Vegan mince pies

It is the time of year when people start eating things they would otherwise not consider eating.

Take the humble fruit mince pie as an example.

This unusual blend of dried fruits, spices, sugar and pastry is a staple at the end of the year. People eat them as snacks, buy them to go with their cup of tea and even give boxes of the things to friends and family. Fruit mince pies are everywhere but only as we approach the frenzy of Christmas. If people love these things so dearly, why aren’t they eaten year round?

Now one of the biggest coffee shop chains in the UK has joined the festive food frenzy by selling a vegan version of this traditional snack.

I was hanging out in the Eurostar terminal on my way to Paris earlier today when the mood for food hit my belly. The usual suspects were offered up such as ready salted crisps and… well, that was all I could find until I remembered Caffè Nero usually bring out a vegan fruit mince pie for the end of the year.

I picked up two pies for the train journey and they were tasty enough, although I’m not sure I am 100% sold on the combination of ingredients.

What do you all think? Do you like fruit mince pies? Have you eaten the pies from Caffè Nero?

  1. Are you dissing our traditional Christmas fare?

  2. If I could buy mince pies all year round, I would eat them all the time!! We don’t have a cafe nerro here, so I’m still trying to track down a vegan mince pie! I think I may have to roll up my sleeves and just make my own.

  3. I love them. (Much better than bread covered in hundreds & thousands!).

I am partial to a mince pie but the Caffe Nero ones are particularly good, especially if they warm them up a bit.

  4. The Gallery Cafe will be serving up vegan mince pies soon enough 🙂

  5. I love the Cafe Nero ones and the combination of ingredients can’t be faulted for me. And I like the size of them and the open top with the star on, and the really classy brown greaseproof paper dish it sits in. I ate it with Oatly cream. Woof woof.

  6. Costa is doing a very nice and very large vegan mince pie.
