If you have read my book, you will recall the extremely poignant section contributed by Michele Kaplan.

Michele is an incredible activist fighting for better outcomes for animals and disabled people. The feeling of gratitude I have for her contribution to my book has never wavered.

Michele puts a lot of her energy and time into fighting for social justice causes, so it makes sense that when she needs a little bit of support we should rally around.

Following on from a health setback, Michele currently needs some additional at home support while she recovers.

If you know anything about US health care, you’ll know it can be extremely difficult at the best of times.

New vegan menu for Spring

I adore Cafe Van Gogh.

This south London cafe on Brixton Road is one of my favourite places to eat when I’m in the city.

The comfort food is stunning while the portions are generous and the ethos underpinning the restaurant makes it even more appealing.

Cafe Van Gogh is not for profit and is geared towards employing and advancing the careers of young people who struggle to find meaningful and supportive catering employment. It isn’t just a place to eat. It is also a way to contribute positively to your community.

OK. So I love the place.

I’m here today to share the new springtime menu that has just been launched by Cafe Van Gogh.

Vegan food in Gdańsk Poland

Guest post from my amazing friend, Mirel.

I had heard the vegan food in Poland was amazing so when I found a particularly irresistible deal on flights, I gathered up some loved ones and headed to the port town of Gdansk.

We only had limited time during our visit but after narrowing the restaurant choice down to one winner, we headed off to Vegan Pizza Port. The whole menu looked amazing.

It was incredible! Between us, we had the seitan chops served with mash, two absolutely giant portions of lasagne and two different pizzas.

None of us could stop raving about the food. We could see pizza dough being expertly hand thrown in the open kitchen and whicheve cheese they were using was one of the best we’ve ever tasted.

The restaurant itself is lovely; warm and cosy but bright and welcoming too. The staff were really attentive and able to answer any questions we had. It’s well worth visiting Gdansk just to dine at this total gem of a place.

New food at Mooshies

Mooshies on Brick Lane is one of vegan London’s favourite places to eat comfort food.

This announcement of a new menu item is only going to strengthen the love affair.

The east end burger bar has launched a limited edition nacho dish in collaboration with Kinda Co. If you know your artisan cheese, you’ll already know that Kinda Co is one of our regular traders at Hackney Downs Vegan Market and their cheese always sells out.

These nachos are loaded with slow cooked jackfruit, guacamole, jalapeños and Kinda Co cashew cheese.

New vegan food trend launches in London

Two of the biggest names on the London vegan food scene have joined forces to change the face of plant-based comfort food while keeping the roots of veganism at the heart of everything.

Thanks to What The Pitta and Dough Society, you can now say a big hello to the hummus-glazed DÖ-NUT.

Vegan businesses have a well-known history of launching food trends and over the past few years we’ve seen vegan cronuts, brookies, and freakshakes all making headlines.

But it is the DÖ-NUT that is set to completely change the way vegans look at comfort food.

So what is a DÖ-NUT? I asked Cem of What The Pitta to explain the how and what:

We’re so excited to announce that we’ll be collaborating with Dough Society, the tastiest doughnut shop in town, to introduce the strictly limited edition DÖ-NUT. This tantalising sweet and spicy bun features Dough Society’s signature dough with a sticky hummus glaze smothered in hot sauce and is stuffed to the max with vegan döner pieces. It’s the best of everything combined. DÖ-NUT knock it ’til you’ve tried it!

I reached out to Dough Society founder Lauren to find out why she wanted to be a part of such a groundbreaking food launch. Lauren said:

I think that sometimes as vegans we forget about the pure simplicity of hummus. When I spoke with the guys from What The Pitta about a food collaboration, I wanted to make sure we paid due respect to this staple of the vegan food scene. The DÖ-NUT might be seen by some to be just another food fad designed to dazzle, but I believe the inclusion of hummus gives it an authenticity that other trendy vegan food items lack. Hummus is such a huge part of our identity as vegans. What is life without hummus?

The DÖ-NUT is available for a strictly limited time starting April 1, 2018.

Pop up supper club event in London

Here is some news you can eat.

A handful of our regular traders from Hackney Downs Vegan Market have joined forces to bring you a gorgeous-sounding pop up food event.

You will want to book tickets for this right now.

This vegan cheese dining event sounds too good to be true.

Get along to The Grand Howl cafe in E9 on April 19, 2018 to explore four artisan vegan cheese brands, talk with the makers, and enjoy a full French cuisine dinner followed by French pâtisserie.

The night will commence with appetisers based on the I AM NUT OK cashew spreads, followed by a plate of Mushroom Bourguignon and Potato Dauphinois using the stunning cheeses of Black Arts Vegan and Nutkin.

Diners will then be served a platter highlighting the stunning cheeses of Kinda Co. before the dinner is finished off with pâtisserie items by The Sunny Spoon.

Throughout the night you will be able to chat with the makers and hear all about their brands, products and personal journeys.

Of course their cheeses will be available for purchase as well.

New vegan food spot in Sheffield

There is a new vegan food spot in Sheffield and Charley of superstar vegan grocery store Incredible Nutshell has put together this fabulous review. Enjoy:

As you know, it’s a great time for veganism in Sheffield right now, there are new vegan menus and vegan-friendly establishments springing up all the time at the moment.

However, most of the action has been in the south of the city (in and around Sheffield’s ‘Vegan Quarter’) or in the city centre – there have been precious few local options for vegans living in the north of the city. Until now.

Sunshine Deli is an established cafe and takeaway next to the Sheffield Wednesday football ground in Hillsborough. New owners Sarah and Sarah took over a few months ago and have just launched an epic home-cooked vegan menu, including Yorkshire Pudding Wraps (trust me, this is a big deal in Yorkshire!), southern fried chicken, kebabs, pies, full cooked breakfast and more!

They’re keen to develop the vegan menu even further and are happy to hear customers’ suggestions for new dishes.

The cafe is open 7 days a week during the day, plus extra hours on match days. As of this week they’ll also be opening Friday and Saturday evenings until 9pm, to provide some much-needed evening eating out options in the north of the city. The cafe is dog-friendly too.

So if you’re anywhere near Sheffield, or visiting for the football at Hillsborough, go check them out!

Inside look at London’s flagship vegan kebab shop

London really has come along leaps and bounds when we look at vegan advancements.

Independent vegan food businesses are storming the capital and two people on the frontline of this charge have just gone and opened London’s first vegan döner restaurant with its own indoor seating.

What The Pitta is the brainchild of Cem Yildiz and Roj Gul. These friends started selling their irresistible comfort food from a garden shed set up in Shoreditch, moved on to creating a cult following with their two Boxpark locations (Shoreditch and Croydon) and have now outdone themselves by throwing open the doors to the UK’s first ever 100% vegan döner kebab restaurant in Camden.

The rapid success of the two Boxpark locations meant that the only logical step for the two entrepreneurs was to open their own permanent restaurant.

I asked Cem what the new Camden version of What The Pitta means to him and this is what he had to say:

We’re really happy to have secured our first place outside of Boxpark with the continued support of the vegan community. Camden may be becoming another London vegan hub but I see the years to come as an opportunity for us to move into some other major cities around the UK as it’s not just Londoners who want their vegan döner fix!
