Keep it kosher

I don’t plan my eating around religious concerns, unless you consider indiscriminate vegan overeating a religion. My food consumption, like all areas of my life, exists outside organised religion.

But my food atheism certainly doesn’t prohibit me from benefiting from belief systems that instruct devotees to separate their animal products when eating.

Enter Kosher Kingdom of North London.

Kosher Kingdom of Golders Green

Kosher is a system for producing and consuming food that is incredibly confusing to an atheist like me. A very basic way for kosher to be viewed is that dairy and meat can’t be mixed… and that is my ill-informed take on just one of the many, many rules surrounding kosher food. Wanna know more about kosher? Go to Wikipedia, pack a lunch.

These rules have lead to a massive market for dairy free cheese products that are suitable for vegans, as well as plant-based meats, and Kosher Kingdom in North London is a true hotspot for these items.

During a recent shopping expedition to the religiously-inspired supermarket, I was blown away by the sheer number of vegan products available. I loaded up an entire basket with cookies, sausages, corn puffs, chocolate drops, deli slices and more.

My vegan stash from Kosher Kingdom

The crowning glory of Kosher Kingdom is the collection of plant-based meats they stock. For years I have longed for the day when I would see a decent range of Tofurky products on a UK shelf and now my greedy, non-religious prayers have been answered by this kosher grocery store. This range of cruelty-free meat is some of the best food on the planet… hot dogs, hickory smoked deli slices, Italian sausages… the list goes on.

And of course no showing of vegan products would be complete without a huge selection of Fry’s Vegetarian frozen meats. Kosher Kingdom doesn’t disappoint on this front, either.

If you feel like taking part in a huge vegan shopping spree, get down to Kosher Kingdom as soon as you can. Big props must certainly go to Mehadrin Wholesale Ltd who have been the people to finally get Tofurky to the UK in a big way. If you are a retailer, it would make a lot of sense to get in touch with that distributor and stock the products yourself. That’s just what London’s vegan boutique Vx has done!

  1. I’ve also heard that Mehadrin are considering importing the frozen Tofurky pizzas made with Daiya cheese so I’d urge all vegans out there to contact them and let them know there’s a demand!!

  2. Hey! I’m from the other side of the world and going to London in December/January. Wanna go here, but just for the heads up, is it clear things are vegan by the packaging or do I need to be studied up on what kosher and parve really mean?

    • Some things say vegan. Some you just need to read the ingredients. All Tofurky and Fry’s products are vegan. You won’t have any trouble.

  3. Great news. Can you share which is your most favoured Tofurky and Fry’s products? Thanks.

    • The Tofurky hickory smoked deli slices are phenomenal. Fry’s traditional sausages always have me coming back for more!

  4. I am on route… hahah. Look forward to trying these. Have a wonderful weekend!

  5. This is the SECOND blog post I have seen on this place! I think that’s a sign….!

  6. There is now a new website http://www.sabeny.com which sell kosher food and deliver across the Uk. They are still new and don’t yet have such a large selection, but they are around 20% cheaper then kosher kingdom are, and they are continuously adding new products. I have stopped buying from kosher kingdom and buy online now..
