Vegan taco night in Hackney

Black Cat Hackney and Huitzmil present Tacos Against Borders, a benefit for Akwaaba.

Akwaaba is a Hackney-based social centre for migrants. They offer a space for rest, play, learning and mutual support. Akwaaba is for all migrants regardless of immigration status, ‘race’, religion, country of origin, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and (dis)ability.

Akwaaba doesn’t currently have a venue and they are putting all their efforts towards securing one, so you can support them by attending this event (and letting them know about a spare venue if you know of one!). They need space every Sunday so a school hall in the Hackney area would be perfect.

Now… onto news of the event taking place inside Black Cat Hackney this Sunday December 5, 2021 at 6:00PM.

Talks and activities

  • Huitzmil speaking about how he crossed from Mexico to USA and the challenges he faced
  • Andres Posada from Colombia speaking about how he arrived to the UK and the challenges he faced as a migrant
  • Mini market
  • Acoustic set by Hugh Vivian from the anarcho punk band Omega Tribe

Menu

  • Marinated lamb style seitan , vegetable escabeche, pineapple, tomatillo salsa , avocado
  • Drunken fish pieces cooked in tequila , chilli and coriander , vegetable escabeche and charred salsa.
  • Beer battered Oyster mushrooms , guacamole, escabeche
  • Nachos :Freshly fried corn tortillas, spicy smokey beans , jalapeños, shitake bacon and cheese sauce

Everything served on corn tortillas or house made flour tortillas.

And of course you can follow Black Cat Cafe on Instagram.

Extra note: if you cannot attend this event in support of Akwaaba but would like to donate to help the important work they do, please donate via their website.

Temple of Seitan new vegan chicken

If you hang around these parts of the Internet often, you will probably know that I have been doing some work with legendary vegan fast food business Temple of Seitan.

I really couldn’t have picked a better time to be aligned with the London eatery as they have just released a brand new version of their vegan chicken and it is truly sensational.

You will be blown away by this stuff.

You might be thinking that there was no room for improvement when it came to the Temple of Seitan chicken, but they have somehow managed to take it a few levels higher.

Rebecca has been working on this new recipe for a long time and has been unstoppable in her determination to create the best vegan chicken on the planet.

She has succedded.

The new recipe uses significantly less wheat gluten than the original recipe, making it lighter and more chicken-like. The pieces actually tear like chicken and the texture and taste are both incredible. So succulent.

I also find that because it is lighter, I am able to eat more of the stuff. I love that!

You gotta get along to one of the Temple of Seitan locations ASAP to get your paws on the new recipe chicken. All their locations and opening hours can be found on their website.

You can also follow Temple of Seitan on Instagram.

Female focused vegan restaurant

Do you wanna support independent women in business and eat delicious vegan food?

You need all this news!

Lady Lane Catering Co and The Canvas are proud to bring you Lady Lane Kitchen: a veritable pop-up feast running until the end of 2021. The kitchen is taking over The Canvas Cafe five nights a week, and is is all about sharing cultures, empowering women, sustainable lifestyles, and great food.

The cooperative brings together six women from all different backgrounds who tell a story of their love, their lives, and their dreams through their food. Launched in October, feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and the pop up kitchen is set to stay for the rest of the year.

They are now going to be running Tuesday-Saturday from 6pm, and in December will shake up the menu to offer a selection of dishes called ‘What we eat at Christmas’.

These women set up Lady Lane Catering Co in 2020 and they haven’t even let a pandemic stop them. They have persevered and have made it to this stand out London pop up, even as other hospitality businesses are struggling. It’s not been easy. Childcare, budgeting, and schedules could get in the way of a thriving business, but these women are excelling.

The strong women are coming together through a love of food, a fierce drive to succeed, and a vision to bring their family and heritage recipes to more people.

Flavour and passion abound in a menu featuring Caribbean, South Asian, Persian, Mediterranean and Somalian food from a group of single mums and super women.

Leila is a single mother who has created a Caribbean menu in her kitchen and is quick to point out the parallels between cultures; “Pilau rice is used in Caribbean cooking too – food shows us that we’re not so different after all!” Leila runs Munchbreaks, an eclectic multicultural catering service from the heart of East London (a bit like the person behind it). She says that it’s about community and caring for them.

Woin Ethiopic Kitchen is passionate about making traditional Ethiopic food 100% vegan and has created her business to create high quality, plant based menus, full of rich flavours.

Aseel’s Kitchen was started 5 years ago by Sophia, a mother of four lovely children. Providing for her family and friends great quality and scrumptious food has always been a point of great joy and pride and she specialises in providing great flavoursome dishes from the southern Mediterranean, Levant and Arabian Peninsula kitchens. She says that “cooking isn’t just about serving food, but sharing your story” and hopes to do jus that through her tasty menu.

Dadu’s Kitchen LDN opened in 2019 as a way of spreading love and joy through full bellies! Syeda, a mother of 6, and a grandmother, has had over 40 years of experience cooking a wide range of Bangladeshi foods, using aromatic spices from the south of Asia. Her passion is to extend the joy and love for her food beyond her family and friends, with a vegan twist! She says that “cooking isn’t just about serving food, but sharing your story” and hopes to do jus that through her tasty menu.

Amiira started making her own hot sauce Basbaas (which means chilli) after she lost her job in 2017. She noticed there was a gap in the market for Somali foods and condiments, and decided to use this downtime to launch her own business, as it had always been a dream of hers.

Ruth Rogers, founder and owner of The Canvas says: “The pop up was originally planned to run for a month, but we’ve seen just how transformative it has been. From customers saying they never realised vegan food could be inspired by cultures around the world, to the growth in confidence the women have found, we’re delighted they’re staying around a bit longer.”

Lady Lane Kitchen is a cooperative of women in partnership with business and government:

● Tower Hamlets Council

● The Canvas – East London Profit for Purpose Cafe hosting the pop up

● Heura Foods – proactive vegan meat brand who are donating products for the ladies’ menus

● Lady Lane Market – London’s first women-led market, in east London

New vegan cafe for South Ealing

West London often gets overlooked when it comes to the vegan revolution, but South Ealing (about halfway between Central London and Heathrow) has just joined the plant based eating map thanks to a new cafe.

Revival Café is the latest project from one half of the original Picky Wops team, Andrea Moro.

Andrea has teamed up with his buddies to bring a desperately needed vegan spot to South Ealing Road. Revival is everything a classic café should be about. Visitors can sample specialty coffee, freshly-baked focaccia, succulent cakes, and tempting pastries.

It marks the first vegan eatery in the area since Vegan HQ closed down. What a great spot that was!

But we are talking about Revival, so take a look at this glorious food.

You can see the exact location of Revival thanks to Google Maps. If you know the area, it is opposite Wickes and the Co-operative. You can visit easily by taking the Piccadilly Line to South Ealing. The 65 bus also runs straight past Revival’s front door.

You can also follow Revival on Instagram.

Help a vegan cheese company recover

Vegans, we need to band together.

I AM NUT OK is a superstar vegan cheese company and they need our help.

Check out what the brand said about the vandalism of their kitchen:

Hello! We are an independent vegan cheese company based in London called I AM NUT OK. Many of you who know our brand also know us (Nivi and Angela) and our story, but we are guessing some of you are new to us and our products!

We started as a couple making vegan cheeses and spreads at home, and when we outgrew our home kitchen, we moved to a small commercial kitchen. Recently, we decided to take a bigger step to scale up our business and found the perfect space.

After spending all our savings on securing the new space and building plans, we finally started building our dream kitchen. A few weeks back, when we went to go and check on the space, we entered the building to find the door had been forced open, breaking the locks and shutters. Upon entry, we were met with a totally vandalised space – every surface has been graffitied, trash was left everywhere, and the construction we’d been undergoing had been completely destroyed. Every entrance point was broken, the cables to operate the shutters had been cut, our new break room kitchen destroyed, bathroom trashed, and there was even vomit and human excrement…

This setback has not only cost us to have to replace, repaint, and clean everything, but it has also unfortunately delayed our building plans, costing us thousands in rent which the landlord will not cover. We are honestly in shock, and we have been unsure what to do, as we really do not like the idea of asking for money, so if you would like to support our business by purchasing from the online shop instead, that would also mean a lot to us! Any donations over £150 (UK only), we will send you a thank you cheese hamper for supporting us. We are grateful for anything, even sharing with those that might be able to help.

To all our customers, thank you so much for supporting our business all these years to help us get it to where it is now, and we are so excited for the new kitchen to be completed and share our journey with you – setbacks, victories, and all!

This is a tough situation that would break a lot of us, but Angela and Nivi are determined to rebuild.

Click here to donate if you can afford to give and be sure to take them up on their hamper offer if you are feeling flush with cash. I AM NUT OK make some of the finest vegan cheeses on the planet!

Buy vegan cheese and cakes in Camden

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I am involved with rolling out a new vegan market in central London and I’ve now got some news for you.

Tasty news!

Vegan Makers at Buck Street Market is starting small (sigh… COVID is making everything so tough) but the three traders we have lined up for you this week are top shelf.

Vegan Makers at Buck Street is a 4-day a week collection of traders located in the courtyard of Buck Street Market. You might have already seen this impressive complex made from shipping containers, just a few metres along Camden High Street from Camden Town Underground station. See the location thanks to Google Maps.

Our artisan market is starting small this week, but you can get along for some of the finest vegan products in the city. (Vegan Makers is on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday between 11am and 5pm)

What will you find this week?

Vegan Makers is now a permanent home for Honestly Tasty, the sensational vegan cheese company based in Wood Green.

Run by sister and brother team Beth and Mike, Honestly Tasty is quickly becoming the vegan cheese brand everyone is talking about. Mike trained in vegan cheesemaking in Berlin, so stop by their stall to talk about their interesting family story and to buy their game-changing cheeses.

You can also follow Honestly Tasty on Instagram.

You can’t have a Fat Gay Vegan market or trader get-together without Chanel and Cake Cult LDN.

In her previous incarnation as Vegan Delice, Chanel was the heart and soul of Hackney Downs Vegan Market. Her cakes, donuts, and tray bakes would bring people from all over London.

We expect Cake Cult LDN to be just as popular at Vegan Makers at Buck Street Market, especially with busy people on their lunch breaks.

Everything Chanel makes is delicious and I say that as an authoritative source, having eaten MANY items over the years.

You can also follow Cake Cult LDN on Instagram.

Have you been looking for vegan-friendly CBD oil?

Our third trader this week from Thursday until Sunday at Vegan Makers at Buck Street is Cosmic Oils.

Cosmic Oils specialise in high strength CBD oils and related products. Everything they do is homemade in London and of course it’s always vegan. You can also follow Cosmic Oils on Instagram.

Get along to from 11am this Thursday June 24, 2021. These traders will be in the courtyard of Buck Street Market Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday this week between 11am and 5pm.

You can follow Vegan Makers on Instagram for all the latest trader information each week.

If you need more reason to visit our traders (umm… vegan cheese and cake is not enough?), Buck Street Market is overflowing with vegan food options from their regular restaurants.

PRTZL is on the first floor and is home to 100% vegan burgers and hot dogs. Bad Vegan (on the top level but not 100% vegan hence the name I guess) is having their grand opening on Thursday June 24 and are even giving away free food. Magic Falafel is 100% vegan and they are also on the first floor. There are many other vegan options on site as well as just a few metres around the corner (Temple of Seitan and What The Pitta to name just two).

Buy cheese. Buy cake. Buy CBD oils. Support independent vegan traders.
