Vegan Food in Brasov Romania

Over the past few weeks, every time I would mention that I was soon to be visiting Romania people would respond that I would starve as a vegan.

Well, today I had a very satisfying meal in the city of Brasov that proved them all wrong.

Vegasmo is a plant-based restaurant located in the old town section of Brasov and that wasn’t the only place to get food.

I’m not going to lie and pretend there are wall to wall vegan eateries in Brasov, but I ate extremely well in Vegasmo and bought a bunch of vegan groceries from various supermarkets and health stores.

It’s not a vegan wasteland by any means.

Our meal today in Vegasmo included a super-stacked bean burger with pickles, lettuce, and tangy mayo, jackfruit salad, smashed butter beans with caramelised onions and fresh bread, and fresh juices.

All of this set us back about 30 quid and it was all delicious.

I was thrilled with this vegan meal, but now the bad news.

Vegasmo is not a completely vegan spot. All of the savoury food is vegan but some of the desserts and smoothies contain honey.

A similar thing happened when I visited Budva in Montenegro. The honey in desserts meant the only veggie spot in the city was almost vegan. That restaurant and Vegasmo in Brasov today told me they considered their menus to be vegan.

Can anyone from these countries give insight if this is a common understanding of veganism? Is honey acceptable to vegans?

Apart from ‘honeygate’, I highly recommend Vegasmo in Brasov. Click here to visit the website.
