I asked Rebecca, owner and legendary hero of Temple of Seitan, what she will be serving at Temple of Camden and here is what she disclosed:

It will be the same menu as Hackney plus the Hot Chicken Burger, the Cheeseburger menu, 50/50 chips, and popcorn snack packs. We will also have a deli section with coffee, bagels, toasted sandwiches, and sweet bakery treats!

OK. Are you pumped for this, London?!

Vegan fried chicken

Even though I first reported the opening of vegan fried chicken shop Temple of Hackney back at the beginning of the year, I only got to eat with the business for the first time a few days ago.

This isn’t so much a review as it is a love letter.

Temple of Hackney is the food business of my dreams. What they are doing is the definition of groundbreaking and there is nobody on the planet doing what they do to this level.

The menu is outstanding and irresistible.

Crispy chips. Juicy seitan with crunchy coating. Gravy pots. Vegan chicken poppers. Burgers.

Every single item is world class and Temple of Hackney is one of the finest vegan food outlets on the planet. No debate.

Follow them on Instagram and eat with them as soon and as often as you can.

Temple of Hackney update

After taking London by storm and firmly establishing themselves as darlings of the mainstream tabloids, vegan fried chicken shop Temple of Hackney has just celebrated one month of trading.

So, how are they doing?

Is business still thriving as the grand opening frenzy fades into the past?

I caught up with owner and Temple of Seitan founder Rebecca McGuinness to find out exactly how the situation is for London’s first vegan fried chicken shop a little over a month in:

Congratulations on such a tremendous opening period. Just how busy has it been in the shop? Has it surpassed your expectations?

Thanks so much! It’s been unbelievable, we never thought in a million years we would be this busy and we are so grateful for all the support. It’s been a lot of hard work but to have this response in just a month as a small business is so surreal and we feel so lucky. We have acquired a second kitchen to keep up with demand and have gone from 4 staff to 13 in a matter of weeks!

What is the general feedback you and the team have been getting from customers?

General feedback has been really positive, the homemade meats have been met with great response, but the surprise dish is the mac and cheese – I would say it’s as popular as the chicken!

We also notice a lot of feedback about the friendliness and great service from our team. We definitely have to give them a shout out as they truly are the nicest and hardest working bunch around!

Do you have any sense of how many non-vegans are eating with you? What has their reaction been like?

We have had a lot of non-vegans come through that are trying to cut down on meat consumption but also some that come out of curiosity or along with vegan friends. We have had people say they prefer seitan chicken on several occasions which is obviously the highest honour! Haha.

The mainstream press has really taken to your story in a big way. How does all that attention feel and how are you managing the PR demands while running the shop?

It can be very full on and unfortunately due to this we aren’t as quick to get back to everyone at present – but as I say we are so lucky to have this kind of press as a small business and certainly wouldn’t be enjoying the instant success we have had without it.

Do you have any upcoming developments or top secret news you would like to share with my readers? What can they expect from Temple of Hackney in the future?

We do! We are working on a new menu that we plan to reveal very soon, including some exciting dishes we have shared early on in our Instagram feed. The menu will still have the “chicken shop” vibe, but will feature some new junk food favourites. We can’t wait to share them with everyone! We will also have extended opening hours shortly.

Finally, do you have a message for your loyal customers who have helped make the opening such a success? I’ve seen photos of them lining up out the door in the rain and snow!

We really do have the most incredible customers and are constantly in awe of their patience and kindness. From those who have been with us from our first stall in Brixton, our weekend stalls in Brick Lane to the new friends we have met in Hackney, we cannot thank you all enough. This first month of opening has been very challenging and we have learned so much in such a short space of time- but to have the support and understanding of the community made our transition from street food pop up to store a dream come true. We couldn’t have come this far without you. We say this often but the UK has the most incredible vegan community and has been so welcoming and friendly to a couple of junk food fiends from down under.

BREAKING NEWS: fried chicken location

When I broke news of Temple of Seitan announcing plans to open the UK’s first ever fried chicken shop, it set off shock waves around the vegan Internet.

People went absolutely wild for the news.

In keeping with my tradition of bringing the most fun news first, here is the scoop on just exactly where the fried chicken shop will be AND the official opening date.

Temple of Hackney

Grand opening: Saturday January 14, 2017 at midday

Address: 10 Morning Lane, Hackney E9 6NA

How amazing is the name?! What you can see above is a sneak preview of the inside wall of the shop.

I asked Rebecca of Temple of Seitan (and of course Temple of Hackney) how she was feeling ahead of the launch. Here is what she told me:

It is equal parts excitement and anxiety! We can’t wait to share the fruits of our labour over the last 3 months. The past year of doing stalls and festivals has gone so quickly and we almost couldn’t believe it was real when the signage and graphics went up today. In store, people can expect the usual fast food experience, except that they will be free to attack all items on the menu without having to worry about ingredients. Hopefully, we can fool a few omnis who stumble in as well.

Temple of Hackney, people. Make it your place of worship.

Breaking news: vegan fried chicken shop

In the history of breaking news on this blog, I’m not sure I’ve ever written anything this exciting.

Sit down.

London, you are about to get the world’s first 100% vegan fried chicken shop.

OK. Now you can leap to your feet and fist pump like a champ. This news is seriously the most exciting thing to happen to anyone. EVER.

If you visit this part of the Internet with any regularity, you will know that I am obsessed with the crispy savoury perfection that is Temple of Seitan. Their range of deep fried seitan snacks, tubs of mac n cheese and filled sandwiches is in the top 5 things to eat on the planet in my (always humble) FGV opinion.

There is world class and then a little higher up in the clouds, there is Temple of Seitan.

Enough of this adulation. I asked Rebecca of Temple of Seitan to tell me what the heck is going on and she said:

In January 2017, we’ll be opening London’s (and maybe the world’s!) 1st 100% vegan chicken shop. We’re looking forward to providing a vegan alternative for Londoners craving a bit of takeaway.

She is so relaxed about it. I would have added in words such as ‘pioneers’, ‘earth-altering’ and ‘exceptionally unique’.

Clear all your January plans. Make room for the new fried chicken shop by Temple of Seitan.

This is not a drill.

Extra note: Catch Temple of Seitan at my Vegan Christmas Market on Saturday December 17, 2017. Details here and you can RSVP on Facebook.

Temple of Seitan

There is a new vegan food business in London that has me more than simply excited. I’m absolutely flipping my wig over this stuff!

Can you see that deep-fried, crunchy glory? Look at it!

Temple of Seitan is a street food endeavour that will turn even the most determined frown upside down.

There isn’t much more to say other than they make fried seitan. In fact, they make the best fried seitan I think I have ever encountered on the planet. I had a basket of the good stuff on Friday at the Just V Show and was so thoroughly blown away that I went back for another on Saturday.

You need to follow Temple of Seitan on Instagram to keep track of all the rad events they will be at in coming months.

I love Temple of Seitan and if you want to be happy, you will make them a part of your life. If you have no interest in being happy, forget I said anything and go back to looking at the slate-grey Victorian sky outside your double glazed window.
