If you have been vegan for any length of time, you will probably understand the sadness of missing out on Yorkshire puddings. You can find yourself surrounded by roast potatoes, mountains of vegetables, gravy and all sorts of exciting plant-based centrepieces, yet there is one familiar feature missing from the plate.
For years, finding a genuinely good vegan Yorkshire pudding has been one of those frustrations that comes with being vegan. It seems almost absurd when you stop to think about it because Yorkshire puddings are not some mysterious food requiring a secret ingredient that can only be sourced from Emmerdale farm.
A traditional Yorkshire pudding is essentially a simple batter made from flour, eggs and milk, cooked in hot fat until it puffs up into a combination of crispy edges and soft, fluffy middle. Obviously, eggs and dairy are not vegan, but the basic idea can be recreated with plant-based ingredients.
And somehow us vegans have been taking our sweet time when it comes to making Yorkies a staple of our plant-based Sunday dinners.
But things have changed in London.

If you are in London and have been missing this essential Sunday roast experience, you need to know about the vegan carvery at Unity Diner.
Every Sunday, this legendary London vegan restaurant serves up a full plant-based version of the traditional carvery experience. For anyone unfamiliar with the concept, a carvery is the sort of roast dinner where you line up and choose from a selection of roast meats, vegetables, potatoes, stuffing, gravy, and all the trimmings.
Obviously, there is no meat involved at Unity Diner. Instead, you get a spectacular spread of vegan roast options, crispy potatoes, vegetables, gravy, and all the things that you’d normally expect from a Sunday roast.
And of course there are Yorkshire puddings.
For people who grew up in the UK (that’s not me!), I imagine there is something super nostalgic about eating a Yorkshire pudding. It is one of those foods that can transport you straight back to family get togethers and happy childhood meals.

Plenty of vegans probably accepted that Yorkshire puddings are just one of those things they will never eat again. But if you get yourself to Unity Diner on a Sunday you’ll experience a vegan carvery with Yorkshire puddings at the centre of the plates. Bring your non-vegan friends and show them what plant-based roast dinner can look like. Bring your vegan friends who have been Yorkshire pudding deprived for years.
Yorkshire puddings are for everyone. Vegans included.
