News you can eat December 2013

Finally getting around to posting my December 2013 vegan news round up on January 3rd.

Hope I didn’t keep you waiting too long. I have included some extra tasty pieces of news as my way of saying sorry.

Enjoy!

Vegan truffles

Vegan truffles

Hipo Hyfryd is a truffle company based in Cardiff, hence the Welsh-looking name. These truffles are the pinnacle of decadence, with the chocolate coating hiding rich, irresistible centres. All of the flavours I have tried have been outstanding, including the divine maple syrup flavour shown above. The company is completely vegan and operate under ethically-aware and environmentally-sensitive principles. Buy these truffles online!

Oriental supermarket

During a recent ramble along the central London street Queensway, I chanced upon this marvellous Asian grocery store. You can find an incredible array of vegan ingredients inside, including tempeh, noodles, tofu and soup mixes. Read about my visit here.

Vegan coconut ice

I love presents, even more so if I am on the receiving end. I was recently gifted this cute pink box filled with vegan coconut ice. The Mr. Stanley’s brand has apparently been around for a long time, but this was my first encounter with their goodness. Thanks to Zenith for the gift. I could eat this every day of my life.

I have been raving about Koshari Street to anyone who will stand still long enough. It is probably the tastiest vegan food option in central London. Every element and ingredient works in perfect harmony to create an irresistible pot of delight. Read more here.

Just add water

Just add water

I recently tried this hearty nut roast by Artisan Grains and it was easy to make, inexpensive and tasty. The dry nut roast mixture comes with a cardboard baking tray meaning all you need to do is add water and pop it into the oven. This is one of two flavours by the company that also sells a range of ready to eat grains and seeds. Check them out online.

Polenta recipe by Leigh Drew

Polenta recipe by Leigh Drew

Josh and I were recently sent a copy of the brand new cookbook Veganissimo! Beautiful Vegan Food by Leigh Drew. Leigh and Josh used to work together in a vegan cafe in Sydney, Australia so it was wonderful to hear news of this new recipe collection. The above polenta is one of the dishes we have made from the book and you can read Josh’s review of the title here.

Sweet & sticky

Sweet & sticky

No tricks or funny business here. This vegan bottle of sauce is exactly what it states on the label. We used it to smother homemade seitan and the result was lip-smacking. Get into Sainsbury’s to stock up for the long, dark months ahead.

Vegan ice cream by the cup

Oddono’s is another recent find I cannot stop talking up. Check my recent post to discover why this chain of gelato shops is my new best friend. Your taste buds will be wild with anticipation.

Vegan ale

Vegan ale

I love beer and I love beer even more when it has the word vegan printed loudly and proudly on the front label.  The Stroud Brewery is a pioneer in the world of organic and vegan beer. Their craft brewing process is responsible for some of the most drinkable beverages in the country. Check them out online. This bottle of Maris Otter Vintage Ale was served to me recently at London Vegan Drinks. It went down very smoothly, indeed.

Vegan cheese powder

This final news item isn’t a recommendation, rather a request for feedback from your kind selves. Has anyone tried this Free & Easy dairy free cheese flavour sauce? I spotted it recently in Holland & Barrett but wasn’t convinced enough to purchase. Should I take the risk?

  1. Happy New Year! I’d love to have a decent Asian supermarket closer to home. Living in the countryside has its disadvantages too 😉
The cheese sauce has been around for a long time but they have recently redesigned their labels. I have used it in the past but always adapt it by adding e.g. some good vegetable stock and a little dijon mustard. Good in cauliflower cheese and for a quick sauce to top off a lasagne.

  2. I am not a fan of that cheese mix and I find it far too sweet. It’s a shame but I do much prefer a home-made bechamel sauce with nutritional yeast/salt/mustard powder/paprika as a cheesey substitute and it’s pretty easy (this recipe is my base http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/2007/10/easy-macaroni-and-cheeze.html)
Good round-up. Now hungry and inspired!

  3. I tried the cheese sauce and found it watery, didn’t like the flavour and it wasn’t really that cheesy.

  4. I tried that Free & Easy cheese years ago when I first went vegan. Tried it again a few months back and either they’ve changed it or I’ve got used to better products. It was too sweet. I needed to a lot of nooch and still wasn’t impressed

  5. No don’t bother with the cheese sauce mix, it’s absolutely terrible!
