Sheffield eatery turns 100% vegan

Wow. Calm down, Sheffield!

Sheffield is a runaway vegan train.

Joni is a deeply adored eatery known for macaron, brunch and coffee. The big news out of the South Yorkshire city this week is that Joni has become a 100% vegan business.

Yes. Vegan macaron. Vegan cakes. Vegan milks. Vegan bread. Vegan pastries. Everything is vegan and everything looks absolutely stunning.

I’m thrilled to hear this news and can’t wait to get along for a visit.

Please follow Joni on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Let them know how much you appreciate and support their big switch.

Vegan food in Glasgow

When asked about the most vegan-friendly destination around the UK, I always list Glasgow in my top three. It often makes number one.

The Scottish city has long been a haven for plant-based foodies and there is actually too much choice if you are only visiting for a few days.

If you live there, you will already understand that Glasgow is a world class vegan city.

It might actually be difficult to keep updated with all the latest vegan news. That’s what prompted this blog post. I wanted to list all of the 100% vegan places in Glasgow. Please let me know if I have missed any.

This list doesn’t include the non-vegan places which offer fantastic vegan options, so please use the HappyCow listings to discover those hidden gems and join the Vegan Edinburgh and Glasgow Facebook group if you would like keep informed about all things vegan in that part of the world.

Now, let’s start our vegan tour of Glasgow!

The Flying Duck – junk food kitchen, late night bar, and live music venue that is famous for hosting mini vegan fetes inside!

Falafel To Go – I’ve seen so many photos online showing people lining up for this food, it must be good. This hole in the wall spot is near the corner of Hope and Sauchiehall.

Stereo Cafe Bar – solid comfort food in this legendary live music venue and bar. Tucked away on Renfield Lane, Stereo is one of the finest spots in Glasgow for food, drink and live music. They also host some fab club nights.

Picnic – this deli and cafe on Ingram Street in the Merchant City section of Glasgow is truly a gem of a place. They serve up fresh sandwiches, nutritious bowls, hearty breakfasts, and irresistible cakes and pastries.

The Glasvegan – this comfort food spot in St Enoch Square can only be properly represented by viewing the menu.

Mono Cafe Bar – what can I add when it comes to this legendary Glasgow location? The food is pure decadence and it remains one of the best places in the city to catch live music. Extra curricular activities include the on site record shop and our annual Glasgow Vegan Beer Fest which is hosted here!

Lotus Vegetarian Cuisine – I have never heard people rave as much about a place as people from Glasgow rave about Lotus. If you are in the mood for a very typical Chinese/UK food joint with all sorts of fried and sticky dishes, this is the place for you.

In Bloom – located very close to St Georges Cross subway station, this is a Nirvana-inspired vegan cafe serving tasty-looking food. Yes, as in Kurt Cobain!

The Hug & Pint – maybe my favourite place to eat in the city, The Hug & Pint is a gorgeous vegan kitchen combined with a fabulous beer bar and live music venue. Located between St Georges Cross and Kelvinbridge stations along Great Western Road.

The 78 Bar & Kitchen – with the return of superstar chef VSO to this kitchen, you can now consume some of the best vegan food in the UK at The 78. Top tip: try to grab a table close to the open fire on a chilly day. They get a few of them in Scotland, apparently.

The V & V Cafe – this West End establishment is everything. By that I mean it is a coffee shop, a cafe, a mini grocery store, and a completely wonderful place for vegans to visit.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bh6O9oqlfjL/

The Old Hairdresser’s – this isn’t a dining establishment but this music venue and gallery space serves only vegan booze. Situated opposite Stereo.

Serenity Now – another vegan spot on Great Western Road and another name inspired by a pop culture reference. This one takes its name from a famous episode of television sitcom Seinfeld. Those burritos, though!

Vegan spot re-opens in Sheffield

If my super fabulous Sheffield contact Jez (who works at The Incredible Nutshell) didn’t exist, I wouldn’t know a fraction of the vegan info that I do.

Jez keeps me updated with a lot of news and is such a proud promoter of all things vegan in Sheffield.

It was Jez who told me a while back about a new vegan café called Wild Leaf.

Flash forward a bit and I’m now being informed by my South Yorkshire super sleuth that Wild Leaf had been closed for a short while but has now reopened under new management.

Wild Leaf has a focus on nutritious foods such as buddha bowls, smoothies, salads, and sandwiches while it also serves items such as a full English breakfast, coffee and cakes.

The cafe is about a 5-minute walk from Steel City Cakes and The Burger Garden. You can see the exact location thanks to Google Maps.

You can like Wild Leaf Vegan Cafe on Facebook.

New vegan eatery in Cumbria

Great news!

The Cumbrian town of Whitehaven has a vegan eatery thanks to Louise and Dave.

Check out what Louise had to say about Beans & Greens:

Whitehaven is a lovely little town in West Cumbria. After living in France for 10 years, my husband Dave and I wanted to start up a vegan bistro and a shutdown cafe was available to rent in the centre of town. We have decided to go with a small menu which is totally homemade to provide quality food to our customers. Pizza is one of our favourite things to make (we have plans to build a wood fired pizza oven very soon). From a kale pesto based pizza to an Indian pizza with creamy masala sauce and roasted chickpeas, there’s something for everyone. We have starters such as nachos with our homemade melted vegan cheese and spicy salsa as well as our tasty onion bhajis with sweet chilli sauce. Our desserts include homemade cheesecake with strawberries and vegan ice cream or chocolate chilli cake. Basically we love vegan food, the ethos of ‘being vegan’, and what we can do for the planet if we all work together. We want to show people that vegan food is delicious and can be enjoyed by everyone.

Sounds fabulous!

You can like the Beans & Greens Facebook page and follow them on Instagram.

The café is dog friendly and is currently open Wednesday through Saturday.

Vegan cafe in Bradford

This blog post started life thanks to my partner Josh saying to me, “Hey, there is a new vegan cafe in Bradford and the menu looks amazing”.

So, I’m here to tell you about The Willow Tree Cafe located in Saltaire, Bradford but I thought it would also be amusing to give you an insight into how a short blog post like this can take me more than an hour to put together.

Following on from Josh’s statement, I felt it was my duty to at least understand where exactly Saltaire is positioned on a map. This task also found me comparing distances from Saltaire to major cities and towns in the region. I discovered that Saltaire is twice the driving distance from Manchester as it is from Leeds.

Once I was satisfied that I could place Saltaire geographically, I decided that it would be nice to know a little bit of history. I soon found myself wrapped up in the life and times of the mill and the town’s namesake, Sir Titus Salt. Yep, his name was joined with the River Aire to form the town’s name.

I am now obsessed with the fact that Saltaire is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town was built as a Victorian model village in 1851 and all of the buildings are now protected.

This is how ridiculous writing one single blog post can be for me… and I do this every single day of the year!

Because I am now in love with Saltaire, I’m even more thrilled to know about The Willow Tree Cafe situated on Fairfield Road.

The menu is absolutely stunning and I’m particularly impressed by the Sunday roast consisting of seitan beef, roasties, maple roasted root veg, greens, Yorkshire pudding, and lashings of homemade beef style gravy.

Do yourself a massive favour and get in for some tasty comfort food.

Follow The Willow Tree Cafe on Instagram and Facebook. See their exact location thanks to Google Maps.

Now, do you wanna see some vegan food being served up in a UNESCO World Heritage Site village?

Vegan grassroots activism

If you have ever thought about becoming more involved in spreading the vegan message but weren’t sure how to contribute effectively, you really should take a moment to get familiar with Veggies Catering.

Established in 1984, Veggies is everything good about vegan campaigning.

Based in Nottingham, Veggies is a volunteer-led social enterprise dedicated to raising awareness of the benefits of a vegan approach to life through catering at fairs, festivals, private events, local markets, and basically most places people ask them to appear.

The underpinning ethos behind Veggies is simple yet powerful:

They offer tasty, wholesome snacks, favouring fairly traded, organically grown and/or locally sourced ingredients, as well as information exploring the links between diet, animal suffering and the environment.

The catering group is recognised not only for its delicious and nutritious cuisine, but also the incredible work it does to support other grassroots campaign groups and events.

When I took a vegan band and animal rights group around the UK to spread the compassionate word via the Vegan Roadshow in 2015, we found a very warm welcome (plus a venue and a place to sleep!) thanks to Pat and Veggies.

We had an incredible time brining our event to The Sumac Centre and discovered so much about what Veggies does for its local community and to raise vegan awareness. The centre (funded by the catering outreach work done by Veggies) is home to many crucial community events and support happenings.

If you want to discover more about the incredible, pioneering approach to vegan outreach performed by Veggies, get over to their website now.

If you see how valuable their work is and I really don’t think anyone reading this couldn’t, you can also donate via the Veggies website in order to help keep them operational or even consider volunteering if you have some spare time.

Follow Veggies on Facebook and Twitter and be sure to check out the huge line up of events where they will be serving up food throughout Spring and Summer 2018. Take a look at the latest flyer below and bookmark their upcoming events page. You can always catch up with Veggies at the twice-a-month Sneinton Vegan Market in Nottingham.

Gorgeous vegan food in Glasgow

One of my favourite places to eat (and drink) in Glasgow is The 78.

This restaurant/pub in Finnieston has long been a hot spot for satisfying vegan comfort food and is also well known for its music events.

The menu has always been good but the return of superstar chef VSO (following a stint setting up Harmonium in Edinburgh) means that the food is being elevated a few levels higher.

A new, full menu is being readied for public release very soon but in the meantime, drool over some of these food photos of all the testing and culinary exploration going on in the kitchen.

Glasgow, do you know how good you have got it?!

Follow The 78 on Instagram and stay tuned for more gorgeous food updates.

New vegan food spot in Sheffield

There is a new vegan food spot in Sheffield and Charley of superstar vegan grocery store Incredible Nutshell has put together this fabulous review. Enjoy:

As you know, it’s a great time for veganism in Sheffield right now, there are new vegan menus and vegan-friendly establishments springing up all the time at the moment.

However, most of the action has been in the south of the city (in and around Sheffield’s ‘Vegan Quarter’) or in the city centre – there have been precious few local options for vegans living in the north of the city. Until now.

Sunshine Deli is an established cafe and takeaway next to the Sheffield Wednesday football ground in Hillsborough. New owners Sarah and Sarah took over a few months ago and have just launched an epic home-cooked vegan menu, including Yorkshire Pudding Wraps (trust me, this is a big deal in Yorkshire!), southern fried chicken, kebabs, pies, full cooked breakfast and more!

They’re keen to develop the vegan menu even further and are happy to hear customers’ suggestions for new dishes.

The cafe is open 7 days a week during the day, plus extra hours on match days. As of this week they’ll also be opening Friday and Saturday evenings until 9pm, to provide some much-needed evening eating out options in the north of the city. The cafe is dog-friendly too.

So if you’re anywhere near Sheffield, or visiting for the football at Hillsborough, go check them out!
