Vegan Donuts in London… But There’s a Catch

Some good news for Londoners looking for vegan AND gluten free donuts.

Hopstop Donuts is a newish donut trader appearing at markets and events around the capital and today I (hop)stopped by their stall in Upmarket food hall on Brick Lane.

Vegan and Gluten Free Donuts by Hopstop

Vegan donuts have been increasingly easier to find around the UK thanks to mainstream stores such as Greggs, Crosstown, and even Coop supermarkets all selling them regularly. I think you can even get a couple of regular vegan flavours in those Krispy Kreme stands.

But what isn’t as easy to find is a donut option that is both vegan AND gluten free.

Well, Hopstop has changed all that with their market stall frying up fresh donuts that are both vegan and gluten free.

Vegan Donuts with Toppings

While this is a welcome addition to the London food scene, I do find it quite odd that some of the optional toppings offered by Hopstop are not vegan.

The business shouts about the donuts being vegan but approximately half of the sauces offered as optional toppings are not plant-based. I know I’ve been on my soap box recently when it comes to vegan businesses letting us down, but the decision to have non-vegan sauces when creating them actually all to be vegan would be so simple leaves me baffled.

If feels like such a missed opportunity to create a truly inclusive experience. The founders obviously see the attraction of promoting the vegan suitability of their donuts, so why wouldn’t they make all the sauces used for toppings plant-based? It wouldn’t take anything away from what they are doing but it would certainly make vegan consumers feel better about buying the sweet treats.

It feels like such a small change that could make a huge difference to Hopstop. What do you think? Do you think it would be a clever decision to go all in on the veganism when it comes to the toppings?
