They got the message: eggs are not plant based

A few days ago I wrote about a brand new vegetarian restaurant opening in Notting Hill that was championing the fact that their menu was totally plant-based.

The problem with this statement was that when you got over to their Instagram page, the kitchen staff were busy posting photos of dishes containing chicken eggs.

A bunch of vegans (me included) posted some comments asking what gives with calling eggs a plant-based food.

The Instagram account started deleting its eggy photos and today I noticed they have changed their description to 90% plant-based.

Now only 90% plant-based

That’s right. ‘Totally plant-based’ belongs to us vegans. Don’t be putting it over the door of a restaurant serving eggs.

Mildreds expanding

There is a vegetarian restaurant in Soho that for many years has been a favourite hangout of London vegans. Mildreds on Lexington Street has just enough plant-based dishes to keep compassionate eaters coming back for more, year after year.

There normally isn’t much to report about Mildreds. It serves the same few vegan dishes. Some people adore it. Some people think it’s kinda OK. A lot of people moan about the rude head server (honestly, so rude on occasion but then other times can be pleasant).

But finally there is something new to share.

Top veggie restaurant in London

Here is your chance to let the world know which veggie restaurant you think is the finest in the entire city of London.

Food magazine The Jellied Eel is taking votes to discover the best vegetarian restaurant in the capital. The list is huge and I believe all of my favourites are shortlisted. 222 Veggie Vegan are on there as is the location of London Vegan Drinks, tibits. There are so many quality restaurants on the list that it is rather a difficult task narrowing it down.

Voting closes on May 27 so hurry to be in the running for a dinner for two at the winning restaurant! And of course I would love to know who you voted for… leave me a message in the comments below.

Make mine a gin & tonic

It is well-documented across this site that I am more than partial to a spot of cake now and again. I am also known to enjoy drinking. For years I have dared to secretly dream of an unusual  combination of my two passions. Sure there are plenty of rum cakes being carved up around the world, but I had been longing for something fresh and creative.

Well, somebody must be on the same dream frequency as me as I recently enjoyed a delightful cake infused with a drinking spirit during my visit to the northern city of Manchester.

I was in town to attend a concert by pop/rock experts Ash when I decided to pay a visit to the upmarket restaurant know as Bistro 1847. This handsome vegetarian eatery is located in the centre of the city, just a short stroll from just about anywhere. I had sampled their wares once before, but that was a rushed visit and I was determined to delve a little deeper into their vegan options.
