Cruelty-free curry

Leeds city centre isn’t exactly drowning in vegan food choices, but there is a special eatery that has  been keeping our lot nutritiously-fed for over 20 years.

My meal at Hansa's in Leeds

Hansa’s Gujarati Vegetarian Restaurant is every bit as much an institution as it is a success story. Hansa Dabhi is an accomplished chef, restaurateur, cookbook author, travel guide and business person. She has been at the forefront of quality dining in West Yorkshire for more than two decades and her North Street location employs an all-female staff. Hansa has made many appearances in support of her first cookbook and has been rigorously promoting her second.  Charities supported by Hansa and her customers include Saraswati Vidayala, an organisation committed to constructing schools in India. As you can gather from this paragraph, Hansa is a busy human… and I haven’t even described her food yet.

Sunday buffet at Hansa's

All of the dishes created in the restaurant are vegetarian or vegan. As the name suggests, Hansa’s menu consists of recipes originating in Gujarat. Gujarat is a predominantly vegetarian region situated on the Western coast of India. When you visit Hansa’s, you can choose from Paletta (aubergines and potato), Chevti Daal (split pulses), Channa (chickpeas, chili and cinnamon) and much more. The dinner menu includes three vegan desserts including Seero, described by Hansa as rich semolina cooked in vegetable ghee with sultanas, almond and cardomon. Only vegetable ghee is used in the restaurant, vegan dishes are clearly marked on the menu and all of the wine served is free of animal products.

My meal pictured above is from the Sunday buffet. Every week Hansa’s suspend their menu service for Sunday lunch and instead offer a small range of curries accompanied by side salads and breads. The cost of the buffet is under £10 and the service is as wonderful as always.

Hansa’s is a saving grace for vegans and vegetarians in Leeds. The food is honest, healthy and of a high standard. The person behind the business is honest, hardworking and compassionate. Please visit and enjoy some vegan delicacies from the Gujarat.
