Best vegan food in London just got better

Do you remember when I swore a lot about the food from Cook Daily?

In this blog post (and this one) I wasn’t shy about telling you how freaking awesome this Shoreditch food provider is and I insisted you should all get over there to eat.

Well, now it appears the best food in London has gone and gotten an upgrade.

King from Cook Daily tagged me in this short Instagram video to let me know how the already amazing Full English bowl has been improved.

Check it out!

Yes!

I’m loving life in Mexico City at the moment but I would be the happiest FGV on the planet if I could get my hands on this bowl in East London.

Head on in to Cook Daily for this food glory and please say hi from a very hungry and jealous FGV.

Gourmet vegan food in Shoreditch

Joey’s Kitchen is a newish food business run by a group of friends named Samantha, Fran and John. This terrific trio recently set up business with a residency at Joyeux Bordel cocktail bar in Shoreditch until the end of May 2016, plus there are a few other places where you will see them popping up.

“But what about the food!” I hear  you scream.

The menu is sparse but certainly not basic. The three items on offer include a homemade seitan hot dog, stacked nachos and their signature Jarlsberg style cheese grilled sourdough sandwich, all of which can be served loaded up with different toppings.

Menu

The people behind Joey’s Kitchen like to talk about their culinary influences, but one look at those toppings will give you all the info you need.

The food business started off a few years ago doing event catering and supper clubs and then just over 6 months ago moved into DIY Space for London, a south London arts and social centre. Joey’s Kitchen is based there every Saturday and Sunday during the day offering food, sweet stuff plus coffee and other drinks.

In addition, the foodies will soon be running a stall at the street food market in their local Leytonstone area and have lots of exciting other things on the cards for the coming months!

Wanna see the food at the Shoreditch pop up? Here you go!

Best in London… again!

A few months ago, I wrote an extremely-excitable blog post heralding Cook Daily as the best vegan food provider in London. You can read the original post here.

Flash forward to last night and the food I was served up in Shoreditch has forced me to announce a successor to the crown.

There is a new ‘best in London’ eatery and it is…. Cook Daily. Well, it is almost Cook Daily.

Let me explain.

Last chance to enjoy

You all know one of my favourite things to eat in London is the seitan burger from Essential Vegan, right?

Vanessa and her helpers have been serving this gorgeous handheld delight at Pump food market in Shoreditch for the past few months.

If you haven’t already treated yourself, you need to be really fast before they disappear for a while.

Sunday September 13th, 2015 is the final day you will find Essential Vegan in Shoreditch. Following that date, Vanessa will be packing up the kitchen and looking for a permanent location.

Don’t miss out! Get to Shoreditch this weekend.
Don’t forget to order some crunchy polenta fries with your final burger!

Extra note: this photo originally appeared on my Instagram account.

My favourite London burger

The days of thinking of Shoreditch as a wasteland overrun with hipsters and lacking in vegan food choices appear to be well and truly over.

Following on from my hysterical post yesterday about the best vegan food in London now being served in Shoreditch, I bring you even more news from the ultra trendy enclave.

My favourite vegan burger served in London now has a temporary pop up home smack bang on Shoreditch High Street.

Essential Vegan is a name known to most vegans in London. Vanessa Almeida enjoyed a pop up cafe for months on Portobello Road, has sold thousands of copies of her vegan cookbook and has been a regular food trader on Brick Lane.

Vanessa has mixed things up a bit and you can now find her trading every single day at Pump Shoreditch, a very cool undercover food market housed in an old petrol station on Shoreditch High Street.

Check out the fabulous food I purchased from her yesterday, including what is certainly my favourite vegan burger in the UK. You can’t go wrong with seitan steak and homemade vegan cheese!

Save some, eat some

As you probably know, there is a venue called Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium. It is a cafe in east London that is also a home for rescue cats.

Even though the cafe serves some vegan options, I am yet to visit. I think I have a problem with the concept. It doesn’t sit well with me that animals are on display.

The cats in the Emporium are comfortable and wanting for nothing, according to the website. They have enormous amounts of space and are free to leave the public area when they choose. All food and welfare concerns are dealt with and there are guidelines in place for how cafe diners interact with the cats.

But I still don’t like it.

I don’t like the concept of any animal being on display, no matter how loved. As I walked past the front of the cafe recently, it struck me how much it looked like a pet store. People can stand at the window and stare at cats inside.

I don’t think I would ever go on a safari to look at animals. I would never go to a zoo, even if the establishment had a pristine record of animal conservation. I hate hobby farms and baby farm animal exhibits at fairs.

Loved and cared for animals on show are still animals on show for human enjoyment. I believe this is a practise that needs to be questioned, challenged and changed.

If it is cat interaction you are after, you can always visit one of the countless animal rescue shelters around the country where the animals are desperate for companionship, playmates and the odd spot of grooming.

As far as I can tell from their website, Dinah’s is a commercial enterprise designed to make profit. I am opposed to people making profit from displaying animals.

To add further unease to the situation, the patrons of the cat cafe have the choice of dining on animal-derived foods during their visit. Don’t hurt cats but by all means eat feta or milk. Or why not even indulge in a salmon salad?

Just don’t hurt the cats.

How do you all feel about this sort of cafe?
