Vegan food stand accident

Scary news out of Croydon.

The traders running vegan street food market Veg Instead had an extremely fortunate escape from serious injury today when a car crashed into their business.

Screen grab from London Evening Standard report

According to London Evening Standard:

An unmarked police car crashed into a south London market stall amid a police chase following an armed robbery this morning.

The black Citroen hit a stallholder and then smashed through a vegan food stand at Surrey Street Market in Croydon just after 9.10am.

You can read the full story here.

As soon as I found out about this accident (thanks Oliver for the tip), I phoned stall owner Greg to check if everyone working this morning was OK. He assured me all was fine as far as physical wellbeing goes, however most of the Veg Instead equipment was destroyed.

This is where the vegan community comes in to help fix this situation.

I have set up a Just Giving page to raise the funds to replace the destroyed equipment. Greg estimates the damage at around £500.

We have the collective power to get Veg Instead back on the road instantly. Insurance claims can take weeks and every day they wait to reopen, Veg Instead are losing income and Croydon is without a vegan food option on its streets.

All we need is 500 people to give £1 and I know more than 500 people will read this story. We can and should use our vegan might to sort this out.

Donate now.

Airline food with Delta

The most-read category on this blog is Food in the air. This is where I post stories of the good, the bad and the ugly of vegan airline meals.

A reader named Alex reached out today to let me know about the vegan meal options served to him between the UK and the USA on Delta Airlines.

Read about the experience below. Thanks for filling us in, Alex!

Hometown

Did you all know that I am from Australia?

I grew up in a city called Brisbane. Actually, I spent my younger years in a seaside town called Redcliffe just north of Brisbane and later moved to the Queensland capital as a teenager.

Where you grow up always holds a unique place in your memories, so it was exciting to hear I had been mentioned in my hometown newspaper in connection to my blogging and event planning in the UK.

Cheese spreads even further

I recently asked the question “Is Violife the best melting cheese in the UK?” and many people replied in the affirmative.

However, some readers asked a question of their own. They wanted to know where in the country they could buy this vegan cheese.

Well, I’m happy to report I have an update on where you can pick up this plant-based favourite.

A super considerate reader named Jon reached out to me today to let me know he found the Violife brand in an Asda store. This vegan cheese is spreading across the UK faster than I can handle!

Check out Jon’s haul of the good stuff in his shopping trolley.

Sad news

Josh and I are currently in San Diego visiting friends and dropping in on some of our favourite eateries.

We took a drive yesterday to one of the best (the best?) vegan fast food outlets on the planet, only to find a strange scene playing out in the parking lot.

As we pulled up to Evolution, we noticed a swarm of work trucks in the lot and people hurrying about cleaning and washing equipment. My heart sank as it looked as though my favourite place to eat in San Diego had closed down.

The truth is even more upsetting.

We’re on the telly

My inbox just blew up big time.

Every single person in the UK is desperate to let me know that my fab monthly party, Queer Vegan Disco, was mentioned on a Channel 4 program tonight. The Night Bus is a fly-on-the-wall docu-series that showcases the people of London as they attempt to get home on the night bus network in the early hours following the closure of the Underground trains.

Tonight featured the number 29 from Wood Green which means the wonderful Michelle and Mat were featured moments after leaving Queer Vegan Disco.
