Sometimes the most magical discoveries are the ones you aren’t even looking for and my trip to south London today had one of these unexpected surprises in store for me… of the plant-based variety!

I was in Herne Hill today for work and this pocket of South London certainly delivers when it comes to atmosphere.
It’s a proper neighbourhood spot with a local vibe. You’ve got tree-lined streets and independent businesses. It looks like the kind of area where dogs are well-behaved and the fruit shop owner probably knows your name. A bit on the posh side.
As I had a few minutes to spare before my meeting, I found myself wandering past a restaurant with a name that made me stop in my tracks.
Peachy Goat.
I smiled to myself and thought two things. 1. The name sounded a bit like a drag queen name and 2. Wouldn’t it be a treat if this place had something vegan on the menu?
Imagine my joy when I walked over for a peek and realised the entire menu was plant-based. Not a token vegan dish in sight. Not a sprinkle of dairy on the specials. Just a full-blown celebration of vegan deliciousness tucked into this leafy London corner.
Peachy Goat is giving the sort of menu that feels both comforting and adventurous. You’ve got aubergine parmigiana sitting pretty alongside roasted garlic miso focaccia. There’s orrechiette tossed through wild garlic basil pesto with toasted pine nuts and a generous dusting of vegan parmesan. Their potato gnocchi is doing the most with spring greens, crème fraîche and confit shallots.
And if you’re the type of diner who wants a burger experience, they’ve got two offerings plus bonus points for the gluten free bun option.
Also notable was the sticky toffee pudding with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream. Mini Biscoff-stuffed Italian doughnuts. A dark chocolate delice with all the bells and whistles like hazelnut praline and chocolate clusters. It’s giving fancy, it’s giving indulgent, and best of all, it’s giving vegan.
AND if you’re the sort of diner who likes to pair your cake with a cocktail, Peachy Goat seems to have a gorgeous lineup of wines, beers and mixed drinks to match.
Even though I didn’t get to eat there today, I left feeling absolutely giddy. I love those accidental vegan discoveries that remind me our compassionate world is growing and thriving in the most unexpected places. Peachy Goat is now firmly on my must-visit list and you can bet I’ll be heading back soon.
To quote Kath Day-Knight, “I like what I see!”.
