Food security heroes Made In Hackney are finally dropping their first-ever cookbook, and it’s an absolute must-have.


We Cook Plants is more than just a recipe book. It’s a love letter to plant-based cooking, packed with 100 global recipes from the incredible Made In Hackney chefs curated by the charity’s founder, Sarah Bentley. And if that wasn’t exciting enough, the book features contributions from celebrity supporters like Andi Oliver, Sami Tamimi, Dr Rupy, and fermentation king Sandor Katz. Fancy, right?

Learn To Cook And Contribute To Society

If you sniff around these parts of the Internet often, you’ll undoubtedly be aware that I work with food security charity Made In Hackney.

Made In Hackney does a lot of work around food security, education, and access however it most well-known in London for the free community cooking classes hosted inside our Clapton Common kitchen.

These classes are designed to help empower the community to eat nutritious and delicious cuisine that is culturally relevant. Often the classes will have a wellbeing focus such as ‘cooking to combat diabetes’ or low cost recipes for people struggling with the cost of living.

These classes are open to anyone and are not income tested. Check out the image below to see some of the upcoming community classes.

Raising money for vegan community kitchen

Made in Hackney is a legendary vegan kitchen dedicated to feeding vulnerable and at-risk Londoners.

If you don’t know about their amazing cooking classes and community outreach, click here to read all about them.

The biggest news for the charity is the fundraising campaign just about to come to a close. How much money does Made in Hackney need to raise for 2022?

£150,000 and they are about 70% of the way to the target.

This money will help Made in Hackney make delicious and nutritious meals, as well as deliver them to households around Hackney.

To help raise awareness of the fundraising campaign, I am having a chat with Made in Hackney founder Sarah Bentley on Tuesday December 28, 2021 at 6:30pm.

Join wild food enthusiast, Ken Greenway, for a foraging experience at the amazing award-winning Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park, one of London’s Magnificent Seven Victorian Cemeteries. Closed to burials since 1966 and a designated public park and Local Nature Reserve, the park has an extraordinary diversity of both woodland and meadow plants.

The event will include:

  • A guided walk to safely identify wild foods and enjoy samples of the plants along the way
  • Tips on where and how to forage
  • Learning to identify edible plants
  • Take samples home to turn into your own wild creations
  • Information on the health benefits of wild foods
  • Opportunity to ask Ken questions
  • Digital foraging info recommended by the park supplied after the walk 
  • Numbers limited to 15 with Covid-19 safety guidelines in place


Ken Greenway is site manager of THCP and is also an accredited Humanist celebrant, Horticulture Manager for Grounded Ecotherapy and the course leader on Forage London’s event ‘Wild Food, Wild Nature’. Ken studied Environmental Biology at the University of Greenwich and has worked at THCP since 2002 where he has developed his intimate knowledge of the site as well as his passion for wild food and foraging. Ken is also a Come Dine with Me winner!

Raise funds for this crucial London kitchen

October 16th is World Food Day – and what better date for Made In Hackney, an award winning eco-community kitchen and cookery school to launch a crowdfunding campaign to raise £45,000 – with a stretch target of £85,000. Since opening in 2012 the small but dynamic organisation has helped over 6000 Londoners lead healthier, happier more environmentally sustainable lives. They have achieved this by offering healthy eating focused cookery and food growing classes to groups in need including young people leaving care, low income families, people with long term health problems, recovering addicts and people with learning difficulties.

The team behind Made in Hackney have launched a campaign on Crowdfunder.co.uk to raise £45,000 to secure the organisations future and ensure they can help more people, in more parts of London to take part in their life changing programme.

The project and the team’s approach has been praised in high profile media such as Jamie, Vogue, The Observer, Vegetarian Living and Vegan Trade Journal. And that’s where it gets really interesting. The cookery school has a local, seasonal, organic (when possible), 100% plant-based food policy. Radical stuff.

Sarah Bentley, the kitchen’s founder says, “We teach people how to cook and eat food that is not just good for their health – but also the health of the planet. Everyone knows we need to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables and less processed foods, sugar and meat – but most people don’t know where to start. Many don’t even know how to cook from scratch at all and especially how to prepare vegetables in an exciting, tasty way. That’s where we come in.”

The project has taken their programme into schools, children’s centres, youth centres and pensioners clubs across the capital and worked with a number of national and local organisations such as Action For Children, Off Centre, Age UK, Deaf Plus, East London Vision, the Salvation Army, the Women’s Environment Network and Public Health Hackney.

According to their 2016 impact statistics they’re programme really brings about meaningful change. After completing the Made In Hackney programme 90% of participants said they felt more confident cooking from scratch using fresh ingredients and healthy cookery techniques; 90% said they now ate more fresh fruits and vegetables; and all participants felt inspired and had the necessary skills and recipes to eat less meat.

With spiralling levels of lifestyle related diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity – local programmes such as this are essential to prevent and in some cases cure, a plethora of chronic illnesses.

Rupy Aujla, author of Doctors Kitchen food blog, practising GP and volunteer for Made In Hackney says. “Made In Hackney is the blueprint for how we should be tackling and preventing a wide range of illnesses largely brought on by poor diet. They do fantastic work and have made a huge difference to thousands of people’s lives. It’s essential we secure their future. Donate to them today.”

It gives you a lot of information about Made in Hackney but I wanted to add some of my own words to this post.

The work carried out by Made in Hackney is crucial. Not just warm and fuzzy, but crucial. They are doing incredible outreach in one of the most polarised locations in the UK when it comes to wealth disparity and access to nutritious food options.

The people they are helping are marginalised and placed in situations where they do not have equitable access to quality food.

They are supporting at-risk members of their community and they are doing it only with plant-derived ingredients.

I truly appreciate the work carried out by Made in Hackney. The food justice charity is all about bringing vegan food knowledge, availability and expertise to people in low income, at risk and hard to reach situations.

If you haven’t heard about the project before, you need to get to their website to read about their outstanding work and book yourself in to one of their cooking classes. The money you pay will help Made in Hackney carry on with their vital support work.

If I have sold you on how fab they are, maybe you would also consider working with the group. There are currently two positions looking to be filled with Made in Hackney.

Here are the brief job descriptions lifted from the website.

1) Project Manager – Programmes

£28,000 pro rota – 28 hours/week (4 days)

This is an exciting role leading the key projects and operations at Made in Hackney. The successful candidate will work directly with two other Project Managers, a Project Coordinator (Public Health) a Finance Manager, a Venue Manager, freelance cookery teachers, apprentices and a large network of volunteers whom deliver Made In Hackney’s varied programme of cookery classes.

The ideal candidate will have experience working in a cross section of the social enterprise, charity and/or public sectors, as well as education and/or community health. They will be an experienced project manager, skilled at multi-tasking and will feel as comfortable presenting to a panel of Public Health professionals as getting stuck in with clearing out the compost bin or solving an IT problem. A detailed understanding of, and passion for the health and environmental issues underpinning Made In Hackney’s food policy (local, seasonal, organic, planet based) and mission is essential. Experience/knowledge of food growing and environmental issues preferred.

The experience of working at Made in Hackney is varied, unique and very rewarding.  There is no ‘typical’ day and we are looking for someone who is flexible to work out of the normal office working hours (for example at weekend market stalls etc.) There is plenty of room for the successful candidate to be creative and bring new ideas for developing existing programmes and activities.

2) Newly created vacancy for a Venue Manager 

£24,000 pro rota – 7 hours/week (1 day)

This is a newly created role responsible for organising the day to day kitchen venue and office space at Made in Hackney in Stoke Newington. The ideal candidate will have experience managing a community venue, project or kitchen, (eg. nursery, restaurant) taking client bookings and working in education and/or community health. They will be experienced project managers, skilled at multi-tasking and will feel as comfortable meeting potential new kitchen hire clients as getting stuck in with clearing out the compost bin or solving an IT problem.

City growing

If you are not planning on attending London Vegan Festival on Sunday August 17th, 2014  I can only assume you will be learning to be an inner city organic food grower over in Hackney.

Made In Hackney is putting on a wonderful crash course on urban organic growing. The following is taken from the event description:

Interested in growing your own organic food in the city but not sure where to start? Got a patio, window sill, balcony or garden and want to start growing food in it? Then this community class is for you!

In this two hour session MIH founder Sarah Bentley will teach you the basics of growing – you’ll even leave with a herb plant to get you started!

The two hour class commences at 1pm and takes place on a patchwork farm in Hackney. The cost to attend is left up to attendees with a minimum suggestion of £5, which is incredibly decent value for a two hour class in London.
