The Dairy-Free Revolution Is Here

Do you remember when asking for oat milk in your coffee felt like a radical act? When choosing a plant-based alternative meant you were either looked at sideways or charged an extra fifty pence for the inconvenience?

Well, things have changed and I’m so happy to see it.

Read more below.

It’s hard to walk down a high street these days without stumbling across a coffee shop proudly pouring oat, soya, almond or coconut milk. Some are even cutting out dairy completely and embracing a 100 percent plant-based model.

This is huge. Monumental. It wasn’t that long ago that café owners would talk of their fears about losing customers if they dared drop dairy from the menu. Now? Now they’re leading the charge and doing it with confidence.

This shift doesn’t just represent a change in consumer habits. It’s a bold statement about compassion, sustainability and common sense. Let’s be honest. Dairy isn’t just a harmless splash in your latte. It comes from a system that relies on repeated forced pregnancies, the removal of calves from their mothers and an eventual, early death for animals whose bodies have been pushed to their limits. That’s the reality. Choosing plant milk isn’t just on trend. It’s kinder.

I want to give a massive shout out to every café and coffee shop that has ditched dairy. You’re helping shape a future where kindness is part of the business model. And to any owners still on the fence, trust me when I say it isn’t as scary as it used to be. The public is ready. The planet needs it. And the animals deserve it.

Let’s celebrate this momentum. Drop the name or link of your favourite fully vegan coffee shop in the comments. Let’s shine a spotlight on the places brewing a better world, one cup at a time.

Extra for non-animal milk?

I’m looking for reader input with this blog post.

The following information was sent to me by Isabel, a reader based in Leeds who is a bit annoyed that her local café charges her 30p extra for soya milk in her coffee.

Check out Isabel’s gripe below:

I know you’re quite familiar with Leeds and you may know the ‘Opposite’ cafes – there is one Opposite the University steps and another in the Victoria Quarter nowadays. I went to the Uni branch for a coffee this morning and asked whether soya milk was available. I was told yes, but when I paid was told there is a 30p surcharge. I have had a conversation with the manager about this. He says that the soya product they use (which is Bonsoy) is over three times as expensive as the organic cow milk they use, so they have to charge extra. I would have thought that having vegans and dairy-free people as customers would outweigh this, but apparently not! It makes me so sad to feel I’m being charged extra for being compassionate, and especially as they sell vegan flapjack and cake, this should be one place which takes a small financial hit in order to embrace vegans as customers.

Thanks for the input, Isabel. If you live in Leeds and would like to join the discussion with Opposites, have a word on Twitter.

And now to ask for your input.

If you have a local coffee shop that does NOT charge extra for plant-based milks, we all wanna know about it. Post names and links below so we can build up a list of affordable coffee vendors.

I would also be keen to hear from business owners who have found a way to make it financially viable to not charge extra for soya, rice, almond and/or coconut milks.

Plant milk

My partner Josh just posted this photo from his workplace that highlights the explosion in popularity of plant-based milks.

10402775_10152588904638751_8087180804920234631_nJosh took this photo in his staff kitchen this morning and I thought it was fabulous. I really wanted it to share it with you all.

I see the photo as a signpost for how far we have come in our struggle to educate people about dairy alternatives and in turn, help improve outcomes for animals.

This is just one small staff office in one part of London. Imagine the huge number of milk drinkers who have switched to plant-based milks over the last few years all over the UK. It is overwhelming to think of the positive impact this is having as it lessens the demand for cruel dairy.

Let’s celebrate plant-based milks!

If you have people in your workplace considering ditching dairy, share this link with them. It is an excellent resource site created by Viva! Campaigns to assist people in removing dairy milk from their diet.
