A long time ago, I hosted a pop up supper club with a talented food creator named Indira. Do you remember?
The night was a celebration of pies and every attendee was bowled over by her delicious creations.
Time has flown by since that tasty night back in October 2013 but I have some extremely exciting news to make the memories of Indira’s outstanding food come flooding back.
Do you live, work or travel in the King’s Cross area? If you said yes, start licking your lips.
Club Mexicana is a new 100% vegan street food endeavour that is currently popping up every Wednesday as part of the Kerb market on Granary Square just a short stroll from King’s Cross station. You might recall the stall cut its chops as a pop up venture in the Black Cat Cafe across several Saturday nights a few months back.
Check out the photos below to be impressed by the stunning taco, tortilla chips and soup tray on offer from the market stall. The fillings rotate week to week but you will always find a combination of either BBQ pulled jackfruit, beer-marinated seitan, smokey black beans & potatoes and tequila drunken black beans.
How fab does it look?
Have you heard the one about the vegetarian food stall on Leather Lane called Killer Tomato? Sorry, there isn’t a punchline as this is no joke.
Get to Leather Lane.
UPDATE As of late 2014, Killer Tomato now serves meat. Read more here*
Do you like a hot sandwich stuffed with hearty filling and smothered in spicy sauce. Yes? Here you go, then. Killer Tomato food stall has got what you want. Owner/operator Matt serves up Mexican inspired, meat free handhelds during the working week on this bustling market street and if you ask him nicely, he will point out his vegan options.
I fell in love with his Drowned Sandwich during my visit. The baguette featured fresh avocado, delectable refried beans with chipotle, crunchy radish and lashings of chile de arbol sauce. Nobody in the UK does a vegan sandwich anywhere near this quality. I would eat it everyday.
It’s a shame the entire menu isn’t vegan (change the record FGV, huh?). Matt’s food is so incredibly tasty and inventive, I seriously doubt anyone would miss the cheese included in some of the sandwiches and salads.
Follow Killer Tomato on Twitter for news of the rotating menu and feel free to ask Matt what vegan items he is serving. He told me he adores interacting with customers and answering questions about his food.
Now drool.
Unless something drastic happens such as a Veggie Grill opening in Soho or a Native Foods Cafe popping up on Regent Street, I will probably never again eat vegan food in another central London location other than Koshari Street.
Koshari Street is what vegan London has been lacking. Affordable, quick and incredibly tasty food to eat on the go. Every single person I know who has eaten there cannot sing its praises loudly enough. It is beyond game changing. It is the best vegan food in central London.
Notting Hill Carnival is bursting into action this weekend but I’m not sure I can deal with the sheer number of people that will be swarming the area. Instead, let me give you an insight into some of the vegan finds within this world-famous district by traveling back in time ever so slightly.
A few weeks ago, I made my first ever visit to Portobello Road and I discovered more than a few vegan highlights.
My first treat was a super sweet watermelon juice served cold from a nondescript stall. The fruit chunks were pulverised before my very eyes and the temperature outside was sweltering, hence no photo due to guzzling.
The photos that have survived are included below.
The vegan churros were served piping hot. I know it is an issue but I adore food lifted straight from scalding oil. I dined on scrumptious falafel and was delighted to see the stall promoting the food as 100% vegan. Josh picked up more falafel plus a cold lemonade from Falafel King and he wants me to pass on his recommendation.
If groceries are needed, the compact Portobello Wholefoods is brimming with vegan products including tofu, plant-based meats, bulk grains and snacks. There is also a vegetarian cafe/bakery called The Grain Shop. I didn’t purchase anything, but a quick peek inside revealed a large number of vegan options.
Verdict? Portobello Road Market is a vegan-friendly utopia waiting for you to show up and eat!
