Yay for V REV Manchester

What the hell is going on with award-winning Manchester vegan café V-Revolution?

Nothing… apart from the fact they are busy moving into huge new premises and setting an example on how to be effective allies for all of their customers!

Let me back up for a second.

V-Revolution isn’t called V-Revolution anymore. The café owners decided a name change was in order to coincide with the new location and they now call themselves V Rev Vegan Diner.

And the new location?

V Rev have taken over a space that is roughly four times the size of the old place. The new Edge Street outlet has much more seating and is being lovingly decorated in a painstaking manner by a team of dedicated staff and hired contractors.

The new V Rev is being loaded up with progressive and supportive messages, fittings and imagery. One example of this can be seen in the toilet sign.

Check it out:

The owners have taken the simple but thoughtful step to ensure nobody is compromised or othered during a visit to their diner. Customers can access one of three gender neutral toilet cubicles featuring (shock horror) a toilet that works for anybody, no matter how they identify or don’t identify their gender.

Here is a little bit of information I lifted from the Portland Community College website that I would like to share:

For trans* and gender nonconforming individuals, gender segregated bathrooms can be spaces where they are met with intimidation, harassment, run-ins with security, and/or violence. These occurrences happen when people using the restroom police the gender of others based on binary assumptions and expectations of who men and women are and what they look like. This policing can effect trans* individuals, but also cisgender individuals (those who are not trans*) who present or express their gender in ways that are not culturally normative. This phenomenon is commonly referred to in gender minority communities as “The Bathroom Problem,” and is an experience that most trans* and gender nonconforming people have encountered, often repeatedly, in their lives.

Gender segregated bathrooms threaten the safety of many trans* and gender nonconforming individuals. In addition to being a safety concern, this bathroom configuration can lead to health concerns. When one does not have a bathroom option that they feel comfortable and/or safe accessing, they may choose to not use the bathroom. Depending on how a person goes about avoiding the bathroom, whether it be by not eating or drinking all day or by holding it, doing so can cause serious health problems.

You can click here to read more information about all gender or gender neutral toilets at Portland Community College. The information page includes common arguments and rebuttals for gender neutral toilets.

V Rev is showing how simple inclusivity can be. Gender neutral toilets don’t take much more money (if any in some cases) to set up but can make immeasurable difference to trans, gender non-conforming and non-binary people.

I asked V Rev to go into a little detail about how their new diner is inclusive in other ways and this is what they told me:

Hiya Sean! The whole premises is wheelchair accessible – we’re up to code on layout and spacing but as you know there’s always quite a difference between legislation and real life so we welcome feedback from disabled customers on anything we might be able to do to improve. As we’re over 2 floors we have a lift to the basement. As well as a separate staff loo we have three all-gender toilets: two the standard size and one wheelchair accessible with a baby-changing unit in. We have sanitary bins in all but they’re foot pedal operated as standard so we have a manual touch-open one in the accessible cubicle.

The usual condom/sanitary wear dispensers in loos come stocked as standard & with an ongoing refill contract with the big brands like Durex, Tampax and others who use nasty chemicals and test on animals so we’ve sought out two vintage capsule dispensers (used to be used for sweets/toys), the condom one is stocked with Glyde and a little leaflet about consent, the tampon one is stocked with (Time of the Month) tampons, three per capsule which ‘pays forward’ one to a person in need through .

You can read the consent leaflet supplied by V Rev. Click here to access it.

Let’s hope more vegan establishments around the UK take the lead from this Northern business. These considered approaches to running an inclusive diner will hopefully give lots of people food for thought.

Yay for V Rev Vegan Diner and yay for inclusive approaches to vegan business!

Extra note: The V Rev Vegan Diner refurbishment has not been drama free and the team has faced a lot of emotional and financial set backs. If you would like to show your support for them, please buy one of these sassy vegan hot dog pins from them online. It’s a cute and rad way to lend your support to a business that is trying to do the best they can for animals and people in their local community.

Hackney vegan

London, don’t go getting getting delusions of grandeur and start thinking you are some sort of vegan capital now.

Latest plant-based news to reach my fat ears involves a pop up catering company switching from selling fish and dairy to trading in vegan food only. How fab!

Pesky’s are currently serving up delicious vegan diner-style comfort food at super trendy The Yard theatre in Hackney Wick. Get along until December 10, 2016 to taste their newly vegan menu.

Pesky’s themselves told me their favourite dish is the ‘buffalo cauliflower tacos’. They also do the buffalo cauliflower ‘flyers’ as a side, which are a vegan equivalent to buffalo chicken wings. Other sides include vegan mac ’n’ cheeze bites with sriracha, as well as triple cooked chips with a special salt blend.

What?! Triple cooked chips with a special salt blend? HOLY SHIT I NEED THAT IN MY LIFE.

Their signature dish is the original ‘Argy Bhaji Burger’ which is a large spiced bhaji burger with mango and chilli salsa.

If you can’t get along before Pesky’s shut up shop on December 10, don’t fret.

The now-forever-vegan food business has been invited back to The Yard to set up PERMANENTLY from February 2017.

Yep, London you are set to have another full time vegan food trader. Click here to see where The Yard is located.

Celebrate this news by buying food from Pesky’s and following them on Instagram.

Vegan in Belfast

I don’t know a lot about Belfast.

I’ve never been to Northern Ireland and I certainly haven’t read anything about vegan food availability or plant-based businesses.

So it was with great delight that I found out about That Vegan Café, an eatery serving up delicious looking food just south of the city centre. See the location on Google Maps.

Take a quick look at this recent Facebook post.

You should keep track of what is happening food and event wise via the café Facebook page.

What else do I need to know about when it comes to veganism in Belfast and Northern Ireland?

In the meantime…. yay for Belfast!

A short while ago I wrote about Paradise Unbakery opening permanent premises in Kensal Rise.

Rabbit in Exeter

This is beyond fabulous.

The UK city of Exeter has just gone and gotten itself what I believe to be its very first vegan café. Is that right? Is this the first?

Not only is Rabbit the first fully vegan place to eat, is has the cutest logo I have seen in a long while.

14445972_1800831303535511_5487805275459712717_n

I’ve been watching the food roll out of Rabbit for a few weeks on social media and everything looks exquisite.

The café is serving up mouthwatering cakes, toasted sandwiches, cheeseburgers, sundaes and more. And from the amount of furry friends I’m seeing in photos, the place must be completely dog-friendly too.

You had best believe I absolutely want this breakfast muffin!

Doesn’t it look scrumptious?!

What about this?

Get over to the Rabbit Instagram account to keep track of all the deliciousness they are serving and like their Facebook page. You can eat with them from Tuesday until Saturday each week, between 10am and 4pm.

Extra note: this café is run by the same fab people running Exeter’s vegan grocery store, Seasons. I wrote about that a while ago. Click here to read! The café is only a few hops away (get it?) from the store. See the location on Google Maps.

New vegan burger bar in London

If you are familiar with the vegan food scene in London, you will have already heard of Mooshies.

Mooshies has been serving up a selection of vegan burgers for a while, mostly popping up for temporary events and at shows such as the Viva! Roadhsow in Brighton.

Well, hold onto your felt fedoras because Mooshies now have a permanent burger bar location on Brick Lane!

dsc_0077

How great is this news?!

The hours for Mooshies are:

  • Mondays – Closed with rotating ticketed events and film screenings
  • Tuesdays – 12pm – 10pm
  • Wednesday 12pm – 10pm
  • Thursday 12pm – 11pm
  • Friday 12pm – 12am
  • Saturdays 12pm – 12am
  • Sunday 11am – 10pm

You need to remember that the kitchen closes 30 minutes before the advertised closing time.

The café also sells vegan beer from the Moncada Brewery Notting Hill range and Dalston’s hand mashed soft drinks. I’m not sure why, but there is also a fully stocked bar on premises that is not fully vegan. Mooshies owners tell me they are working on this.

Click here to see where the new Mooshies burger café is located and be sure to follow them on Instagram.

2 million

This post is kinda a chance to come up for air.

When I checked in on my blog statistics this morning, I noticed the all-time viewer count had passed the two million mark.

I know that number is not huge when some popular blogs are pulling those sorts of numbers in every month but for my little old blog, with just me behind the wheel, two million feels like a big milestone.

I started this blog almost six years ago as a way to keep self-publishing following the collapse of MySpace and as a platform on which to inspire people to go and/or stay vegan.

I was really inspired by the superstar blogs of the day such as Quarrygirl, Super Vegan and Vegansaurus. I wanted my blog to be fun, accessible and full of a very distinct voice.

The decision to launch my own blog has taken me on some unexpected paths.

I used the initial popularity of Fat Gay Vegan to help start the monthly London Vegan Potluck, a social event where people shared food and got to know each other. This event was much-loved and ran for four years and helped me develop another monthly party in the form of London Vegan Drinks.

The huge popularity of these events coupled with the demands of my blog forced me to step away from my job as a school teacher.

It was at this moment where I had to make Fat Gay Vegan pay.

Flash forward and you’ll now find me working alongside vegan brands, hosting vegan beer events, freelance writing, publicising vegan river cruises, and advising people on social and business matters.

I’m not sure how long this blog will continue, but the decision to start documenting my food and views on veganism almost six years ago has definitely been life defining.

Thanks for being part of this journey, thanks for improving outcomes for animals and thanks for contributing to that huge milestone of two million views.

Dead animals are not art

Lie down with roadkill, wake up with fleas.

It will be interesting to see how The Vegan Society responds to this situation.

BrewDog is expanding rapidly and part of that expansion involves raising equity in the USA. Long story short, the company’s equity scheme likes to reward investors with rewards such as discounts at their bars and so on. They had also promised a very special money-can’t-buy gift for their top investors in the USA.

Fast forward to today and the company posted details of the special reward on social media platforms as well as its website.

I’m going to leave a bit of space before I post the photo as a buffer zone for anyone who would like to check out now before they are faced with a dead animal.

Do not scroll down if you don’t want to see dead animals.

dead-drink

Yep. The special reward for top investors is a limited beer housed inside an animal corpse.

The company explains on its website that roadkill has been used. Listen, I’m not here to debate if this is ethical or even in good taste. I know some people think animals should not be glorified as decorations or trophies and I also know some people are fucking horrendous pieces of shit who can fuck off.

You know which side of the line you fall.

Now, the real reason for this blog post is to ask The Vegan Society to rapidly and loudly remove themselves from any association with BrewDog.

The beer company recently started using the trademark of The Vegan Society on all of its vegan-suitable bottles.

Surely The Vegan Society is not interested in taking money from, or promoting, a company that uses the bodies of dead animals as a marketing gimmick?

I think we are all looking for swift action here.

Also, that’s me done being one of the most vocal supporters of BrewDog. I’m out.

You can see the original tweet here.

You can read about the special gift online.
