Zero waste vegan market for London

London will soon welcome its first ever vegan, zero waste market.

Set to take place between 10:00am and 5:00pm on Saturday September 29, 2018 at the beautiful palm tree filled Conservatory (at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel, Kensington), Zero Mkt London will involve zero animal products, zero single-use plastics and zero waste. Everything will be edible, reusable, recyclable or compostable. Guests will have an array of stalls to explore, ranging from vegan food and drink, eco lifestyle products, and sustainable clothing items.

Abigail Penny and James Morgan – founders of the market – describe this as a “celebration, where together we can bask in plant-based goodness, explore sustainable products, and begin to live more consciously”.

When asked what inspired them to set up the event, they added: “As consumers we can choose to have a positive impact on this world. We’re on a journey of discovery ourselves and want to share our experience with others. Animal agriculture, non-recyclable plastics, and throwaway fashion each have devastating impacts on our environment, so we hope that by bringing exciting alternatives to our community we can empower and equip others to change their habits and perspectives too!”

Zero Mkt London has partnered with City Harvest who will redistribute surplus food to London’s homeless community and any profit will be donated to Animal Equality, a leading animal protection organisation.

Zero Mkt London founders recognise that many stallholders will need to travel to the venue, so they will be planting trees as part of a carbon offsetting mission.

Stallholders will be announced nearer the time – keep an eye out and follow the handle Zero Market London on Instagram and Facebook.

Surplus food pop up event in Bristol

Anna just got in touch with me to let me know about a new vegan café venture she is launching. Café Surplus is part café, part campaign and part awareness-raising venture about food waste as the café will be stocked using surplus produce from local shops and businesses.

Anna is holding a party to launch the brand on 7th June, 2018 in Bristol (you can buy tickets online here).

A little bit about the event in Bristol:

Come along for an evening of food, drink and feel-good socialising. The fully vegan buffet will be sourced using surplus food collected from local shops, markets and supermarkets. There will be plenty to eat but the exact menu will be decided on the day. Ticket price covers all you can eat, a (non-alcoholic) cocktail on arrival, venue hire, staff wages and an evening full of fun and good vibes.

Tickets are just £10. Book now.

Also look out for Anna and Cafe Surplus to show up in London soon after the Bristol launch. There are plans to open a permanent location in the capital.

You can follow the venture on Facebook and Twitter.

Vegan mayo made from aquafaba

Here is some news that might just float your boat.

Rubies in the Rubble is a condiment-making business focussed on making use of fruit and vegetables that would otherwise be headed to the waste chute.

Yep, they use ugly or unwanted produce to make world-class preserves and chutneys, which in turn they sell on to hungry people like you.

The product I think you will be most excited by in the Rubies range is the aquafaba mayo they make.

Am I right?

In case you don’t know, aquafaba is the term used to describe the water/brine leftover from a tin of chickpeas. Traditionally, this would be thrown away but crafty vegans have found ways to turn this into edible foodstuff.

This includes meringue, buttercream frosting, and mayo. The aquafaba aerates when whipped or beaten.

Rubies in the Rubble now sell their original aquafaba mayo and a chipotle version. Check them out below.

You can buy your own jars of this unique product via the Rubies in the Rubble online shop.

Make sure you check out the rest of their range as well. It is all vegan! Follow Rubies in the Rubble on Instagram.
