One of my favourite things about the vegan movement is seeing people come up with creative ways to support animals while helping more people discover delicious plant-based food.
For example, these incredible kits for growing your own lion’s mane mushrooms!

This latest example of vegan food ingenuity comes from the wonderful team at Surge Sanctuary, who have teamed up with Marvellous Mushrooms and Unity Diner to launch a Lion’s Mane Mushroom Grow Kit that raises money for the rescued residents of the sanctuary.
For £25, supporters can get their hands on a 3kg ready-to-fruit mushroom block capable of producing up to 1kg of fresh Lion’s Mane mushrooms across two or three harvests. The kits are designed to be easy to grow at home, with the first flush often appearing in around 20 days. All you need is a little patience and a spray bottle.
If you have never tried Lion’s Mane before, this could be the perfect introduction. The mushroom is prized for its meaty texture and delicate flavour, making it ideal for everything from burgers and pasta dishes to stir fries and steaks. Each kit also includes access to Unity Diner’s famous Lion’s Mane Steak recipe via a QR code.
Best of all, 100% of profits from every kit sold go directly towards providing food, shelter and lifelong care for the animals at Surge Sanctuary.
I love seeing projects like this because they connect people with food in a hands-on way while supporting a sanctuary doing vital work for animals who deserve safety, compassion, and a second chance.

And if you want to taste lion’s mane prepared by experts, don’t forget that I am hosting a fundraising supper club for Surge Sanctuary at Unity Diner on Monday 22 June. The star of the main course will be lion’s mane mushrooms, giving guests the perfect chance to experience just how spectacular this ingredient can be while raising money for a truly worthwhile cause.
