Vegan Cuisine in Copenhagen

I recently found out about a vegan restaurant named MADENITALY in Copenhagen.

I have not actually eaten there yet, but after hearing the story behind the restaurant, I immediately wanted to tell people about it.

Read more below.

MADENITALY is a fully vegan Italian restaurant located right in the middle of Copenhagen’s old meatpacking district. Yes, really. Surrounded by a neighbourhood historically dedicated to meat, this vegan spot is serving handmade pasta, pizza romana, antipasti, desserts, cocktails, and all sorts of mouthwatering plant-based cuisine to locals and tourists alike.

The restaurant was founded by chef Eva De Masi, who was born and raised in Rome with an Italian father and Danish mother. After becoming disillusioned with politics in Italy, she moved to Denmark at the age of 39 and eventually launched a pizza romana stall inside Copenhagen street food destination Papirøen back in 2014. It was apparently an instant success.

After various twists, turns, closures, relocations, and pandemic chaos, MADENITALY reopened in 2025 as a fully vegan restaurant with around 90 indoor seats and almost as many outside.

And perhaps my favourite detail of all is that a huge number of customers apparently sit down without even realising the restaurant is vegan. I love a covert vegan success story!

According to the team, many first time visitors struggle to believe the food is entirely plant-based.

The kitchen focuses on fresh pasta, pizza romana, homemade vegan ricotta, house made ‘nduja, desserts, and cocktails. It sounds sensational.

This is my favourite kind of restaurant. Delicious food that is creative and well-planned by someone who has a passion for it… and they are doing it for the animals!

Copenhagen has now moved even higher on my list of places to visit in the future.

You can book a table on the MADENITALY website and follow them on Instagram.
