If you need a clear example of exactly how far attitudes towards vegan food have shifted over the past few years, you only have to look at in flight food served by airlines.
It used to be unheard of to be served even a small snack that was plant-based, but here we are in 2026 with full vegan meals up for grabs!
Check out my meal service from the British Airways flight I took this week from London Heathrow to Tokyo Haneda.

The first tray served to me featured an impressive butternut squash curry with rice. The curry was rich and flavourful, while the rice was fluffy perfection. I would eat this meal a few times a week and not be mad at all.
The tray was rounded out by a fresh roll, vegan margarine, soya milk, bean/corn salad, and coconut yoghurt pot.
Overall, I would give this meal a strong 9 out of 10. It was a surprisingly high standard and as good as some of the recent food I’ve been served in restaurants.
Next up was the breakfast tray and this was equally impressive.

A cooked vegan breakfast can be tough to find even on the land, so getting one of this quality in the air is impressive.
The hot portion of the meal featured a vegan sausage, tofu scramble, cooked tomato and mushroom, and baked beans. It might not looked like much when it is all squashed together in the tin tray, but this was a breakfast that left me feeling pretty satisfied.
Of course there was the obligatory side fruit salad with weirdly hard melon, but the little space bar/protein bar item was a pleasant surprise.
This breakfast was a solid 8 out of 10. Once again, I would be more than happy to be served a breakfast like this in a cafe on the ground.
What do you think? How do these compare with recent meals you’ve been served in the sky?
