Over the moor
Sometimes you have to go the distance for a quality meal.
When I lived in Australia, I would travel from Brisbane to the Gold Coast for stunning vegan pizza at Threeworlds Organic Cafe. My Los Angeles vacations don’t seem complete without a road trip to my favourite Native Foods Cafe in Costa Mesa. These meals are worth doing the miles for and now I can add another destination I’m willing to travel to for vegan dining… Glossop.
Glossop is a country town situated just over 20km/15 miles east of Manchester. It is steeped in history and evidence dating back to Roman and Saxon times can still be found. Windswept moors rise up around the town and a short trip by car will take you to the grim scene of the infamous murders on Saddleworth Moor. Visitors shop the local fresh markets while fans of dark comedy program The League of Gentlemen delight in spotting locations in nearby Hadfield.
There are plenty of reasons to visit Glossop, but I’m about to give you the only one you need. The Globe.
This traditional pub looks inconspicuous from the roadside, but get a look at the menu and you will not believe your eyes. Every dish served by the kitchen at The Globe is vegan. Let me just go over that once more. There is a traditional pub in a country town serving a 100% vegan food menu.
Anna, Josh and I could barely decide what to order during our visit. The menu is extensive, inexpensive and tantalising. We were beside ourselves with joy and couldn’t stop grinning. It was like a dream come to life.
Anna got the ball rolling by ordering the Chilli deluxe with tofu and rice. I understand things are less expensive when you get out of the big city but this amazing dish set her back just £3.90.
The tapas-sized bowls were crammed full of tasty, filling chilli. The tofu chunks and brown rice expertly complimented this savoury delight. But don’t place your order just yet. As I’ve heard a lot of well-dressed, middle-aged people saying lately, “It gets better”.
Josh was tempted by the Curry deluxe with tofu and rice. Once again the unbelievable price was £3.90. Josh was completely blown away by the tasty dish, once again served with a load of rice.
I was next. I need to preface this description by saying no matter how colourful my praise is, I don’t believe I could ever truly describe how happy I was to eat it.
My Sausage, chips and onion gravy dish was the stuff of FGV fantasy. It was as if The Globe somehow got into my chubby, queer brain and unearthed the secret to my happiness. The Fry’s Vegetarian sausage and chunky chips were lovingly smothered in the tastiest gravy I’ve enjoyed in a long time.
As if these dishes weren’t enough, my group ordered in a few sides for good measure. After my main only set me back £2.60, I thought things couldn’t go lower. The prices for the sides were so low it was almost obscene. Our naan bread was 70p, as was the samosa. The curly fries were a lowly £1.00. These prices are well beneath affordable!
We were all beyond satisfied by our ridiculously tasty food but not enough to pass up the opportunity to taste the home made vegan ice cream on offer. I am a bit hazy when it comes to recalling specific flavours, but the photos should get the message across just fine.
I can barely believe this blog post myself, so I understand if it is all a bit much for you to take in as well. The Globe serves stunning vegan food that won’t even come close to breaking the bank. They host live music events including a weekly drop in open mic/jam session. The staff are over the top friendly, warm and welcoming.
If you are ever in the area, you must call in for a meal. If you are not close by, go anyway. The journey will be easily justified.

Daaamn! That looks awesome, if only it wasn’t a 4 hour & 26 min drive from my house…yeah, I google mapped it!
Pick me up on the way! xx
This makes me want to go back!! The two ice-cream flavours that I can recall were maple-pecan and coconut. Both were truly out-of-this-world delicious!!!
Let’s go!
If that’s not a reason to visit the UK I don’t know what is!
Well folks I’m taking my parents there on Sunday so this makes up for not making the potluck. The ice cream was totally out of this world, truly scrumptious! I loved the fact even the non vegan locals were happily chomping away on the tasty home-cooked food!
The place was packed to the rafters, wasn’t it?!?! Have fun on Sunday.
This makes me so happy 🙂 My boyfriend went to uni in Manchester so we often go to visit, the train to Glossop (anyone else think this is an amazing name?!) only takes 30mins and it’s a 6min walk from the station, winner!
