Vegan taco night in Hackney

Black Cat Hackney and Huitzmil present Tacos Against Borders, a benefit for Akwaaba.

Akwaaba is a Hackney-based social centre for migrants. They offer a space for rest, play, learning and mutual support. Akwaaba is for all migrants regardless of immigration status, ‘race’, religion, country of origin, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and (dis)ability.

Akwaaba doesn’t currently have a venue and they are putting all their efforts towards securing one, so you can support them by attending this event (and letting them know about a spare venue if you know of one!). They need space every Sunday so a school hall in the Hackney area would be perfect.

Now… onto news of the event taking place inside Black Cat Hackney this Sunday December 5, 2021 at 6:00PM.

Talks and activities

  • Huitzmil speaking about how he crossed from Mexico to USA and the challenges he faced
  • Andres Posada from Colombia speaking about how he arrived to the UK and the challenges he faced as a migrant
  • Mini market
  • Acoustic set by Hugh Vivian from the anarcho punk band Omega Tribe

Menu

  • Marinated lamb style seitan , vegetable escabeche, pineapple, tomatillo salsa , avocado
  • Drunken fish pieces cooked in tequila , chilli and coriander , vegetable escabeche and charred salsa.
  • Beer battered Oyster mushrooms , guacamole, escabeche

And of course you can follow Black Cat Cafe on Instagram.

Extra note: if you cannot attend this event in support of Akwaaba but would like to donate to help the important work they do, please donate via their website.

The prettiest vegan tacos on the planet

Mexico City is one of the most exciting vegan destinations on the planet and the relaunched La Pitahaya takes it to yet another level.

The gorgeous Mexican eatery has taken up a new home near the corner of Querétaro and Orizaba in the Roma Norte neighbourhood of the capital.

Every single item on the La Pitahaya menu is fresh and delicious.

La Pitahaya is known for the ridiculously pretty pink tortillas made in house and cooked fresh to order. They use these tortillas across a range of traditional dishes including enfrojiladas and tacos.

Check out the photos from my recent visit below, see the exact location of the restaurant online thanks to Google Maps, and follow La Pitahaya on Instagram.

Extra note: the non-vegan ice cream store next door to La Pitahaya offers several vegan flavours by the scoop. I enjoyed the coconut and chocolate ice creams following my meal.

Legendary Mexican eatery opens in USA

Fantastic vegan news out of Miami, Florida.

Already a success in Tulum, Mexico where Chef Charly first opened his food truck in the jungle on New Year’s Eve 2016, Charly’s Vegan Tacos has now arrived in Miami to revolutionise the vegan food scene.

“The first year we opened in Tulum, we lost a lot of money. We were about to close when high season arrived and people finally started to turn up from what must have been word of mouth. And now we are opening in Miami! It is a great feeling to to be taking what we call our ‘Hip Dining’ concept to Florida”, says restaurant founder Charly.

Charly applies his past experience as Executive Chef at some of the best steak houses in Mexico City to make vegetables taste and feel like authentic Mexican cuisine with very similar textures and flavours to that of meat.

“What’s amazing for us in Tulum is that about 80% of our customers are regular meat eaters. We are not here to judge as I used to love meat. When I started eating vegan what I missed the most was the feeling of eating animal protein. Now I’ve eaten vegan so long I don’t miss it, but these recipes helped me stay on track in the beginning. Charly’s Vegan Tacos is my best effort to bring this marriage of food types to everyone so we can all eat less meat without missing the textures and flavours we have grown to love so much”, Charly told me.

The Wynwood, Miami location evolved from the Tulum concept by creating a full service dining experience, with Starters (labelled as Antojitos on the menu), Tacos, Mains and Desserts. See the full Miami menu online here. It is amazing!

Charly’s Vegan Tacos is located on 172 NW 24th St, Wynwood, Miami. See the exact location thanks to Google Maps.

You can follow Charly’s Vegan Tacos on Instagram and Facebook. The Miami location is currently open Tuesday to Sunday from 5:30pm until late.

Vegan tacos in Mexico City

This is a super quick post to let you know about a wonderful vegan taco restaurant in Mexico City.

It is called Malportaco.

The tacos are cheap, the agua of the day is always splendid, and the people running the place are super friendly.

Pile your tacos high, help yourself to the salsas, and be sure to squeeze the lime wedges liberally.

¡Taco taco taco!

I was super-excited to read on the LA Times website that Los Angeles is getting a brand-new taquería, opened by none other than actor Danny Trejo and it appears to be very vegan-friendly! The LA Times article quotes Danny saying;

“Here, we wanted to include everybody, so we have a great vegan menu and gluten-free menu.”

Other online articles speculated that Trejo’s Tacos was 100% vegan but it has since been established that it is just vegan-friendly as they posted a picture of a chicken taco on their Instagram feed. Either way, I can’t wait to find out more during my next trip to LA!

As a side-note, FGV and I visited our first vegan taquería here in Mexico City last night… review and pics coming soon!

You can follow Trejo’s Tacos on Twitter and Instagram, or like the Facebook page.

Vegana en la ciudad

I included my favourite urban area on the planet in recent my top ten list of cities for vegans. I absolutely adore Mexico City, which is quickly becoming one of the hottest destinations for compassionate eaters.

I awoke this morning to a dreary London day, so the last thing I needed was a reminder of what I’m missing on the other side of the world.

Cue my pal, Kay.

Kay is currently working in Mexico City and making me extremely jealous with food photos, including shots of this vegan taquería called Por Siempre.

For anyone not familiar with Mexican street food, a taquería is a food stand serving tacos with freshly cooked fillings and sauces. I don’t think I could even hazard a guess as to how many taquerías there are in the Mexican capital.

Of course the overwhelming majority of taquerías in Mexico City serve mounds of horrendous meat, but Por Siempre is the glorious exception. It is a vegan taco stand!

Por Siempre is just one more reason why Mexico City is a must-visit destination for vegan travellers. Check out the photos sent by Kay and ‘like’ the vegan taco stand on Facebook.

It looks like it is doing a roaring trade!
