What do you know about animal sanctuaries and how often do you think of them?
Animal sanctuaries are places built on compassion and determination. They are often the last hope for animals who have been mistreated, neglected, or simply unwanted. Sanctuaries give these animals a forever home when the world has decided it has no use for them.

The people who run these places are nothing short of legends. I don’t know how they do it. It takes endless energy, money that never quite seems to stretch far enough, and an unshakeable belief in doing the right thing. They are up at dawn mucking out, feeding, fixing broken fences, and giving comfort to creatures who’ve already seen too much hurt. It is emotional work that asks so much, but still they carry on. If you have ever met someone running a sanctuary you’ll know they are special people.
What always moves me most about sanctuaries is that they are places of second chances. Cows that were destined never to grow old get to live out their natural lives. Chickens that have been kept in unimaginable conditions suddenly have space to stretch and flap. Pigs who’ve been pushed around all their lives get to roll in the mud or hay without anyone stopping them. It is dignity. It is kindness. It is what every living being deserves.
Of course, sanctuaries need us just as much as the animals need them. They cannot run on goodwill alone. They rely on donations, volunteers, and community support. Which is why I would love for you to join me for a very special evening.
On Monday 1st September, 2025 I’ll be at Unity Diner in London for a fundraising dinner in aid of Surge Sanctuary. If you’re not familiar with them, Surge is an 18 acre sanctuary in the rural Midlands of England. They work tirelessly to give a safe haven to abused and unwanted animals and they are a cause very close to my heart.

You can come along, eat delicious food, chat with friendly people, and know that your night out is helping keep this vital work going. It promises to be a wonderful evening and I’d be thrilled to see some of you there.

If you can’t make it along on Monday night but would still like to support Surge, make a donation on their website.
