Vegan food in Mexico City

When I mention to people that I live in Mexico City part of each year, more often than not I am met by a comment about the city being tough for vegans.

That couldn’t be further from the truth.

To start with, many of the staples of Mexican cuisine are vegan suitable or easily veganised. Beans, corn, mushrooms, fruit, nuts, seeds, and so on.

On top of that, a huge number of vegan eateries have popped up creating fabulous vegan takes on traditional and common Mexican foods. There is food for vegans to eat all across the mega city.

I’ve been back in the Mexican capital for about a month now, so I wanted to take the time to share some food photos with you. Of course this doesn’t come close to representing everything I’ve eaten over the past few weeks, but it will give you something to sink your teeth into.

Provecho.

Sold out vegan events

What does a sold out vegan pop up event look like?

Just like this.

This was the scene last night as we hosted the sold out 5pm sitting of the Mexico City Feast Night at Black Cat Hackney with special guest Mariana Blanco of Los Loosers.

Mariana fed the delighted guests some of the best vegan Mexican food London has ever seen.

And you know what? We had so much fun, we did it twice.

The 8pm sitting was another sold out event.

These sold out dinners were in addition to the Day of the Dead event hosted at 10 Cable Street and the Mexican Ramen Night taking place at Vegan HQ tomorrow.

Much love to everyone who has joined us for these special events.

Be sure to follow Los Loosers on Instagram to see what all the fuss is about and get to Mexico City if and when you can to eat with the much-loved foodies.

Waffle sandwich delight

Boring sandwiches are redundant.

Waffle sandwiches are the future!

My buddy Ricardo and I visited one of the best vegan eateries in Mexico City earlier today, Vegamo. This place is packed solid with delicious dishes and cool drinks. I just can’t get enough of it and the owner are the friendliest people you could hope to meet.

Today I decided to not do my usual trick of playing it safe. I have a habit of always getting the same thing, but I pushed myself to take a leap.

And I am beyond glad I did. Please pay due respect to these AMAZING waffle sandwiches that Ricardo and I scoffed down.

Yep. They tasted as fab as they look.

I know most of my readers aren’t heading to Mexico City anytime soon, but I wanted to share in the hope of spreading waffle sandwich hysteria far and wide. I wanna see homemade waffle sandwiches flooding social media.

Extra note: my sandwich was called Yoda and the waffle dough was coloured/flavoured with spinach. Divine. Ricardo went for the Chewbacca.

Extra extra note: Ricardo is the extremely talented designer of the Vegan Beer Fest UK posters/logos for last year and he is set to once again design them all in 2017. Yay for talent!

Amazing vegan restaurant in Mexico

If you’ve been in the same room as me during the past few years, you will have probably heard me talking about how incredible the vegan food scene is in Mexico City. I never stop banging on about it.

As if I wasn’t impressed enough with the food scene in this mega city, Vegan INC had to go and take things to a whole new level tonight.

Situated in a posh shopping mall in the upmarket area of Polanco, Vegan INC is a casual vegan dining restaurant with two locations in the northern city of Monterrey. This Mexico City location has been open for a few months with a second outlet set to open later this year.

The food is absolutely exquisite. Take a look at some of the dishes we devoured.

Out table was overflowing with out of this world plant-based cuisine.

And in an FGV first, we were too full for cake so I have definite plans to head back to Vegan INC as soon as possible to try out the impressive dessert case.

Get to Mexico. Dine with Vegan INC. Follow them on Instagram.

FGV Devours Mexico City

I am publishing a new micro and very DIY video series over on Facebook called FGV Devours.

I’ll be sharing the videos here as well in case any readers don’t like to visit the dreaded FB space.

First episode of the series features one of my favourite food places on the planet, Los Loosers.

You can follow them on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

Vegan food in Mexico knows no limits

Are you getting tired of me raving about vegan food in Mexico City?

Apologies, but I can’t stop when I keep discovering more and more exquisite plant-based delicacies around every corner.

A few days ago, Josh and I headed to a gorgeous bistro called Coco y Chia and it has been a long while since a vegan eatery has impressed me to this level.

Firstly, the restaurant is gorgeous. Set opposite one of the prettiest public parks in the city, Coco y Chia is sweetly decorated with a shaded courtyard.

Then there is the food. Food on another level.

See the photos below showing a bowl of tortilla soup, tofu scramble with refried beans, sweet potato enchiladas with squash flowers and finally a raw cheesecake topped with luscious lychees.

Best vegan sandwich on the planet?

Is this the best vegan sandwich on the planet?

Please post a link to any sandwich you think is superior.

Just had this beyond amazing #vegan lasagne burger delivered thanks to @losloosers #cdmx

Your eyes are not deceiving you. That is vegan lasagne inside a roll. If you look carefully you will also see fresh green beans.

I recently devoured this glory thanks to Los Loosers, the pioneering vegan food business in Mexico City that delivers all orders via bicycle. I’m fairly certain this was the finest sandwich I have ever been served.

Even if you have no current plans to visit Mexico City, you should follow Los Loosers on Instagram to keep track of their beyond delicious creations.
