Cheap vegan curry range in UK supermarket

My wonderful friend Mirel (click on her name to see the MOST fab vegan baked goods) sent me the following photos of some tasty-looking vegan curries she spotted in her local Asda and I must say, I am super impressed.

Mirel mentioned that these were priced at the ridiculously-inexpensive price of £1.50 each. I can’t believe how cheap they are!

It is lovely to see a matar paneer made with tofu and check out that okra. Gorgeous.

Has anyone tried these? What did you think?

  1. Yum! and which Asdas have people spied them in? I

  2. Have only tried the Matar Paneer so far and that was really tasty. Looking forward to enjoying the rest. Don’t know how they do it for that price.

  3. Ooh, these are available online from the Asian Cookshop (http://www.theasiancookshop.co.uk/indian-food–ready-meals-152-c.asp) – just be careful only to select the vegan ones (ingredients listed on each page. Although they are £1.95, they are currently on a ‘Boy One Get One Free’ offer & also free express delivery if you spend more than £29.99.

  4. Really love this. Awesome dishes. All are yumiiii….!

  5. Hello,

I am not sure if my previous comment went through or not. If it did, please ignore this one.

I bought the Bombay Biryani in Tesco in Janaury, it is labelled ‘vegetarian’ (I read the ingredients and the contents were actually vegan, according to what was listed on the packet). To my horror it had massive lumps of chicken in it. I have complained to Tesco, who say they can’t do anything because it’s not their own range. They told me I should hear back from the manufacturer, Ashoka Foods, but 2 months have gone by and I have heard nothing. I have tweeted my complaints, see here: https://twitter.com/claudieclaws/status/693013303552053248.

Am really upset by Tesco’s lack of action and Ashoka’s lack of response. I have been vegan for almost 20 years so to acidentally ingest a great big piece of chicken was really upsetting and disgusting (I thought it was sweet potato at first). I would love to buy the vegan paneer but there’s no way I am going to because there is obviously a problem with their production line.

    • Hi Claudia,

I am a life long vegetarian – looking to become vegan. I have eaten the Ashoka Bombay Biryani (as well as the rest of their range) and can tell you from my experience that there isn’t any chicken in it. What you probably saw were pieces of potato or cauliflower which are listed in the ingredients.

Ashoka also seem to be changing many of their recipes to become suitable for vegans, and making them much healthier in the process.

  6. They are lovely you can get them at tesco to!
