Buy vegan cheese and cakes in Camden

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I am involved with rolling out a new vegan market in central London and I’ve now got some news for you.

Tasty news!

Vegan Makers at Buck Street Market is starting small (sigh… COVID is making everything so tough) but the three traders we have lined up for you this week are top shelf.

Vegan Makers at Buck Street is a 4-day a week collection of traders located in the courtyard of Buck Street Market. You might have already seen this impressive complex made from shipping containers, just a few metres along Camden High Street from Camden Town Underground station. See the location thanks to Google Maps.

Our artisan market is starting small this week, but you can get along for some of the finest vegan products in the city. (Vegan Makers is on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday between 11am and 5pm)

What will you find this week?

Vegan Makers is now a permanent home for Honestly Tasty, the sensational vegan cheese company based in Wood Green.

Run by sister and brother team Beth and Mike, Honestly Tasty is quickly becoming the vegan cheese brand everyone is talking about. Mike trained in vegan cheesemaking in Berlin, so stop by their stall to talk about their interesting family story and to buy their game-changing cheeses.

You can also follow Honestly Tasty on Instagram.

You can’t have a Fat Gay Vegan market or trader get-together without Chanel and Cake Cult LDN.

In her previous incarnation as Vegan Delice, Chanel was the heart and soul of Hackney Downs Vegan Market. Her cakes, donuts, and tray bakes would bring people from all over London.

We expect Cake Cult LDN to be just as popular at Vegan Makers at Buck Street Market, especially with busy people on their lunch breaks.

Everything Chanel makes is delicious and I say that as an authoritative source, having eaten MANY items over the years.

You can also follow Cake Cult LDN on Instagram.

Have you been looking for vegan-friendly CBD oil?

Our third trader this week from Thursday until Sunday at Vegan Makers at Buck Street is Cosmic Oils.

Cosmic Oils specialise in high strength CBD oils and related products. Everything they do is homemade in London and of course it’s always vegan. You can also follow Cosmic Oils on Instagram.

Get along to from 11am this Thursday June 24, 2021. These traders will be in the courtyard of Buck Street Market Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday this week between 11am and 5pm.

You can follow Vegan Makers on Instagram for all the latest trader information each week.

If you need more reason to visit our traders (umm… vegan cheese and cake is not enough?), Buck Street Market is overflowing with vegan food options from their regular restaurants.

PRTZL is on the first floor and is home to 100% vegan burgers and hot dogs. Bad Vegan (on the top level but not 100% vegan hence the name I guess) is having their grand opening on Thursday June 24 and are even giving away free food. Magic Falafel is 100% vegan and they are also on the first floor. There are many other vegan options on site as well as just a few metres around the corner (Temple of Seitan and What The Pitta to name just two).

Buy cheese. Buy cake. Buy CBD oils. Support independent vegan traders.

Want to trade at a new vegan market in London?

It isn’t a stretch to say Hackney Downs Vegan Market was one of the most influential plant-based things to happen to London over the past 10 years.

The opening weekend welcomed approximately 5,000 people and the market acted as the launching pad for some of the most recognised vegan brands in the UK capital.

Ever since Hackney Downs Vegan Market came to an end, I’ve been thinking and dreaming of bringing another market to life.

It’s 2021 and I feel like it’s time to stop dreaming. I want to get a vegan market up and running again!

Fat Gay Vegan (that’s me) is teaming up with Buck Street Market on Camden Hight Street to launch a 5-day a week artisan market just for vegan products. Yes, that’s correct. 5-days a week, every week. The market will run 11am until 6pm from Wednesday until Sunday.

Vegan Makers at Buck Street is set to be a collection of stalls celebrating the best take home vegan products including deli items, cheese, pantry items homewares, clothing, candles, and personal products.

Located just a few steps from Camden Town Underground station on one of the busiest streets in the UK, Vegan Makers at Buck Street will be the most exciting place to shop in London for compassionate consumers.

Buck Street Market is a 3-level complex featuring rooftop bars, restaurants, street food, and shops. Vegan Makers will be in the central courtyard on street level, meaning our vegan stalls lead out to Camden High Street and are less than a 60-second walk from Camden Town Underground station.

Camden is undoubtedly the vegan centre of London and visitors to Buck Street will have a huge choice of places to dine in the area. Even though there will be no hot food on our market, Camden is simply overflowing with plant-based food outlets.

Buck Street Market itself is home to vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants and cafes, while legendary eateries Temple of Seitan and Purezza are only a 2-minute walk away (to name just two).

People can shop at Vegan Makers at Buck Street and then have the tough job of narrowing down the dozens of plant-based food choices in the neighbourhood.

The above photos shows what our stalls look like. They are white metal with folding doors on both sides, meaning traders can lock their stall at the end of each day and will only have to worry about transporting perishables each day. No clumsy stalls to pack up. No heavy gazebos to drag home.

Vegan Makers at Buck Street is a chance for vegan businesses and independent traders to have a mini shop in the heart of London without having to commit to huge rents and business rates. WiFi is available for traders to use for payment devices, while there will be limited electricity for some stalls.

This shopping district is one of the most desired in London and a spot in the Vegan Makers section will expose traders and brands to potentially tens of thousands of shoppers every day. Weekends on this street are particularly busy and a summertime coming out of lockdown means record numbers of shoppers are expected.

Examples of what we would love to see on the vegan market:

  • Cheese and deli items
  • Kombucha
  • Wine, spirits, and champagne to take home
  • Cake or patisserie
  • Personal care products
  • Zero waste
  • Candles and gifts
  • Cruelty free make up
  • Organic pantry items
  • Jewellery
  • Hats, shoes, sunglasses, and clothing

Vegan Makers at Buck Street plans to launch in June 2021.

We have great introductory rates for the first month (even lower if you commit to the full month). There is no market in Central London where you could trade in such a high profile spot at these prices.

If you are a trader and want more information about booking a stall, email josh@fgvpr.co.uk and he will fill you in. This market is for vegan products only and spots are offered for the full 5 days each week. There are no weekend-only spots.

PLEASE NOTE: there will be NO hot food or street food on the Vegan Makers section of Buck Street Market. There are many 100% vegan food spots in Camden right now and this artisan market has been designed to add value to the area for vegan visitors, not take away from businesses already in Camden.

Top ten things to see at VegFestUK London

It is that time of the year.

London Olympia is transforming into the UK’s biggest vegan lifestyle show once again over the weekend of Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 October, 2019.

VegFestUK London will feature new products, cooking demos, informative talks, a food court, and opportunities to mix with thousands of other vegans and vegan-curious people.

To celebrate the 2019 outing of VegFestUK London, I’ve picked my top ten reasons why you should go.

Check them out below:

Ananda’s Marshmallows – Stall Number WM9: Ananda’s is famous for their vegan versions of Wagon Wheels, the much-loved sweet treat featuring marshmallow fluff sandwiched between to soft cookie discs. They call their version the Round Up. This weekend you can buy three for the price of two across the entire range.

LGBT Vegan Socials with FGV – Natural Therapy Zone Level 2: Yes, I’m singing the praises of my own social event. These two one-hour sessions are nothing more than an organised space where LGBTQ+ vegans and our allies can get together and meet each other. Just chat informally! There will also be cupcakes to eat.

Arancini Brothers – Stall Number CAT16: I shouldn’t need to tell you but Arancini Brothers make some of the finest vegan comfort food on the planet. Their savoury risotto balls are heavenly and I highly recommend you make their stand part of your weekend eating plans.

DÁPPA – Stall Number CAT1: Soft serve ice cream, anyone? I’ve eaten quite a bit of vegan soft serve ice cream around the world and these people make some of the best I’ve tried. They always are on top of their game when it comes to toppings as well. Be early for this because they will be BUSY.

Vegan Culinary Cruises – Stall Number QA5: You can come along to this stand to learn all about upcoming luxury vegan cruises taking place in Cambodia/Vietnam and the South of France but more importantly, it is where I will be based most of the weekend. Please come and say hello to me!

Follow Your Heart – Stall Number CB4: A must visit at any vegan show, FYH will be showcasing their incredible cheeses and salad dressings. Their legendary vegan mayonnaise, Vegenaise, is what I consider the best vegan product on the planet. Grab a jar or two!

Made In Hackney – Stall Number ME1: Made in Hackney is the amazing community kitchen project hosting out of this world vegan masterclasses. Money raised from these events helps run cooking and meal planning classes for at risk and low income members of our community. Stop by to learn about the charity and you can even grab a discount code to use against one of their future masterclasses.

Moo Free Chocolates – Stall Number CK4: This company is still one of my favourites of all time. I simply cannot get enough of their ‘hunnycomb’ variety. It is milk chocolate without the milk. Cows are friends!

Mouse’s Favourite – Stall Number WL3: You need to get along to this cheese stall early if you want the best pick. They will sell quickly. I especially recommend their camembert as it is one of the finest I have ever enjoyed.

Workers Playtime – Stall Number U16: Fabulous vegan shoe brand making their VegFestUK debut. Try and buy from two of their most popular styles plus check out what else is on the horizon. Stylish and ethical footwear.

Choosing a top ten was tough. Rest assured there is a lot more for you to discover at VegFestUK London this weekend.

Legendary vegan bakery in London robbed

The legendary vegan bakery Ms Cupcake of Brixton, London was broken into last night.

Sharing the news on their social media, staff showed the broken window where entrance to the shop was gained using a brick.

The update also stated that cash was stolen from the business.

The Ms Cupcake bakery is one of the true pioneer vegan businesses in the UK and was largely responsible for launching the booming interest in veganism we see today.

I recently interviewed Ms Cupcake founder Mellissa Morgan for Tenderly online magazine. We talked about the trials and tribulations of running an independent vegan business and how the biggest hurdles are often completely unexpected.

In the interview (which you can read online here), Mellissa talked of how the business recently recovered from a flood. This break in was never going to have good timing, but right now feels particularly difficult for the team.

Please consider what you might do to help support the Ms Cupcake team as they move past this trouble.

My suggestions are:

  • Visit the store as soon as you can and spend up big (they sell a huge range of pantry items, packaged sweets, ice cream, and of course legendary cakes and slices)
  • Follow Ms Cupcake on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook
  • If you are at VegFestUK London this week at Olympia, stop by the Ms Cupcake stall (stand number CAT0 – next to One Planet Pizza) and buy lots of cake

In addition, you can catch Mellissa presenting a talk at VegFestUK London on Saturday October 26, 2019 between 1:15pm and 1:45pm.

Mellissa will be talking about all things sweet on the Foodies Stage.

Learn how you can use alternatives to refined sugars in your baking but still get immensely indulgent and decadent results. Over the years Ms. Cupcake has changed and developed her recipes to reflect changing customer tastes and now you can learn her secrets. Find out how this Brixton bakery has removed a third of the sugar from their cupcakes and cakes and introduced both a menu of refined sugar free items and a menu suitable for diabetics.
