You’re hiding, underneath the smoke in the room

Rushing the Homegrown Smoker food truck

During a recent trip to Portland to attend Vida Vegan Con 2011, I was overwhelmed by vegan food choices. Every restaurant appeared to cater thoughtfully to my type, no matter if they were a veggie establishment or not. The picturesque city was packed wall to wall with cruelty-free dining options.

By far my favourite dining experience was the Homegrown Smoker food truck. Actually, it was so stunning I dined with them three days running. Everything I ate was tasty like I’ve never known, the staff were incredibly welcoming and I adored the concept of ordering my meal from a mobile kitchen parked up on a city sidewalk.

I must warn you the following pictures could lead to growling tummies. I make no apologies.

In my opinion, the crowning glory of Homegrown Smoker is their Mac-NoCheese. I don’t think I have ever tasted anything so instantaneously delicious. The moment it hit my tongue, I felt like crying tears of joy. It was creamy, savoury and smoky. I am sad I don’t have it here with me now.

Mac-NoCheese with Russet Fryz

If the above isn’t enough to kickstart a search engine frenzy for Portland flights, this next meal will get you there. On this blog, I do attempt to convey my reactions to food with some degree of level-headedness. I cannot do that when talking about this next meal.

The SloSmoMoFo is heaven in a bun. The famous Smoked Soy Curls are succulent pieces of tasty wonder. I would walk for days to just see them again. These gems were crammed into a toasted bun with a fabulous chipotle coleslaw. As if these flavours weren’t enough, the whole ensemble was topped off with a lip-smacking BBQ sauce.

During my visit, I opted to have my sandwich served with a side of the mac and a cup of cold lemonade. My take on this meal? Perfection. My advice to you when it comes to Homegrown Smoker? Go there. Now.

  1. […] You’re hiding, underneath the smoke in the room […]

  2. I couldn’t agree with you more! The Macnocheeto (macnocheese, soy curls, beans, BBQ sauce and peppers all wrapped up in a tortilla all wrapped up in a tortilla like a burrito) rocked my world! I went back to Homegrown on my last day in Portland, to try the deep-fried Oreo cookies, but they were out. Probably for the best 😉

    • JL! I missed out on the cookies too. I certainly need them less than you do. Did you spot yourself in my photo? xx

  3. Ok, that’s it. I need to find an excuse to go to Portland asap.

  7. That mac-no-cheese is the most amazing thing ever, closely followed by the mint lemonade and ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING!
