: really interesting radio that just happens to be vegan), and is currently working on “Vegetarianism: The Story So Far”, a fascinating exploration of meat-free and compassionate history. Dr Ian McDonald is a BBC-trained digital media producer whose work has been broadcast on national radio in the UK. He lives in East London with Mazzy, a rescued cat.

  • Full disclosure: Nimi was also astoundingly helpful to me in my travels around India, including advice and interpreting Hindi. It became a bit of a base of operations in Ahmedabad. I’ve tried to be objective about the food, but judging by the rave reviews from mainstream Indian media it’s really not just me.

Simplest and best guacamole

You can support the making of these videos and get early access and downloadable PDF copies of the recipes by becoming an FGV patron – click here.

Here’s the recipe:

Makes approximately two cups/serves four

Ingredients:

  • 3 ripe avocados
  • 1⁄4 of a large white onion
  • 1 1⁄2 Roma tomatoes
  • 1 green chile
  • 2 limes
  • A fistsized bunch of fresh cilantro/coriander
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Method:

  • Chop the onion into 1cm square pieces.

  • Do the same with the tomatoes

  • Cut the avocados in half lengthways and scoop out the flesh. Chop into mediumsize (approx. 2cm) cubes

  • Carefully scrape the seeds out of the chile* and chop into very small pieces

  • Wash and pat dry the coriander/cilantro. Chop leaves and stems into small pieces.

  • Combine onion, tomato, chile, cilantro and avocado in a large bowl and add lime juice, salt and pepper to taste

  • For the best flavour, allow flavours to infuse for at least 30 minutes before serving

*Alternatively, leave the seeds in the chile if you like your guac hot!

Serve on its own with tortilla chips or use it on top of tacos, enchiladas, lasagne etc.

New vegan ice creams in London!

Oh dear. I don’t want these new vegan ice creams, I seriously NEED them.

I have written about Juice Baby in the past. This small food provider on impossibly ritzy King’s Road in West London is home to a delicious raw taco bowl and the most glorious caramel slice (read about the eatery here).

News has just reached me of the brand new addition to the Juice Baby line up and if you don’t mind, I’d rather let the photo do all the talking.

I’m not being hysterical when I say they might very well be the finest vegan ice creams I have ever set my chubby eyes upon.

Juice Baby has just moved to the number one spot on places I must visit as soon as I return to London in July. Please dear readers, don’t eat them all before I get there.

Closed vegan café in London set to reopen

Vegan Hippo didn’t exactly disappear with a lot of tears.

The Soho-based café was a bit more miss than hit and loving reviews weren’t flowing from the mouths of diners. However, the owners have seemingly taken advantage of their down time in order to reevaluate how they create and serve food.

And now they are back on the scene. The following message was posted on the Vegan Hippo Facebook page two days ago:

Vegan Hippo is about to reopen! We’ve listened to feedback and are starting again with a new and improved menu, and lots of take-away food too for eating in the park or taking to the office. All suggestions welcomed! Tell us anything you’d especially like to see us offer. Thank you!

Vegan ice lollies only £1 for 5!

Even though I’m in Mexico City sweltering with near (or just over) 30 degrees Celsius temperatures most days, I’m not going to pretend I don’t know how exciting it is when the weather gets a little warmer in the UK.

I saw on a news website that some parts of the country are even pushing 20 degrees Celsius. I am thrilled for you all as I know the last few months have been a bit rough when it comes to weather.

To help you celebrate, I thought I would share this information.

You can buy a box of five vegan ice lollies from Morrisons for just £1. That is damn good value.

Put on your best bikini, grab four of your best friends and get down to the local common with a box before the sun disappears again.

UK supermarket launches new vegan spreads

Roll up, roll up.

Veganism is spreading (pun clearly intended) and Tesco is the latest large supermarket chain to launch its own versions of vegan margarine.

Check out these two varieties:

Both tubs are listed as suitable for vegans on the Tesco website. Click here and here to see the detailed nutrition information.

Have you tried either of these spreads yet? I would love to hear your feedback.

Best vegan food in London just got better

Do you remember when I swore a lot about the food from Cook Daily?

In this blog post (and this one) I wasn’t shy about telling you how freaking awesome this Shoreditch food provider is and I insisted you should all get over there to eat.

Well, now it appears the best food in London has gone and gotten an upgrade.

King from Cook Daily tagged me in this short Instagram video to let me know how the already amazing Full English bowl has been improved.

Check it out!

Yes!

I’m loving life in Mexico City at the moment but I would be the happiest FGV on the planet if I could get my hands on this bowl in East London.

Head on in to Cook Daily for this food glory and please say hi from a very hungry and jealous FGV.
