Veganuary at Danish bakery

As far as Veganuary menus go, this Danish bakery chain has torn ahead of the competition in the UK.

It’s that time of the year when us vegans get inundated with extra options. There are so many plant-based options in January it can be tough to stay on top of it all.

@oleandsteenuk sponsored me to come along to try their Veganuary menu and I was blown away.

The passionfruit slice was heavenly and mousse-y and I want ten more. The berry slice was just as delicious.

I slurped every last drop of the curried sweet potato and coconut soup.

Toasted focaccia sandwich with nduja paste, cheese, and spinach? Perfect.

And… the absolutely stunning raspberry and almond swirl pastry. My life is never gonna be the same. It is buttery and creamy and flaky and my new best friend. I ate two of them.

@oleandsteenuk has 15 London locations and one in Oxford.

Big thanks to @oleandsteenuk and their PR team for the invite.

Temple of Seitan in the North

I’ve been helping legendary London restaurant Temple of Seitan for a little while now and the most common comments I see from customers when I’m hanging around their social media have to do with the North of the UK.

People really want to see a Temple of Seitan location up North.

I’m sorry if I got you excited and made you think there is now a full location of the famous food chain in the North, however you can buy and eat Temple of Seitan in Manchester, Leeds, and Liverpool as part of their collaboration with Yard & Coop.

Yard & Coop is not a vegan restaurant chain, so please use caution if you go sniffing around their website. You could stumble across animal-derived foods.

The vegan offerings however ARE gorgeous-looking and they all use Temple of Seitan chick’n.

Visitors to Yard & Coop can choose between:

AbraKEBABra – seitan with sweet pickled cabbage, diced tomato, minted yoghurt, chilli sauce, pickle chilli and crisp fries wrapped in pitta. All Veganuary dishes are served with a portion of fries

Karen’s Doing Veganuary – Temple of Seitan tenders accompanied with crispy bacon, street slaw, lettuce, tomato, BBQ sauce and vegan mayo

Massive Vegan Cock Burger – a 12″ plant-based version of the original Yard & Coop Massive Cock dish. Standing at 30cm tall, piled high with Temple of Seitan tenders, 2 hash browns, salt and pepper cauliflower, and street slaw. There’s also vegan bacon, cheese slices, lashings of chilli and mint yoghurt, iceberg lettuce, fresh tomato, gherkins, and red onion topped with a seitan wing perched on top. This monster is all crammed within a vegan brioche bun with loads of fries.

These Veganuary specials will not be around forever (until February 6, 2022) so if you are interested, get along to Yard & Coop in Manchester, Leeds, and Liverpool ASAP.

You can get all store location info as well as links for ordering delivery on the Yard & Coop website.

You can follow Temple of Seitan on Instagram.

Now, let’s keep hoping for that permanent Temple of Seitan location in the North!

You Had Me at Halo is a fully vegan creation which will feature Beyond Meat burger patties, gherkins, melted American-style vegan cheese, vegan mozzarella, jalapeños and diced onions, finished with Halo Burger’s signature sauce. You Had Me at Halo will be available from 5th January until 1st February and will be priced at £12.50 for a 12” (or £23.50 for 18”) The pizza will be on offer at all Yard Sale locations for delivery and collection, and for dine-in at their Crofton Park, Crystal Palace, East Dulwich, Hackney Road, Leytonstone and Finsbury Park locations. Veganuary provides the perfect opportunity to do something special so we’re thrilled to be hooking up with our friends at Halo Burger to make a plant-based cheeseburger pizza – the ultimate new year treat!”

While You Had Me at Halo will only be available for January, Yard Sale Pizza’s is serving vegan pizzas forever! Veganuary gets global sponsors

To mark World Vegan Day on 1 November, 2020, popular vegan food brands The Fry Family Food Co. and Oumph! have announced their official sponsorship of Veganuary 2021.

International Marketing Director at Fry’s and Veganuary ambassador of six years, Tammy Fry, will be spearheading the month-long challenge on behalf of the brands to encourage people worldwide to try a plant-based diet for January and beyond.

“As a lifelong herbivore, mother and business leader in the plant-based food space, Veganuary is an opportunity to share my years of knowledge and support people regardless of where they’re at in their plant-based food journey,” said Tammy Fry.

She continued, “Fry’s has a history of leading plant-based initiatives, like Veganuary, in South Africa. This is the first year we’ve been able to step up as a global sponsor and I cannot wait to work with our sister brand Oumph!, to use our collective reach and resources to help drive record participation around the world to make plant-based eating the new normal.”

The Veganuary pledge works by signing up participants who will receive 31 days of recipes, shopping guides, meal plans, restaurant suggestions, social media community groups, and more to take them on a taste adventure full of new flavour experiences, as well as a kinder way of eating.

The LikeMeat brand will also be amplifying the initiative in Germany.

“We are excited that Fry’s and Oumph! are part of a growing movement, joining forces as our official sponsor brands of the Veganuary 2021 campaign to inspire people to move to a plant-based diet as a way of protecting the environment, preventing animal suffering, and improving the health of millions of people”, says Ria Rehberg, CEO of Veganuary.

How to stay vegan for the rest of your life

This post was originally published as my column in Vegan Life Magazine a few years ago.

If you would like to read my monthly column, you can subscribe to Vegan Life Magazine online now.

So, you’re a vegan. Congratulations. Now what?

If you currently find yourself newly vegan, you are not alone.

Over the past few years, January has become a favourite time of year for people to explore what it means to live vegan. Dietary habits of old are replaced with plant-based groceries as thousands of consumers begin expanding their ideas surrounding compassion to include the welfare of non-human animals.

If you are one of those who decided the festive season or January was a good time to try veganism on for size, you are probably a few weeks into your plant-based adventure as you read this column.

The hard job of trying to convince you that veganism is worthwhile is obviously out of the way, so I won’t waste precious energy listing the reasons why animals are important. I’ve got a lot of leftover chocolates to eat, so let’s just do what we have to. OK?

I’m more interested in chatting with you about STAYING vegan for the long term.

You and veganism got together a short while ago, but let’s be honest with ourselves. The honeymoon period is coming to a close. Being vegan so far has been effortless because you were happy to have found something you could see would make a big, fat positive contribution to the planet.

This initial excitement of committing to veganism was enough to spur you on through what otherwise might have been tough time.

The bacon jokes and baffled looks didn’t touch you these past few weeks because you were ecstatic to finally be living vegan after all these years. Doing the right thing felt so darn good and you have been riding that wave of positivity since you made the switch. Right?

But what amount the months ahead? Being a happy and committed vegan might just take a little bit of planning and self-care, so I’m dishing up tips for staying vegan after the initial excitement has worn off.

Tip number one is to find like-minded people. Get along to social groups, shop at your local vegan street food market, and fill your calendar with vegan food festivals. I’m not saying you will make lifelong friends, but at the very least you will feel less isolated in your choices.

Try not to put yourself in situations where it is going to be tougher on you socially. A meal out with non-vegan friends isn’t the obstacle course it once was thanks to all the vegan menus being offered up by mainstream restaurant chains. Always make your voice heard when a restaurant is being picked for a night out with friends and you’ll eat well every time.

Know your facts and practise talking about your veganism. I often say that a well-informed, unapologetic and friendly vegan is the best advertisement for the cause. Stand firm behind your reasoning and chat happily with anyone who is curious. You might just be opening their eyes to veganism and of course you will be reaffirming your own commitment.

Inspiration is everywhere. Follow vegan recipe blogs on social media for new ideas that will keep your love affair with vegan eating in fine form. Be adventurous in the kitchen and stay updated with the latest vegan food trends.

Once you have got the plant-based food part of being a vegan in place, start looking at other areas of your life that can be veganised. Need new shoes? Try non-leather. Get familiar with household cleaning products that are not tested on animals and if you wear make up, start buying animal-friendly brands.

Most importantly, work hard to keep your vegan community an inclusive, strong and welcoming place. You are going to love being vegan even more than you already do if you are surrounded by other people who love being vegan. Look for ways to weave your veganism into other aspects of compassionate living. Volunteer with a local garden that supports at-risk members of your community.

Shop with (or join) a local grocery cooperative in order to create better opportunities for workers. Keep your savings in a bank that limits investments into unethical projects. If you can afford to do so, shop with local independent vegan businesses in order to keep money in your community. When you are helping to organise vegan events, ensure the space is accessible for everyone.

For anyone with a vegan journey that is just commencing, I say congratulations. Enjoy your choice to help animals and keep them positioned as the reason you went vegan.

Once you have that deep understanding of why you are vegan in your heart and your mind, it is close to impossible to go back. As your vegan journey continues, be confident that your choices are improving outcomes for non-human animals more and more each day.

Arancini Brothers to stay vegan

A few weeks ago, I shared news about London fast food chain Arancini Brothers turning their Old Street location into a 100% vegan eatery.

Since January 2, 2018 the outlet has served thousands of vegan and vegan-curious customers (as well as some meat eaters who just want outstanding food) who have raved about the extensive and delicious vegan menu.

As it is halfway through their vegan month, I dropped in on owner Dave Arkin to find out how it has been for the business and what the future holds.

How has the vegan month been for Arancini Brothers Old Street?

The support we’ve had from our regular customers and the vegan community has made the first few weeks the most incredible and satisfying experiences since selling our first risotto ball almost 9 years ago.

Have you been surprised by the interest and support of vegans?

More delighted than surprised. I have to say a big thank you to all the support we’ve had from you (that’s me, FGV!) and the vegan community. You have all made our vegan switch at Old Street possible.

Any news on the future?

After just two weeks of running our Old Street location as a fully vegan business, we’ve decided to keep the location vegan for good. It will always be a fully vegan place to eat and I couldn’t be happier with the decision.

How incredible is this news?!

Arancini Brothers Old Street is now a 100% vegan food outlet, 100% of the time. Forever.

I would like to extend my personal gratitude to Dave and his team for taking this leap of faith. The impact this will have in their part of London, across the UK, and further around the world is impossible to calculate but people are taking notice.

This is monumental.

Dave is showing you can do a good thing and still run a business. It doesn’t have to be one or the other.

You can follow Arancini Brothers on Instagram and click here to see the post I did about their huge vegan menu at Old Street (including photos!).

If you want to see the exact location of Arancini Brothers Old Street, you can thanks to Google Maps. Remember that the outlet is open between Monday and Friday between 9:30am and 4:00pm.

Vegan supper club at Cable Street

Beiroot is a vegan Lebanese food business which aims to educate people on the importance of what they are eating. They believe in supporting a region heavily affected by conflict by using Zaytoun (a social enterprise which supports Palestinian farmers) products and donating a percentage of their profits to Kitrinos Healthcare (a charity providing medical relief to refugees along the Greek coast).

To mark the end of Veganuary, Beiroot will be hosting their first supper club at 10 Cable Street on Saturday 27 January, 2018. The evening will feature traditional Lebanese food and will also support a region deeply affected by conflict by using Zaytoun products, to support Palestinian farmers, as well as donating 2.5% of profits to Kitrinos.

The menu for the night is:

Vegan menu at All Bar One

If you can keep up to date with all the non-vegan places around the UK falling over themselves to serve vegan food, you are doing a better job than me.

Every single day seems to bring news and I feel like lots of it is hurtling straight past me. It’s too much!

However, one piece of news that didn’t evade my chubby gaze is the brand new vegan menu being featured for Veganuary by All Bar One.

You know All Bar One, right?

The famous bar chain has more than 50 locations around the UK and is often a favourite meeting spot for friends. I think All Bar One was the first place to serve me booze when I first moved to the UK back in 1998.

But the food!

Check out the menu:

Doesn’t that sound like a well-thought out vegan menu?

Of course I’m not satisfied with simply showing you the menu, so I asked All Bar One to send me some photos of these news dishes.

Can you handle this?

How about that food?!

Everything looks splendid and I could really see myself eating a few servings of those potatoes.

Check out the very special deal All Bar One has for Veganuary. You can devour three vegan dishes for £13.

Visit All Bar One online to find out their locations close to you.

Veganuary

Do you know someone who you suspect is sympathetic to the idea of going vegan? You really should introduce them to the idea of Veganuary.

What is Veganuary?

This month long campaign is designed “to reduce the suffering of animals by inspiring and supporting people across the globe to go vegan for the month of January”. Not a outcome to be taken lightly!

veganuary10n-1-web

The idea is simple.

People pledge to only eat vegan food for the entire month of January. They register with the Veganuary website and receive support in the form of recipes, inspiring stories, an eating out guide and even a vegan product directory.

Of course it would be brilliant if every person participating in Veganuary stayed vegan forever, but I think this month-long trial gives people a less threatening opportunity to explore compassionate eating. Maybe some of the people participating in Veganuary wouldn’t try an animal-free diet if they were asked to go vegan instantly and forever. The commitment of just one calendar month could work as the key to getting people to see veganism as a viable option. They come for the month, but a lot of them stay forever.

If you are not vegan, please consider taking part in Veganuary in 2015. Click here to visit the website. You can also like the campaign on Facebook and follow it on Twitter.

If you are vegan, work hard over the coming days to see if you can get friends and family to pledge to take part in Veganuary.
