Alternative Vegan Christmas Dinner

You might have seen a few days ago when I blogged about not being a fan of Christmas.

If you missed the post, you can read online here.

Knowing about my anti-Christmas stance you might be wondering what do I eat when everything is closed? Most Christmas Days of the past I have simply cooked a a meal in my own home, however I have become curious about restaurants that remain open on the day serving food that isn’t what a lot of people would consider traditional Christmas cuisine.

This year I was in Brisbane, Australia and was fortunate to discover that U-Tong Vegan Thai Restaurant was open on Christmas Day. It was a no-brainer to get along for a meal!

See the photos below.

U-Tong is in the northern suburb of Clayfield, just a few minutes drive out of the centre of Brisbane city.

My group ordered big so let’s take a look at what we got.

The side menu at U-Tong is fabulous and our table was stacked with fried bread with peanut dipping sauce, satay skewers, taro spring rolls, tempura vegetables, and chicken and fries.

The main dishes were equally impressive.

We enjoyed fried rice, sweet and sour chicken, and mock duck curry. All of this was delicious and the potions large.

Rice was ordered separately and I was thrilled to have the option of brown rice with my sweet and sour chicken. Am I the only brown rice fan?!

U-Tong also has a wonderful mocktail menu and a few dessert options including ice cream and jelly and banana fritters.

Of course U-Tong was perfect for our group not celebrating Christmas, but it is suitable all year round for any holidays and celebrations you are looking to ignore!

Brisbane is a surprisingly vegan-friendly destination filled with food stands, restaurants, bakeries, and even a vegan grocery store. If you have the chance to visit in the future, I highly recommend it.
