Meet Domenic

Yesterday I had the pleasure of speaking in front of a couple of hundred people at the Vegan Life Live show in London. I also had the immense pleasure of meeting a young vegan named Domenic.

Just before I started my presentation, Domenic approached me to say hello and let me know that he always looks for me in his mum’s vegan magazines.

He told me he is a vegan because it is good for animals.

Domenic was very kind in telling me that he had been invited to a birthday party but decided instead to come to the vegan show and meet me.

Domenic asked if he could have a photo taken with me and last night his mum sent it to me (with permission to share). Here I am with the inspirational Domenic.

During the Q&A section after my talk, Domenic asked a question that I almost never get asked but secretly loved being asked. He wanted to know about my favourite food. I told him all about potato.

I am grateful to everyone for coming along to my talk and feel extra thankful for Domenic.

He made me hopeful and in this day and age, that can be a tough emotion to feel.

Thank you, Domenic. Thank you for making me feel happy and thank you for being a kind person who cares about animals.

Announcing FGV nude calendar for 2017

Have you ever been presented with an opportunity that is both terrifying AND exciting?

I am THRILLED to announce I have started production on the FGV Nude Calendar 2017!

If you know me well you’ll be aware that I’ve always been more than a bit body conscious. Like many people, I have been confronted and demeaned by the mostly-unrealistic projections of what a good body should look like that are forced upon us.

These images have bombarded me from all directions, from mainstream media all the way to organisations like People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PeTA). My fat, gay and vegan body just isn’t deemed ‘good enough’ by a lot of people with power and big public voices.

So why the change in attitude to showing my body in public?

A photographer approached me a few months ago with the idea of releasing a calendar with nude images of me as a way of confronting body shaming. The idea behind the FGV Nude Calendar is to challenge these damaging stereotypes head-on while also showing a alternative-to-the-ideal body type in positive, natural settings.

I have promised the photographer that all of the locations will remain top secret as we want to make a big splash when the calendar is released later this year, but I was allowed to give you a sneak preview of the shoot we did recently in Mexico.

I’m not looking forward to the snowy location shoot in a few months, but I’m sure knowing the calendar is for such a good cause will help me get through it.

All profits from the FGV Nude Calendar 2017 will be put toward a campaign to persuade PeTA to stop using body shaming, sexism, objectification of women and other forms of negative treatment of humans in their own campaigns.

Brighton weekender

If you have been living under a rock, I have two things to say to you:

1. What’s it like under there? I’ve always imagined it to be very snug.

2. VegfestUK Brighton is happening this weekend!

VegfestUK is mammoth and legendary. Attendees this year are set to enjoy more than 150 stands showcasing vegan food, products, activist groups, charities and more. Vegan comedians are going to attempt to make the crowd laugh and there will be plenty of vegan beer and cider doing the rounds.

I think there might be just a few of the 10 000 or so tickets remaining, so be very quick and book now.

Of course I didn’t want to be left out of proceedings, so I am setting up a very low key DIY postcard shop at stall Q16 on the ground floor. Please drop in to buy a few cards, pick up my event flyers, sign up to my email list and have a chat.

Postcards for sale

I will also be hosting a fabulous LGBT Social on Sunday at 1pm as part of Vegfest celebrations. Click here to read more.

And…. there is more.

I am a judge on the new product showcase. I get to be all judgemental! Click here to read about it.

See you soon, Brighton!

Chicken and rainbows

My Instagram account got a good workout today. I spent a large part of the day in north London and managed to snap a few photos of things that caught my attention.

Here are two of my favourite things from Saturday March 1, 2014.

Plate of vegan chicken at Loving Hut, Archway – deep fried balls with sweet & sour sauce, smoked chicken and salty chicken

Super cute rainbow cardigan in ethical cotton made by Komodo – seen in The Third Estate boutique, Kentish Town

New Year’s Cheer

24 hours on, I am still a bit worn out from hosting my vegan New Year’s Eve dinner for 70 people at Saf Restaurant & Bar. It was a lot of hard work, but well worth it. Every single guest looked to be having a fantastic night out.

My pal Luke has kindly offered to stop by and give you his take on the evening. You can follow Luke on Twitter and check out his blog.

Tell us what you thought, Luke.
