Why Do I Record a Podcast That Not Many People Consume?

For more than 15 years I have written online with purpose.

My blog has always been about promoting veganism, supporting independent business, and championing social justice causes. My social media platforms are an extension of that work. I have written for news sites. I have organised events and promoted them online.

I have used the Internet as a tool to contribute something meaningful to the outside world and my communities.

I enjoy writing, but most of what I do online sits somewhere between work and activism. Most of the time it is a combination of both. It carries responsibility, has intention, and is outward facing.

Then I started a podcast and for the first time in a long time, I created something primarily for myself.

Each week I sit down with my best friend Josh, who also happens to be my former partner of 20 years, and we chat. That is it. We talk about pop culture, politics, veganism, mental health, things that interest us, and things that annoy us. It is unserious and VERY low effort. It has no zero strategy. We just happen to record the conversation and pop it online.

Our friends and family watch and sometimes they comment. We have a small but lovely group of regular listeners. Our YouTube views land somewhere between 100 and 700 each week. We have just released episode 82.

And I am genuinely happy with it all.

If 10 people watched, I would still be recording these episodes because they are first and foremost for my own enjoyment. There is no pressure for it to be good, no expectation of growth, no monetisation plan, and no performance metrics attached to my self worth.

After years of creating online for impact, reach, and contribution, this small, joyful project feels like an indulgence in the best possible way.

Doing something regularly that is just for me awesome.

If you spend a lot of your time creating, leading, or advocating online, I highly recommend carving out one small corner of the Internet that exists purely for your own enjoyment.
