Vegan food at a UK airport

Today I am traveling from the Bestival event on the south coast of England all the way up to Glasgow in Scotland, where I am due to host the third annual Glasgow Vegan Beer Fest tomorrow (Sunday August 5, 2018).

Because of the limited amount of time I had to get between events, I opted to take a flight.

Unfortunately I have been stuck at Southampton airport waiting for my delayed Glasgow flight for quite a few hours, so I made the most of my time to hunt down some vegan snacks.

Check out my finds below and click here to buy a last minute ticket to Glasgow Vegan Beer Fest.

Hopefully I’ll see you there!

Vegan business in Sri Lanka

I recently enjoyed a wonderful email exchange with a vegan business owner in Sri Lanka.

Instead of me trying to give you all the details, I’ve asked Tashie Roberts to give you all the inside information on her venture called Smokey’s – The Brownie Bar:

Three and half years ago I became a vegan and because I missed cake and goodies, I learnt to bake vegan brownies. My non-vegan family and friends loved the brownies I baked and many people suggested that I sell a few brownies from home. The rest is history. Smokey’s – The Brownie Bar was born! It took off and people (not just vegans) loved my brownies and it got bigger and I realised I could no longer do it from home. I took a small place and decided to start up my own café. I invested every last cent I have in to opening up the café. Now, even though I do have a regular amount of business coming in from people that order my brownies and cakes for delivery, it isn’t nearly enough to run the café. Sri Lanka is a fairly poor country meaning not many people simply walk into the café off the streets. In the past month (34 days to be exact) that I have been open, I have noticed to my surprise that the majority of customers walking in have been vegan tourists that have found me on HappyCow. I am also the admin of Vegan Sri Lanka, the vegan community here in Sri Lanka where we discuss veganism, help vegan tourists with where to eat, what to eat and how to order, and many other things. The vegan community in Sri Lanka is tiny but there a lot more of us than when we first started our Vegan Sri Lanka journey three years ago. It is growing and we are seeing so much progress in Sri Lanka!

What an amazing story.

We can help Tashie and the vegan movement in Sri Lanka by liking and sharing the Smokey’s Facebook page. You can also follow them on Instagram.

If you are in the area, the exact address of Smokey’s – The Brownie Bar can be seen here thanks to Google Maps.

A vegan weekend in Berlin

My amazing friend Mirel has written this fab guest post about her recent weekend in Berlin.

For more years than I can remember, all I’ve heard is that Berlin is the best vegan destination on the entire planet. This is high praise indeed so when my husband Mark and I were invited to a friend’s wedding in Berlin, I began researching vegan eateries in earnest and visited as many as possible during the short trip.

Our first stop was the Indian Vegetarian restaurant Satyam which was chosen because it was the nearest place to Berlin Tegel Airport! Well, it’s as good a reason as any. The friendly and charming waiter informed us that the thali of the day had just been freshly prepared and was fully vegan. We were instantly sold and opted for a thali each.

They had some unusual combinations that I wouldn’t have chosen from a menu, but which were surprisingly delicious. The tofu and pineapple curry in a coconut sauce didn’t sound particularly appealing but it was the piña colada of curries and I really enjoyed it. The lentil dal was perfect; warming and hearty but not too spicy. The restaurant itself is cosy, clean and has a lovely relaxing atmosphere. A lot of regulars were coming in and the wait staff knew their standard orders which is a true sign of a loyal customer base.

A few hours later it was dinner time and we were hungry again. What better for a Friday night than a kebab? Decision made, we headed to Ostkreuz Station and strolled into Vöner. This tiny little place with a couple of tables inside and a couple more on the pavement has a kitchen in full view of all the customers so you can see exactly how everything is made and there is an impressively large vegan kebab being roasted on a spit behind the counter.

Mark had the voner kebab which was even more impressive than we expected. It’s served in freshly toasted bread which is perfectly crispy on the outside but fluffy in the middle, generously spread with tasty homemade sauces, filled high with fresh salad and chunky strips of flame-roasted seitan. We made the mistake of ordering a portion of chips each and barely managed to finish them. It must have been three potatoes per person!

The two members of staff were really helpful, friendly and clearly have a huge passion for what they’re doing. If you have the chance and a huge appetite, I’d definitely recommend a visit to Vöner.

One restaurant which had shown up consistently in my research was Ataya Caffé, near Prenzlauer Allee Station. I had emailed them in advance to ask if they had a menu available in English, they replied very promptly to say that they didn’t have one as they have a series of rotating specials. They also told me that they serve African Italian fusion which is a combination I had yet to come across, I was intrigued from the start.

We arrived at lunchtime to find that they run a Sunday brunch buffet with an incredible selection of all-vegan awesomeness. Fresh Italian breads sit alongside warming stews of every variety, a biryani, cous-cous, pasta salad, two varieties of hummus, dal, curries, bruschetta, salads, huge chunks of watermelon and even gooey chocolate and banana brownies. The sight of it alone was enough to make me consider moving to Berlin! As an added bonus, it’s served at the very reasonable price of €14 per person. There is also an impressive selection of drinks, fresh smoothies and desserts to choose from if you have space.

We loaded up our plates and sat down. Every single mouthful was utterly delicious. Nothing was mediocre or adequate. We couldn’t believe how good this place was! According to the HappyCow league table, this is the third best vegan restaurant in the world. Having dined there myself, I can say the accolade is well deserved.

This restaurant is run by a husband and wife team who love what they do and are absolutely brilliant at it. I spoke with the owners for a little while and asked if they would consider opening a restaurant in London. If it happens one day, you heard it here first!

I cannot overstate this enough. If you can only visit one vegan restaurant in Berlin – make it Ataya Caffé. Note that it is closed on Mondays and is a cash only venue.

Is there a vegan left who hasn’t heard of the German vegan supermarket chain? I had to pay a visit to Veganz Supermarket during the trip. It’s instantly dizzying; a beautifully thought-out shop fully stocked with absolutely every vegan item you can think of, and more. They have a takeaway food counter, a wall of freezers loaded with savouries and sweets of every kind and there is also a bulk grains and nuts section where people are encouraged to bring in their own containers. It’s a little out of the way but worth the journey if time allows.

Our final meal in Berlin was at Lia’s Kitchen where we each had a burger and chips which were very tasty, absolutely massive and really filling. It’s a laid back eatery with an impressive selection of burgers along with tasty-looking salads and even shakes if you feel so inclined. There is outdoor seating available as well which many customers were taking advantage of. You can pick from a variety of different sauces to top your burger and sweet potato fries are available too.

The staff at Lia’s Kitchen advised us to visit their neighbours for dessert before we headed to the airport so we took a very quick detour to the all-vegan donut shop Brammibal’s Donuts. This is the first fully vegan donut shop in the whole of Europe and it’s easy to see why it has been a success. It’s got a huge glass counter filled to the brim with incredible looking donuts in tempting flavours along with a good selection of drinks.

Conclusion: Berlin is AWESOME!

Vegan food in Gdańsk Poland

Guest post from my amazing friend, Mirel.

I had heard the vegan food in Poland was amazing so when I found a particularly irresistible deal on flights, I gathered up some loved ones and headed to the port town of Gdansk.

We only had limited time during our visit but after narrowing the restaurant choice down to one winner, we headed off to Vegan Pizza Port. The whole menu looked amazing.

It was incredible! Between us, we had the seitan chops served with mash, two absolutely giant portions of lasagne and two different pizzas.

None of us could stop raving about the food. We could see pizza dough being expertly hand thrown in the open kitchen and whicheve cheese they were using was one of the best we’ve ever tasted.

The restaurant itself is lovely; warm and cosy but bright and welcoming too. The staff were really attentive and able to answer any questions we had. It’s well worth visiting Gdansk just to dine at this total gem of a place.

LA book reading

This is a super quick post to say thank you to everyone who came along to my book reading event at Stories book store in Los Angeles this week.

It was a wonderful feeling to see so many happy faces and we enjoyed some truly fantastic conversations.

It has been a dream of mine to have a book out but I never thought I would be presenting it to such wonderful people in a store in Echo Park. I’m still smiling.

It was also exciting for me to find copies of my book available in legendary book store Book Soup in West Hollywood.

This shop is one of the most loved and famous places for books in LA, so I am truly honoured to be in there.

If you are in LA, please visit either of these independent book stores and help keep them alive!

UK vegan food businesses head to LA

The HUGE Eat Drink Vegan beer, food and wine event that takes place in Los Angeles each year is simply legendary.

What started in a parking lot in West Hollywood as the Los Angeles Vegan Beer and Food Festival (the inspiration for our little old beer events in the UK, BTW) is now a super-sized mega event held at the Rose Bowl once a year.

If you ever have the chance to get along to this event, it is mind blowing and you should do it. It is taking place on May 26 in 2018 so you still have time to plan your trip.

For extra incentive, the food line up this year (which usually runs to about 100 food businesses!) includes some of our favourite UK traders as well.

Included in the line up:

I’m super thrilled to see these businesses invited to trade at what is surely the most fabulous and respected vegan event on the planet.

All of these people above have worked relentlessly to promote veganism and have shown deep kindness, commitment and love for our vegan community in the UK.

They deserve their place in the sun.

Vegan in the Canary Islands

Guest blog post by my fabulous friend, Gabi.

Vegan Surprise in the Canaries

So much for my detox holiday. I have just demolished a Jamaican beer stew, some grilled veg with Aioli and instead of dessert a delicious dumpling with mushrooms. So, now it’s just a cortado…I think. The tiramisu looks good though.

The London weather and all the snotty nosed people on the tube were getting to me, so I escaped to Fuerteventura, one of the Canary Islands for a spot of sunshine. Having booked an all-inclusive deal in a tourist resort my food expectations were extremely low and I thought it might be a good opportunity to do a bit of a detox. I thought my options were limited to salad, nuts and fruit with the occasional canary potatoes bathed in red and/or green mojo (delicious by the way).

I was in Corralejo on the very northern tip of the island, a smallish tourist town, with a strong surfer vibe. And it’s got no less than FOUR vegan restaurants! I couldn’t believe it. Particularly since two of these really made this slightly jaded Londoner’s palate sing. The first was Baobab, a little homely family run restaurant that’s open from 11 am – 4pm, so a perfect lunch spot. Home-made bread sandwiches with an array of veggies, spreads, sprouts and tofu. Also, fresh juices and salads. But the stars of the show for me were the specials. The first day I had fried marinated tofu with a potato bake and fresh organic salad, simple, great ingredients and I nearly licked the plate. The second day I couldn’t make up my mind between home-made cashew cheese with figs and other yummy things and some croquettes. The croquettes (Spinach I think, won). Yummy again. Followed by a delicious raw chocolate and pistachio cake. Sitting in the sun, by a square, I was happy. Their English was rather basic so I didn’t get the full lowdown on this family run enterprise.

It was another restaurant though that sounded the death knell to my detox. Past & Future only opened a few months ago, and I ate there four times. And always way too much because I really wanted to try as much as possible. As much as I love street food, it was so nice to sit in a proper restaurant, have good food and wine not get totally fleeced. Even though there are some Indian/Indonesian/Jamaican outliers on the menu, to me the food is European soul food. Proper home-made pasta (Ravioli with truffled cream sauce, really good lasagne), German/Austrian dumplings, fresh crisp salads, Canarian stews, Tiramisu and parfait for dessert.

The restaurant is owned and run by the vivacious polyglot Aida Le Pesqueur who can rattle off her menu in what seems like 15 languages and gave me a bit of an insight into the Canary Island vegan scene. She is helping to organise the island’s first vegan festival on May 19th-20th in the capital Puerto del Rosario. Le Pesqueur moved her restaurant from Cologne to Corralejo last year and credits the arrival of a number of Italian restauranteurs in recent years with the sudden flurry of vegan activity in the town. Her own ambition is either to franchise Past & Future or to open a vegan hotel on the island.

The other two vegan spots are H20, a daytime café which is really good too. It has the standard vegan fare of juices, salads and burgers, and does a full English breakfast, hence I wasn’t as excited. D Sanchez is a burger bar that gets a lot of love online for its fresh food and craft beer, but I didn’t make it there. It does look good from the outside though.

FGV in Los Angeles

Are you in Los Angeles or know someone that is?

I thought I should let you know that I am presenting my book Fat Gay Vegan: Eat, Drink and Live Like You Give a Sh!t in a small informal book reading at Stories of Echo Park.

Stories is one of the coolest book stores on the planet and I’m thrilled to be presenting my first ever book there on Monday March 12, 2018 at 7pm.

Here is a little bit about the event:

Join us on March 12 7PM to meet Sean O’Callaghan aka Fat Gay Vegan. The prolific vegan blogger, activist, and event organiser will be in store to give a short reading and talk about his debut book Fat Gay Vegan: Eat, Drink and Live Like You Give a Sh!t.

The vegan community has grown hugely in the last decade, but for every person joining for ethical reasons, there are as many others who join because of the latest diet trend, food fad, or celebrity bandwagon. Products and politics, lifestyle gurus and companies, all have their own agendas for getting you to go vegan, often related to health and weightloss. Fat Gay Vegan turns these ideas on their heads, and shows how not only can you be fat and vegan, but that weight and health are not at the heart of what veganism is. In its simplest form, veganism is about living a life as free from cruelty as possible.

This means treating animals and people with respect for their lives and wellbeing, and social justice is as core to his work as finding the best vegan cafes around the world. He also extends his compassion to non-vegans, and there is no place for shaming here, only for challenging ideas. His book is a manifesto for kindness.

Sean will be available to sign books after his talk. Come along for some myth-busting, plant-based jokes, and sweet vegan treats!

You can see all upcoming events at Stories BooksandCafe online here.

RSVP and invite friends on the Facebook event.

You can also buy my book online here.

A better vegan airline meal

Here is a quick post to share info that I meant to share about a month ago.

Apologies for the slow posting.

I do have some reasons for being slack, but the most convincing is that I not only moved from London to Mexico City but I also just moved into a new apartment in Mexico City. I have been running around trying to get my living situation sorted.

But enough about me looking for sympathy.

On my way to Mexico City, British Airways served me one of the most satisfying vegan meals I’ve ever had in the air.

Check it out.

I know it might not seem that impressive for regular eating, but as far as in-flight meals go it was superb.

Josh and I both marvelled at how tasty the dish was and it is definitely the most planned and considered meal I’ve had on an airplane. Flavoursome and packed with tofu and vegetables. I’d eat it everyday.

Good stuff!
