Here is some sad news for vegan London and some happy news for vegan London.

The gorgeous pop up cafe LOTUS Cucina Vegan is set to close on Portobello Road this weekend. Marta, the person behind the gorgeous vegan snacks at LOTUS, is packing up and moving on to other adventures.

That’s the sad news out of the way. Want the happy news?

As a thank you to her loyal customers, Marta is celebrating her final weekend on Portobello Road by offering delicious vegan hot dogs for just £2.50 and cups of fruity açaí sorbet for £2.50. That’s a whole lot of tasty plant-based eating for just a fiver.

Get along to 297 Portobello Road (just a 4 minute walk from Ladbroke Grove Underground station) this Saturday and Sunday for inexpensive vegan food and say farewell to Marta.

If you see me down there, please don’t disturb. I will be busy eating my way through multiple vegan hot dogs.

The revolution will be veganised

I think I am living in the wrong city.

I want vegan junk food. I want vegan comfort food. I want the food to be tasty. I want the food to have flair. I want to eat the food in a super cool setting. I want cake options. I want drinks like shakes and floats.

I got exactly what I wanted in Manchester.

V Revolution is the type of food provider the UK has been screaming out for and of which vegan Londoners are surely gravely jealous. Of course the food is incredible or I wouldn’t be considering moving back to Manchester, but I’ll get to that with photos shortly. Let’s first talk about the fucking coolness of the shop.

Mighty goodbye

It hasn’t even been a year since I first blogged about the glorious vegan food vendor The Mighty Fork so it is with great sadness and shock to find out that the people behind it have no future plans to trade.

London has lost one of its only world class, 100% vegan food providers. The Mighty Fork were a shining light in a slate grey Victorian  sky filled with hummus and falafel. Their gourmet dogs were loved by many and the capital is a decidedly less adventurous food landscape without them.

Owner and founder Rita sent the following tweet this morning to her devoted fans via Twitter.

I followed this tweet up with an email to Rita, asking if this really is the end of her vegan hot dogs on the streets of London.

She replied that there are no plans for The Mighty Fork in the future and she has no plans to return to street food. Rita also stated it was important to her to get word out to the people who have supported her business. She loved meeting the thousands of people she served vegan street food to and is thankful for all the new friends she made along the way.

It turns out that the final outing for The Mighty Fork was the roller disco I held to raise funds for Sea Shepherd. I’m glad I had the good sense to eat two of their delicious creations on the day.

Get ready to be happy

Hey. You. Yes, you.

You sitting comfortably in your front room, eating baked beans on toast or a bag of salted crisps and feeling quite smug with yourself. You might be a fussy vegan but there you are eating tasty treats normally assigned to ‘the normals’ of the world. You can eat whatever you like because there are vegan options for most things now. You are such an accomplished eater and you don’t even have to think about it anymore. It’s so easy, right?

Well, hold onto your hemp hats. I make no apologies for blowing your tiny, vegan world apart with this next announcement.

Comfortably-numb plant eaters of the UK, I give you The Mighty Fork. Eating just became interesting again.

I pick up my friends and we start to ride

My recent trip to Paris was a vegan eye-opener. I hadn’t been to the French capital for almost a decade and I didn’t hold many fond memories of plant-based food availability.

Things have changed, people.

I am delighted to report that the Paris vegan scene has exploded. You can choose from Asian cuisine, a vegan grocery store and baked goods. There are even a smattering of health food supermarkets through the city selling a decent range of vegan products.

Out of this new surge of animal-free options, one of the best places to emerge is a cute fast food joint called East Side Burgers. Burgers, hot dogs, fries and soda are just the tip of the food pile. The cosy outlet serves up a whole manner of savoury delights such as quiche by the slice as well as sweet treats (including my favourite chocolate on the planet, Moo Free).

Of course I am disappointed the place isn’t completely vegan. Actually, I can’t get my head around why it isn’t. I can only hope that is a goal they are moving towards because apart from the animal products served, East Side Burgers is one fabulous place to eat vegan.
