I received a gorgeous delivery a few days ago and wanted to share the news with you all.

Magpye is based in Newcastle and their pies are all about being as ethical as they can. Of course they are all vegan, while they stay clear of palm oil and send everything out in eco-friendly packaging.

Here are a few of the vegan pies I was gifted by Magpye.

Check out the line up of pies currently being made and sold by Magpye:

  • Chick’n, Leek & Bacun

You have got to hand it to that line up of flavours. Top shelf stuff right there.

Support vegan business in Newcastle

Little Green is a vegan café, bar, health food store, and social space in Newcastle.

It has proven to be extremely popular with, and valuable to, the local community and it needs your help.

If you are reading this post on either August 21 or 22 of 2019, it would be wonderful if you could take a moment out of your day and a few coins out of your wallet to help support the security and expansion of this crucial independent vegan business.

Little Green currently has a CrowdFunder campaign in order to enhance their refill station in order to promote low waste living.

This is what Little Green has to say about the campaign:

When we first discussed our ideas and plans to open a plant based cafe and health food shop, a huge part of it was to be as eco-friendly and kind to the planet as possible. Having a refill station so people can come in and help themselves to various liquids, using their own containers and therefore cutting down on plastic was important to us and we set up a small station in the cafe. This has proven popular with our customers as there isn’t anything like this in our immediate area but there is much more we would like to do. We have taken example from other businesses and are looking to build a bigger structure providing more options including foods such as grains and rice so more customers can visit and help themselves thus cutting out packaging.

All of this is part of our commitment to providing tasty, healthy food, great nutritional advice through our resident nutritionist Gareth with vitamins and products to suit your needs and a lasting commitment to be kind to our planet. We would really love to expand on the services we provide to as many as possible.

This is a fab campaign to throw your weight behind. There is only one day remaining for the campaign and they are currently at 82% of the target.

New vegan spot in Newcastle

There is a new vegan spot opening in Newcastle, UK and it sounds fabulous.

Little Green is a café and health food shop that is 100% vegan, located in the Sandyford section of the city.

Here is a little bit about the new business:

We are ‘Little Green’, a family run health food shop and cafe / bistro serving plant based, freshly prepared food, coffees, teas and a wide selection of soft and alcoholic drinks. We serve nutritious, plant based food in our cafe which is, wherever possible, locally sourced and organic, with a range of gluten free options available. Vegan bar and restaurant in Newcastle

Try to stop this vegan revolution sweeping the UK and you will not be successful.

The northern city of Newcastle has enjoyed eating at vegetarian restaurant The Bohemian for a while now, but they have even more reason to fall head over heels in love with the place.

The Bohemian is now 100% vegan.

The kitchen serves a whole range of comfort food, with their pizzas getting a lot of attention on social media.

Unlike some pubs that launch vegan food menus but forget about the bar aspect, The Bohemian has also converted their drinks menu to be 100% vegan.

As if all of this isn’t cool enough, there is also a record store INSIDE the restaurant. Yep, you can shop for vinyl after you fill up on tasty food.

Vegan Restaurant Week

Here is some first-class consumer activism.

Emma of blog Canny Food has started a fantastic initiative to make non-vegan restaurants and cafés in her area more aware and inclusive of veganism.

Vegan Restaurant Week is a simple idea but certainly one that can pack a lot of punch.

Restaurants in the Newcastle and north east region are being encouraged to develop and promote purposively vegan menu items for the week of January 23 – 29, 2017.

While some completely-vegan eateries are taking place, Emma has been more focussed on getting the non-vegan outlets on board, encouraging them to raise their game when it comes to plant-based food offerings. Establishments that previously had not given vegan food a second thought are lining up to make plant-based options a priority for this campaign.

Vegan Restaurant Week is getting a LOT of attention around Newcastle including mainstream press and there is no shortage of food venues wanting to get involved. I think the count is edging close to 40!

You can see the full list, including what their vegan week specials are, over on the official Vegan Restaurant Week website.

Congratulations to Emma on a campaign that has the potential to make real change in her community. We all know a lot of people who don’t eat vegan because of availability and ease, so this campaign is valuable in helping to redress those shortcomings across non-vegan venues.

Campaigns such as Vegan Restaurant Week need to take place everywhere. Come on, people. Be active participants and let’s get busy changing the world for the better. We want people to go vegan so it is up to us to make it possible.

A seemingly-small change of a few additional dishes on a menu is often the start of something a lot bigger for non-vegan restaurants. Well done, Emma.

Newcastle vegan restaurant expanding

A wonderful, pioneering vegan café is looking to expand in size and vision but they need our collective strength to do it.

The Painted Elephant is a cosy eatery perched in Newcastle city centre. They serve mouthwatering savoury food and ever since it opened, the restaurant has served as a vital hub for the vegan community in the city. The owners even allowed me to bring live music into their gorgeous venue when I passed through with my Vegan Roadshow.

Amazingly, it is the only 100% vegan restaurant in Newcastle.

The owners of The Painted Elephant have done an exceptional job to not only keep a fledgling restaurant open, but to also make it thrive. It now enjoys a solid following of regular diners that allows the restaurant to pay its overheads, but the plans for expansion are going to need a bit extra.

The owners need to raise £20,000 in order to move on with their plans, which include creating:

  • gourmet vegan food powered by local farmers and producers with a weekly changing, seasonal menu and low food mileage
  • a licensed bar serving infused liquors made from our excess fruits and herbs – nothing wasted
  • home grown herbs and salads cut for the plate
  • handmade vegan cheese on the menu and available to purchase and take home
  • all food waste composted to grow more deliciousness
  • locally foraged ingredients
  • regular themed tasting menu events with many-coursed meals, themed music and decor
  • great alternative music
  • up-cycled decor by local artisans

What the money will pay for:

  • the deposit and a couple of months rent on the new property (separate kitchen and bar area, possibly multiple floors!) to get them started – they’re looking at some of the beautiful railway arches near central station
  • a kitchen made from refurbished appliances and up-cycled fittings
  • growing and composting equipment, including an almost-instant (3 hour) composter for all food waste
  • paint and wall hangings
  • plumbing of sinks, etc
  • beautiful plates, glasses, crockery and more from UK artisans and small businesses
  • creation of new jobs for the local vegan community

This is our chance to support an independent business, help them grow, watch them support local fruit/vegetable producers and celebrate as they create strength, jobs and security in their community.

This is an important campaign and an incredible chance for you to be a part of something very special. Keep a 100% vegan business independent, help people in Newcastle have a vegan centre they can be proud of and, most importantly, save the lives of animals by giving the northeast a truly compassionate alternative.

Vegan paint job

One of my favourite things about being in the vegan community is when people come together to help others.

It happened recently when readers of this blog helped raise funds to get Veg Instead back to trading, it happens daily when millions of vegans join voices to sign petitions like this one and I’m hoping it will happen again to assist a vegan restaurant in the UK with expenses related to redecorating.

Painted Elephant is a vegan restaurant in the Northern UK city of Newcastle. The business owners took a huge personal and professional leap when they decided to open the first 100% vegan eatery in this part of the country and I’m sure it has been tough work to get through these first few months.

But Painted Elephant has survived and is happily still serving up delicious plant-based meals and desserts to appreciative vegans and omnivores alike.

I am grateful for the dedication shown by places such as Painted Elephant and that is why I don’t mind helping financially when I can. They save animals by serving alternatives to meat, eggs and dairy so they deserve a helping hand when they ask for it, in my humble opinion.

The owners of Painted Elephant opened their restaurant on a shoestring budget but have now decided they would like to decorate to ensure the location can compete with every other non-vegan place in the city when it comes to presentation and decor.

They are only asking for £500 to make this happen and I know £1 from 500 people is a realistic target. Let’s get Painted Elephant looking good as a thank you for everything they do for promoting vegan food and animal protection.

If you are not in the position to contribute, you might consider supporting this restaurant by sharing news of the fundraiser.

Extra note: you can join me at Painted Elephant on July 23, 2015 for Vegan Roadshow. Australian vegan band Love Like Hate will be performing a gig inside the restaurant. Book tickets here. (strictly limited space)
