Gorgeous vegan eating in Mexico City

Vegan Inc. isn’t a new restaurant for me, or you if you follow me online.

This restaurant chain is completely vegan with two outlets in the northern Mexico city of Monterrey plus a third in the upscale Polanco neighbourhood of Mexico City.

The food is always gorgeous and my visit yesterday to the Polanco outlet left me even more impressed than usual.

Check out these shots below.

There is talk of another location opening soon somewhere in the capital, but I won’t be satisfied until Vegan Inc. is a global chain.

It deserves to be worldwide.

Julio

If you have been a reader (or Patreon supporter) around these parts for a while, you will know about my dear friend Julio.

Julio and I have been close friends ever since the first time we met in 2009. I love him dearly and couldn’t ask for a better friend. He is one of the reasons why I live part of each year in Mexico City.

Some of the rewards I had been sharing on Patreon (and on here) were cooking videos starring the two of us. Julio and I loved making them, mostly because we got to goof around together.

But sadly Julio became very unwell last year and our videos together came to a sudden end. I tried to carry on by myself for a while but it just wasn’t the same.

Thankfully, Julio is now feeling a lot better and this photo was taken of us last night. As you can tell, we had a marvellous time laughing and catching up.

I am really keen to get more videos made for you all as a sign of my appreciation for all the support you give me in keeping the Fat Gay Vegan show on the road.

Julio and I plan on getting creative again for you soon. Thanks for your patience and sorry for the delay on videos.

I’m sure you’ll agree that the most important thing is that my friend is happy and smiling again. Julio is one of the most important people in my life and I’m so thankful that I get these opportunities to share him with you.

You can see all of our videos together online here and you can pledge a small monthly amount via Patreon to help me keep putting my energies into being Fat Gay Vegan.

Vegan food in Mexico City

When I mention to people that I live in Mexico City part of each year, more often than not I am met by a comment about the city being tough for vegans.

That couldn’t be further from the truth.

To start with, many of the staples of Mexican cuisine are vegan suitable or easily veganised. Beans, corn, mushrooms, fruit, nuts, seeds, and so on.

On top of that, a huge number of vegan eateries have popped up creating fabulous vegan takes on traditional and common Mexican foods. There is food for vegans to eat all across the mega city.

I’ve been back in the Mexican capital for about a month now, so I wanted to take the time to share some food photos with you. Of course this doesn’t come close to representing everything I’ve eaten over the past few weeks, but it will give you something to sink your teeth into.

Provecho.

Make delicious champurrado

You can support the making of recipe videos such as this, plus all of the other outreach and vegan support work done by Fat Gay Vegan, by supporting on Patreon.

Making champurrado

Ingredients:

11⁄2 litres water
1 cinnamon stick
150g Mexican chocolate or any dark cooking chocolate 50g tortilla masa*
200g of piloncillo or another dark brown sugar

*If you can’t buy fresh tortilla masa, make it yourself using the recipe here.

Instructions:

  • Crush the piloncillo sugar and place it in a large saucepan
  • Add the chocolate, cinnamon stick and water
  • Bring to a simmer over a medium-high heat
  • While the mixture is coming to a simmer, combine the tortilla masa with a bit of water until well mixed
  • Add the masa mixture to the saucepan, using a sieve to filter out any lumps
  • Stir well and continue simmering for another 5-10 minutes while the mixture thickens, stirring occasionally

This is perfect for a chilly, rainy evening. For a creamier version, use a plant-based milk instead of water.

Waffle sandwich delight

Boring sandwiches are redundant.

Waffle sandwiches are the future!

My buddy Ricardo and I visited one of the best vegan eateries in Mexico City earlier today, Vegamo. This place is packed solid with delicious dishes and cool drinks. I just can’t get enough of it and the owner are the friendliest people you could hope to meet.

Today I decided to not do my usual trick of playing it safe. I have a habit of always getting the same thing, but I pushed myself to take a leap.

And I am beyond glad I did. Please pay due respect to these AMAZING waffle sandwiches that Ricardo and I scoffed down.

Yep. They tasted as fab as they look.

I know most of my readers aren’t heading to Mexico City anytime soon, but I wanted to share in the hope of spreading waffle sandwich hysteria far and wide. I wanna see homemade waffle sandwiches flooding social media.

Extra note: my sandwich was called Yoda and the waffle dough was coloured/flavoured with spinach. Divine. Ricardo went for the Chewbacca.

Extra extra note: Ricardo is the extremely talented designer of the Vegan Beer Fest UK posters/logos for last year and he is set to once again design them all in 2017. Yay for talent!

Is this the best new vegan eatery on the planet?

To be genuinely impressed by a new vegan eatery is a rare occurrence. Yes, I know many places do a good job of feeding us compassionate people and a good job is often just what you need. I’ll even return to a café that does a good job.

What I want to talk about here is when you dine with an establishment and they blow you away. The service is exceptional, the decor is gorgeous and everything you try from the menu is above average.

People of the Internet, please meet Elk Bistro of Mexico City.

Elk Bistro is a joint venture between super talented chef Veronica and the owners of vegan grocery store, VeganVille.

The bistro opened mere weeks ago in conjunction with the second location of VeganVille but you would be forgiven if you thought the eatery was a long time established. Every single part of what they do had been polished to perfection before they opened the doors to diners.

The central courtyard is immaculately renovated with a grand Canary Island date palm towering over proceedings. Cutlery and tableware is stylish, while the friendly people looking after you make you feel like nothing is too much trouble.

And now the food. I can’t do it more justice than the following photos.

Just dined in the most gorgeous #vegan bistro/deli in Mexico City called Elk. #cdmx

Every dish placed on my table at Elk Bistro has been exquisite.

Dining with Elk is made even more special by the fact that you have to walk through a 100% vegan grocery store to exit. Talk about exit through the gift shop!

VeganVille is stacked solid with vegan cheeses, meats, pantry items, personal care products and more. There is even a cute deli/takeaway food counter positioned at the front of the store. It is an extension of Elk and it is here where you can pick up gorgeous cream cakes and ham and cheese croissants before you depart.

If you have been considering a trip to Mexico City, Elk is the last piece of convincing you need.

100% vegan café in Mexico impresses

I’m currently living in one of the largest cities on the planet and getting from one part of Mexico City to another can take hours. Traffic, congestion, overcrowding and people everywhere means you often have to plan well ahead to get somewhere on time.

The size of the city can be daunting so imagine how fabulous it is having one of the best vegan eateries in the megalopolis less than a ten minute walk from my front door.

Temictli is a friendly café perched on the corner of two incredibly busy streets on the fringes of the trendy Condesa neighbourhood. They serve freshly cooked food ranging from beautifully dressed salads to handmade seitan hot dogs with all the trimmings.

The photos below show a selection of dishes I’ve gobbled up in the few weeks since I first got acquainted with Temictli and its wonderful owners Rosa Linda and Elizabeth.

Follow Temictli on Instagram for more mouthwatering photos and be sure to either dine with them or take advantage of their bike delivery service if you find yourself in Mexico City.
