Most liked FGV Instagram posts of 2020

Somehow, 2020 felt like a blur I completely missed AND a gruelling marathon that never wanted to end at the same time.

It has been tough for every single person I know and excruciating for some.

The financial downturn caused by the pandemic meant that I had to relocate from Mexico to the UK in search of work. I am now in Sheffield, working and waiting out the pandemic.

I have given up trying to predict the future, so I wanted to take some time out of my day to look back on the most popular posts of mine from Instagram in 2020.

Most of them are happy and carefree, but a few are more serious.

Join me in taking a break from our collective unpredictable monotony by looking back.

They might be a tad difficult to see in that grid, so let me give you a closer look at my top nine Instagram posts of 2020 below.

Number 9 was a surprise to me. I took a quick snap of the vegan advertising by the West Cornwall Pasty Co and more than 1,400 people liked it.

We vegans are sometimes easy to please!

Number 8 was well deserved!

I am currently working with legendary vegan eatery Make No Bones here in Sheffield and a post I shared of their Sunday roast dinner got a lot of love.

You can still order it for takeaway or delivery, but you might be waiting a while until you can get a drink and sit in for dining.

Supermarket posts always get a lot of views and likes, and this post featuring my Tesco haul was no exception.

It helps that I’ve included some of the most popular vegan products of the year in the photo, including This Isn’t bacon and Applewood cheese.

The Vegan Society included a same-sex wedding on the cover of their magazine and when I posted a photo on my Instagram feed, it garnered more than 1,700 likes!

The fifth most-popular post from Instagram feed during 2020 was another supermarket haul share.

This time it was all about ten products I bought from Waitrose in Sheffield. You can click through all the photos in the post to make sure you don’t miss out on this popular post.

One of my favourite vegan brands on the planet made it to the number four spot on this list.

I shared news of a Vegenaise sighting in Tesco and I had a few lovely things to say about the groundbreaking product. It also attracted almost 100 comments!

This post about my arrival back to the UK was the third most liked of 2020.

It is rare for a non-food photo to rank highly with vegans, but maybe some people were a little happy to have me back in the country?

Oh, the drama!

I mouthed off on Instagram to complain about the price disparity between a vegan pasty and an accidentally-vegan pasty at Asda.

People went wild in the comments of this second most-liked Instagram post, some agreeing with me and some calling me a dickhead.

The most-liked post on my Fat Gay Vegan Instagram account nabbed the top spot by only 30+ likes.

I shared an old graphic I originally made and posted back in 2014. It apparently struck a chord with my Instagram followers again in 2020.

Stay strong and let’s see how long this year takes to pass. Buckle up!

Top nine Instagram posts of 2019

It’s the end of 2019 so I thought I would jump on the bandwagon and highlight the most liked posts from my Instagram post from across the year.

Here is an overview of the nine most liked of the year.

Let’s break it down into individual posts.

Here are the top nine posts from my Instagram account for 2019, with the most popular at the bottom.

Enjoy… and please follow me on Instagram if you don’t already.

The ninth most popular post was a photo of me accompanied by a plea for people to not buy or breed dogs. It resonated with a lot of people and is a message for the ages!

There was a HUGE response for this photo of my Follow Your Heart pin. I never expected this to be on the end of year list, let alone come in at number eight.

This is the first of two photos of London vegan cheese shop La Fauxmagerie to make my top nine Instagram list for 2019. Having two entries is proof of how excited vegans were about this shop opening.

Vegan food in airports can be a bit uninspired so this photo of my breakfast at Wagamama at Heathrow got a lot of likes. It was a tasty treat to enjoy before a long haul flight.

I shared this message from Chapter One coffee shop in Edinburgh and it was popular enough to land at number five on my top nine list for the year. People loved reading news of this popular café switching to become a totally vegan business.

I am surprised this post took off like it did because it is kinda an ugly photo! The Wicked range in Tesco is one of the most successful product launches I have ever seen and this photo being in my top nine is evidence that people can’t get enough.

This post is not a happy read and contains a few upsetting memories of bad times from throughout my life. People who follow me on Instagram were kind and supportive, making this the third most popular post of mine for 2019.

Warning: it is a very upsetting read so do proceed with caution.

LOTS of people responded positively to this photo I took in Heathrow airport. It is exciting to see so many mainstream business be so open about their vegan options.

La Fauxmagerie took the number one slot on my Instagram account for 2019. News of this vegan cheese shop opening in London broke the Internet and more than 4,500 people liked this photo.

Much love to everyone who has helped make my blog and social media accounts viable for another year.

All of this is done to help promote veganism and independent vegan businesses. I want people to go vegan and stay vegan to help improve outcomes for animals.

FGV is now verified

Here is a super short post to tell you two things:

  1. I have a fab Instagram account that you might like to follow
  2. My Instagram account has just been verified and now sports a super smart blue tick

Yep, it’s official.

There is only one FGV!

My Instagram account is the perfect place to see the latest news from my vegan markets, keep updated on my food adventures in the UK and Mexico, plus see the occasional drunken story from when I venture out to trashy gay bars.

What’s not to love?!

You can follow me on Instagram and check out some recent posts below.

Instagram

I just wanted to stop by and remind everyone that my Instagram account is a great place to keep track of all my eating adventures.

In addition, my account just passed the 60,000 follower milestone, so a massive thank you to everyone following me over there.

My Instagram account is also the place where I post the Hackney Downs Vegan Market trader line up each Friday, in case you need inspiration for Saturday eating.

Best nine of Instagram 2017

As I do at the end of each year, I like to share the most popular photos from my Instagram account from across the previous twelve months.

As you can see from the list below, Wagamama made the list three times and bizarrely the same dish made up two of those posts! If you work at Wagamama and you make a lot of money, I won’t say no to a monetary showing of appreciation. I didn’t post those pics for my own financial return, but holy shit did you people get some incredible PR from me this year.

Some of the entries are surprising (that popcorn chicken in at number 3 and those tiffin bites appearing AT ALL?!) and it is extremely telling that eight of the nine photos feature products from huge, non-vegan multinational companies.

If you need proof of how mainstream and commodified veganism and plant-based eating has become, this list might just come in handy.

Enjoy reliving these most-liked moments from 2017 and if you don’t already, follow me over on Instagram for new adventures in non-animal living in 2018.

Here we go, starting with number nine and counting down to the most popular:

Number 9.

Number 8.

Number 7.

Number 6.

Number 5.

Number 4.

Number 3.

Number 2.

Number 1. The most-liked photo of 2017 on the FGV Instagram account

And finally, here are the top nine in a handy grid for a recap if you need it.

See you all next year!

Follower drives on Instagram

One form of support I’ve been involved with as a blogger and social media person recently is Follower Drives.

I got the idea a few days ago when I was visiting a brand new vegan restaurant in Sitges, Spain. Spice Garden is the only 100% vegan restaurant in Sitges and I was a bit disappointed that the Instagram account for the restaurant had quite a small number of followers.

During my meal, I posted a series of photos on my own Instagram asking my followers to consider following the restaurant. I set a target of 500 followers and if you click through to the account now, you will see that we were able to zoom right past that number.

The restaurant started with 187 followers and now has over 1,300 in just a matter of days.

I applied the same campaign idea to raising the follower count for a brand new late night vegan bar in Barcelona called Bar de Retro. This time we took them from 99 followers to over 1,200 in a day!

My latest Follower Drive is for a London vegan shoe store and ethical boutique called The Third Estate.

This store is exquisite but their Instagram account had been languishing around the 700 follower mark for a while. I set a target of 2,000 followers and we are almost there within 24 hours. I think they need just about 200 more.

Please get involved and get over to their profile.

I hope you can join me for more Follower Drives in the future. I think it is a great way to give independent vegan businesses a boost and help raise their online profiles.
