I like to think I know about most of the vegan product launches in the UK, but sometimes things sneak past my snout.
Such was the case with this vegan butter brand I picked up today in Sainsbury’s. I’d never heard of it before.

This morning I was on a mission.
Having just picked up a freshly-baked loaf of sourdough from an independent bakery, I was looking for the perfect combination topping. Something simple but full of flavour.
I was walking up and down the aisles of Sainsbury’s in Whitechapel, searching for inspiration, when my eyes chanced upon a jar of Vegemite.
Vegemite was a staple of my earlier years growing up in Australia and I used to smother it on fresh bread with butter. The memories came flooding back and filled me with excitement as I made a beeline for the vegan margarines to see what I could use to recreate this childhood memory.
As I was weighing up whether to splash out on the plant-based Lurpak or not, a simple cardboard box grabbed my attention.
Mergulo plant-based butter!
I’ve never seen or even heard of this brand. The ingredients seem uncomplicated (including cashews) and there were two varieties from which to choose. Original and Dark Salt. I opted for the Dark Salt.
I rushed home and ate half my weight in bread, Mergulo, and Vegemite.
I then jumped online to learn a bit more about the brand and discovered that the packaging is purposively plastic-free, the company is based in Warwickshire, and the product is also available in a Garlic Herb variety.
How was it? I liked the taste a lot. I maybe overdid it a bit by combining the Dark Salt with the Vegemite, so next time I’ll try the original. I’m also extremely interested in adding some to my mashed potatoes soon.
Mergulo contains coconut oil so it does spread easier after sitting out of the fridge for a while, so plan ahead if you prefer a smoother application.
Mergulo is available in a lot of Sainsbury’s supermarkets around the UK and some independent grocery stores. You can read about the full range and search for a stockist near you on their website.
